The Drugstore Beauty Edit

I feel like I haven’t done one of these posts in months as my drugstore must-haves generally stay the same and I just keep re-purchasing them! However it still feels a long time coming as I've been planning this post for a while and lately I’ve discovered a few new gems I had to tell you about. Though of course old habits die hard and some of my much-loved staples have crept in! I've stuck to brands you can find in Boots and Superdrug, but I will be doing another post in the new year with less well-known or less-accessible affordable brands I love.

The one and only drugstore primer to ever impress me! It's somehow hydrating yet shine-reducing at once. It sits so nicely on my skin and gives the perfect base for my foundation to apply flawlessly and last throughout the day. You're really not going to get anything close to this for a tenner!

Bourjois Air Mat Foundation | £9.99

Firstly, a bit of a moan about this foundation; it has an awful colour selection. I'm the darkest shade in this (I kid you not!) and swatching some of the others (there are five in total) at least three of them are extremely similar. It's pretty incredible to me that this was developed and seen by so many people before its launch and they all apparently thought this was completely acceptable and reflective of British women. Rant over, if you can find a decent shade the formula is actually pretty good. It does oxidise slightly on the skin and the colours are very warm to begin with so also watch out for that. However it delivers a shine-free but non-drying finish that lasts well throughout the day (as always the '24 Hour' is a bit of a joke though). I wouldn't actually describe it as fully matte, I'd say it's more of a satin finish, so if you have very oily skin it may not be as perfect for you as the name suggests. It gives a very flawless medium coverage without looking heavy on the skin. I probably wouldn't pick it over my high-end stash but if you're looking to spend under a tenner it's a good option.

L'Oreal Infallible Fixing Mist | £7.99

The drugstore finally seems to be catching onto setting sprays and there are a few options now. The first I've tried is from L'Oreal and for under a tenner it really is pretty great. The mist could definitely be finer but whether used on a BeautyBlender to apply my base or spritzed on after I've finished my makeup, this really has helped keep my makeup in place. If pushed though, I think I prefer the Urban Decay if you're happy to make the splurge.

Maybelline Eraser Eye Concealer | £7.99 | post

I'd never really found a drugstore concealer that I couldn't live without until I tried this. Unfortunately it's available in a pitiful two shades, however for me Nude is pretty spot on for a brightening under-eye concealer. I know the applicator turns a lot of people off but it's really not any worse than a doe foot, especially as you're using this under the eyes or for highlighting and not on blemishes. The formula is so light and creamy, it practically blends itself. It's brightening and gives really nice coverage without ever caking. If you have serious dark circles like me then you'll want to use a corrector under it but it's great to have something lighter for minimal makeup days. I'm on about my third tube this year so obviously this is the good stuff!

L'Oreal Lumi Magique Concealer | £8.49

I'd never 'got' the whole Touche Eclat thing until recently but now I couldn't imagine not brightening up my under eyes with a highlighting concealer. I still use a normal concealer but just finish up with a bit of this to mask any darkness. It only comes in two shades compared to YSL and Charlotte Tilbury's vast selections, however if you can get one to work for you then this pretty much does the exact same thing so you might as well save yourself £15-20.

Bourjois Healthy Balance Compact Powder | £8.99 | post

An oldie but a goodie; this is still my favourite face powder, budget or otherwise. It reduces shine whilst being traceless on the skin and not making it look cakey or powdery.

B Sculpted Blush and Highlight Stick | £10.99

B Beauty isn't a brand I hear much about in the blogosphere or one that's really on my radar, however my mum picked this up for me when it was on offer and it definitely looks like a Benefit Fine One One dupe. I have this in the shade Dark and it's been a surprise love for me. I tend to take the deep rosy matte blush and the shimmery white-pink highlight separately but the formula of both is so good. They apply evenly and aren't greasy at all and last really well. It's a little pricier than your standard drugstore cream product but it's well worth the extra.

NYX HD Blush in Amber | £5.50 | post

Maybe a bit of a cheat as this isn't accessible to everyone, however my Boots in Manchester has the most AMAZING NYX department (yes, department, not even just a counter...) and I'm sure they'll be coming to more branches across the country in 2016. The formula is one of the best I've ever tried at this price-point. The powder is so soft and easy to blend. It applies evenly and looks really pretty on the cheeks, as well as lasting without going patchy. My favourite shade has to be Amber, a pretty rose-peachy matte that's perfect for everyday wear.

This has to be one of my favourite lip colours right now. The name is spot on as the formula feels soft and creamy on the lips whilst still having a long-wearing matte finish. It's a gorgeous deep pink nude shade.

Sleek Face Form Kit | £9.99 | post

As NYX's blushes just pipped Sleek's to the post, I thought I'd include an old favourite, which contains three of their lovely cheek products. I'm still bitter that the Medium (unlike the lighter two shades) doesn't contain the lovely Rose Gold blusher but I do love it. The powders are so easy to blend and really pigmented. The contour shade is cool enough to create natural-looking shade without being too grey for my warm skin tone. The highlighter is a gorgeous true, warm gold colour that's perfect for the summer months. The bronzer isn't something I use much as it's just a bit too shimmery and warm for me to know what to do with it, however this is still so worth picking up.

NYX Tame & Frame Tinted Brow Pomade | £5.50 | post

Recently I've been giving my Soap & Glory Brow Archery a rest and have been loving this potted pomade from NYX. I find the formula exactly the same as the famous ABH offering that costs £10 more, though there aren't as many shades to choose from in NYX's range. Expresso works really well for my dark brown/black hair and I apply it with a Zoeva Wing Liner brush for a natural but full brow.

I've actually not blogged about this product before, despite the fact I use it practically every day! I love the pigmented formula and the fact it goes on so smoothly without crumbling everywhere. I use this on my tight line and it works so well to make my lash line look darker and thicker. Best of all it doesn't smudge everywhere, which is amazing given how watery my eyes get.

I know I go on about it all the time but I love this eyeliner. The pigmentation is amazing, it doesn't transfer or smear and the nib is a great size and shape for winged liner (but isn't scratchy at all). For £6 you really can't go wrong.

Collection Eyes Uncovered Palette in Nude | £3.99 | post

The drugstore have really stepped their game up this year and there are now so many proper eyeshadow palettes available at low prices (as opposed to just quads). My favourite has to be the Collection Eyes Uncovered Palette. I recently rediscovered this and was blown away all over again at the texture, pigmentation and overall quality of these six shades for under a fiver! Half of them are shimmers and the other half are matte-look shades with a very slight sheen that are perfect for creating a low-key caramel brown eye look.

Maybelline Colour Tattoo Cream Eyeshadows in Creamy Beige and On & On Bronze | £4.99 each | post

The Maybelline Colour Tattoos are hands down some of the best drugstore beauty products I've ever purchased! I still can't quite believe that these little pots that trump a lot of high-end equivalents are under a fiver. They have a fairly solid texture and apply with incredible pigmentation in just a swipe. They're so creamy and easy to blend out with your finger but once they're set, they're not going to move or crease. I've genuinely tested them in 100 degree heat and for 24 hours and they still stayed in place! My two favourites by far are the bronze-brown shimmer On & On Bronze and the mid-brown matte Creamy Beige. On & On Bronze looks so dewy and multifaceted on the lids and is perfect when you want to look pulled together but only have a few minutes. Creamy Beige is an amazing cream base to make colours applied on top of it really pop and last even longer.

Another one I don't shut up about but this is genuinely my favourite mascara ever. It not only lengthens and curls my lashes, but adds a really nice amount of clump-free volume and is intensely black. It also doesn't flake or smear throughout the day.

Eylure Fleur de Force Fleur Loves Lashes | £5

I've never been much of a false eyelash wearer however these changed all of that! These long, feathery lashes look natural but add a touch of glamour to my makeup look. These are my favourites to wear for a night out.

Essie Nail Polish in In Stitches | £7.99 | post

I've seriously fallen for this deep pink-rose shade as it's the perfect alternative to a nude for winter. I love how pigmented and chip-resistant the formula is too.

Real Techniques Setting Brush | £7.99

actually have two of these: one for concealer and one for setting. The tightly-packed bristles make it perfect for blending in concealer under the eyes for a really natural finish. The shape means it's also amazing for setting powder on top of it.

Real Techniques Blush Brush | £9.99

Another budget multi-tasker that I use pretty much every day. It doesn't look like a blush brush and it probably shouldn't work but it seriously does! I haven't found a blusher yet that this can't apply, and that's saying something for my combination skin that often makes products apply patchily. I apply with the very tip then angle the brush to blend the product out. It also works really well for bronzer. I use this with a matte formula to give subtle definition to my cheekbones.

  3. As much as I love Bourjois, I think they always do a terrible job when it comes to the colour selection, I know that in France, we don't have your lightest shade which means I can't buy any of their complexion releases, which to me it's such a shame because, before knowing it was too dark for me, I try a couple of their foundations and their finishes are always lovely! I really want to try the L'oréal Infallible fixing mist!

  5. This is such a good post, I'm going to save it! I actually love drugstore products, especially how far they've come in the past few years. The sleek highlight in the three form palettes are so good right?! Actually all the products you've mentioned have definitely been a favourite of mine at one point or another. X

  7. Such beautiful photography as always, the pictures alone are enough to make me want to run & purchase everything! All lovely products, I'm a really big fan of Bourjois & their products so it's slightly disappointing to hear about the lack of shades and good things about that foundation! Although I am very much in love with the powder you mentioned, it's the best powder I've ever tried! Real Techniques brushes are always amazing & I'm dying to try a pair of Fleur's lashes, these ones look super pretty!

  13. That's really unfortunate that Bourjois doesn't have a wide shade selection- enjoyed the rant lol. I had no idea that L'Oreal had a setting spray; I've been using my L'Oreal foundation more and more these days and it would be nice to see how they work with each other! (Although I do prefer a finer mist)

    Great shares! xx

  18. Some great products here! I love the formula of the Maybelline concealer, but the colour selection really lets it down. I'm going to try to get hold of the brightening version that the US have & see if that's any better for me. I'd really like to try the NYX brow pomade, I haven't tried the Anastasia because I'm very fussy about shades of brow products so want to be able to swatch before buying. Hopefully one of my local Boots stores will have NYX in soon. Xx

  28. I love the Maybelline Colour Tattoo cream shadows; I have this product in four shades now, but think they're more workable in lighter shades. That's the second time today I've read about the poor range of shades in the Bourjois Air Mat foundation! I'm pale, but have yellow undertones, which a lot of drugstore brands don't cater for (we don't all have pink undertones, you know!), so I'd probably have no luck with that xx
