Soap & Glory One Heck of a Blot Primer, Foundation & Powder | Review

Soap & Glory recently added both a primer and a foundation to their range that go with their super-popular One Heck of a Blot Powder (which I'd never tried). I'd never tried the powder so decided to pick up the range in the Boots 3 for 2 offer. Now I've given them a go on my shine-prone skin for a couple of weeks, I thought I'd share my thoughts.

I've honestly never been blown away by a drugstore primer, so I approached this with trepidation. However I have to say this has been my favourite so far! It has a cream-like formula and doesn't do the annoying 'balling up' thing as long as you leave some time after moisturising and just lightly wipe it on. My base goes on really nicely when I use this and it helps keep my face shine-free all day long.

I tried this in several different ways: with the powder and foundation, with no powder and the foundation, with my Nars foundation and so on, and it held up every time! On its own with a different foundation and no powder there was a slight dewiness to my skin but nothing too shiny. I think my preference is this, followed by Nars Sheer Glow with a bit of the powder to set everything.

I also think it's definitely increased the wear-time of my makeup, especially in the areas that seem to drink up my base. The only slight negative to this is that I don't feel it smooths out my pores and stops foundation setting into fine lines as much as it could've. But hey, you can't have it all and for £10 this is well worth picking up.

When I saw this was only released in a measly 4 shades (I hope S&G HQ are working on that...), I held little hope in getting a match as the drugstore has rarely served me well. However surprisingly Caramel is a pretty decent match. If I'm going to nit-pick I'd have liked it a tad lighter and more warm in tone, but overall it's more than acceptable.

It comes out as a slightly thick liquid foundation however it dries into a powder very quickly so there's definitely a knack to applying it! I tend to only apply the smallest amount to a tiny area at a time, as it dries very quickly and once it does it ain't moving so it's essential to apply this perfectly straightaway. If you don't, be prepared for major patchiness. I find it works well enough applied with brushes but I looked awful and patchy with a damp BeautyBlender. I don't think I've ever said this before but it works best by far when applied with the fingertips; it looks even and natural.

What I do like about this is that the finish isn't too dry; I don't feel like it clings to and emphasises imperfections, nor is it too matte. However if you have dry patches, I'm not sure I'd recommend it. I'd imagine it's fairly similar to the Nars All Day Luminous Weightless foundation. It doesn't feel heavy or suffocating on the skin and it doesn't look to flat. The wear-time is also impressive and it keeps my shine at bay easily (even without powder). The coverage is hard to describe as it looks fairly natural on the skin in that it doesn't mask your natural complexion, but it still feels full in that it evens out the skin tone and looks pretty flawless.

Overall I do like this but the patchiness is really hard to avoid, if you have any dryness at all then this is unlikely to be for you. People with very oily skin will likely love it. For those of you with combination skin like mine, there are pros and cons. Is it a must-have? No. Might you want to try it anyway? Quite possibly.

The main reason I never picked this up is that I find 'translucent' powders often leave a white-cast on my skin. However I actually haven't found it with this. It's very finely-milled so I just take a little on a fan brush and apply it to the places I get oily (under the eyes and my t-zone, really). It doesn't leave a residue on my skin and is completely undetectable! I wouldn't know I was wearing it if it wasn't for the fact I no longer require a powder touch-up during the day (previously unheard of).

I do think though, for deeper skin tones than mine, you may have a problem with the whiteness of the powder being visible. I tend not to use this with the primer and foundation with this too as it can be a bit much and honestly only one of the three is necessary to keep my t-zone at bay.

All in all there are two loves and a cautious like in there!

Have you tried any of the One Heck of a Blot products?

  1. Ahh you've made me so torn as to whether or not I try the foundation. It sounds lovely but I can't deal with patchy foundations!

  2. I don't think this foundation would be for me as I'm quite dry but do like the sound of the powder... Soap & Glory definitely have some gems!

  3. I also recently picked up the primer and foundation and I totally agree with you, primer is lovely at keeping oils at bay but not so much at smoothing skin out. Foundation looks the best when applied with fingers and unfortunately does cling to any dry patches, not loving it :( x

  4. I've heard mixed reviews on this foundation - annoying there's only 4 shades as well, glad you could find a semi-decent match! Very interested in trying the primer now though :)

  5. I really want to try all of these, right now! I think I'll like that primer a lot; I might have to check if the foundation has a good colour match on me, but I don't get my hopes up too much ;) Do you think this one would work well combined with the Nars Luminous Weightless foundation? I bought that one in summer and can only wear it for a few weeks or it's just too dark. I really want to start mixing it in with a much paler foundation so it creates the perfect match but I'm not too keen on mixing different formulas... Let me know if you have gotten any wiser on that! ;)

  6. I'm a big soap and glory fan, I've used their eyeliners for years so I'm quite keen to try out their other make up products :) I have yet to find a primer that blows me away for a decent price so this is definitely next on my list, thank you for a great, honest review!

  9. I'm using the Body Shop's Tea Tree Primer at the moment which I really like, but as this one is easier to get hold of for me and seems to do the same job I reckon I'll try Soap and Glory's next! Interesting to hear your thoughts on the products used together and separately, great review Jasmine :)

  10. Ahh, I love that powder and I'm so excited they've expanded the range. I've heard the same reviews elsewhere - apparently the primer is really impressive and the foundation is a bit average. I'm going to have to try and find a way to get my hands on that primer for sure!

  11. I'm in two minds as to whether to try the foundation, as I have the powder and find it has a tendency to look very cakey on my skin! I think I need to try applying with a lighter hand, I've been using a powder brush but I might try a fan brush instead - thanks for the tip!

  16. I'm very curious about the foundation (I'm a bit of a base product hoarder) but it just doesn't sound right for my dry/acne-prone skin... and they probably don't have one pale enough for me anyway. But the primer and powder sound great, I'll have to try them out when they're on offer x

  17. Still haven't tried Soap & Glory makeup (bad blogger), not so sure about this range though as my skin can get so dehydrated so not sure it would work too well for my needs. The primer doesn't sound too bad though so I might look into that x

  19. I've not heard very good things about this foundation - seems like it's only really looks good if you really figure it out and take time over it, which seems a bit pointless when there are so many other drugstore foundations that are so easy and effective! I kinda hate their foundation shades too, I used the Show Good Face one a while ago and even though I quite liked the formulation, it was way too pink and came in a really narrow colour range.
I'm totally liking the sound of the primer though, I might well pick that one up for a try.

I'm also after a new primer and after hearing such amazing things about this one I think I'll have to give it a try. The foundation seems a bit hit and miss, the lack of shades is definitely a deterrent for me, I already have such a struggle finding the right shade. x

  24. I looove how One Heck of A Blot sounds like, the name is so catchy and I always want to try the products ever since I saw it on Essie Button and Lily Pebbles videos! However I never tried any S&G products and it's unbelievably expensive in my country, I know the price is comparable to Rimmel in UK, but once it got here S&G is way up there along with the high end products prices. It's ridiculous.

  26. I've heard so many mixed reviews on the foundation but I'm totally with you, oily girls will like it, dry skinned girls not so much! Surprised at the tiny shade range though! The primer feels lovely to apply but I find I still get oily especially round my nose throughout the day and the powder is one long term faves :) great review, I have one on the three products planned but God knows when it will be written up!

  31. I swatched the primer yesterday in Boots and I loved how it felt then but I wanted to read reviews first before I bought it so I'm glad you've done this post with all 3! I did look at the foundation but was shocked at the lack of shades, and like you I sometimes find it difficult to match a drugstore foundation shade. I'll definitely be trying the primer and powder though!

I don't really like cream-powder or liquid-powder formulas because they do tent to be patchy and uneven! It's great that the primer did a good job at keeping oil at bay though, I don't typically have this problem however I'm happy to recommend a drugstore alternative to those who ask!

  42. I've been using the foundation for the past 6 months - i have crazy oily skin with random dry areas, and i find that this stays on the best! It took me SOOOO long to find a foundation that really stuck to my skin, because many would separate by mid-day and would frustrate me to no end!
I DO feel you, though, when it comes to it drying too quickly. I was looking into trying the One Heck of a Blot Primer - but it doesn't seem like it remedies the streakiness. I have found that the PERFECT primer pairing for this Foundation, is Benefit's Pore-Fessional. It obviously does its job at minimizing pores, but I believe it offers just the right amount of moisture, as a base, so this foundation can blend successfully. I love the finish a beauty blender offers, so its really important for me to have the primer with it, otherwise the results are NOT the same.
I highly suggest trying the two together!
