Underrated Beauty Products

This post seems to have been lurking on my list of ideas for ages and I've been jotting down products to feature in it as they've cropped into my head over the past few months. Today I'm finally sharing with you my finished list! Just a little disclaimer: I'm not saying these brands in themselves are necessarily all underrated - sometimes it's just the product or shade I'm talking about. I really hope this is helpful and that you discover some new products you could end up loving as much as I do.

Mandara Spa Body Butter in Coconut and Ylang Ylang* | £6 | review | Sadly I've run out of this, which is why it isn't pictured but I'll be repurchasing it as soon as I've made my way through a few other body butters I already have. Firstly, it's a total bargain! However, that aside, it's just a really great product in itself. It has a beautiful, nourishing but very lightweight and non-greasy texture. The fragrance is light and fruity-floral - not overwhelming but enough to add a nice scent to the skin. I'd go so far as to say that these body butters are my favourites but no one seems to talk about them!

Vivderma Comforting Gellee Cleanser* | £32 | review | Before a PR contact asked if I'd like to try this product, I'd honestly never come across this skincare brand before. When you don't know much about a product you go into it without an agenda - there's no hype it needs to live up to but equally it could be completely forgettable. This turned out to be one of my favourite cleansers! It has this amazing honey-like texture (which is also how it smells - making it even more luxurious to use) which feels incredible on the skin. It removes makeup so effectively without stinging my eyes. It's also really nice and nourishing but doesn't leave excess grease on my skin after I rinse it off. I still don't hear many people raving about this product but I completely recommend giving it a go.

Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser | £18 | review | The Glow Tonic from Pixi must be one of the most hyped-up products in the beauty world, however I really think it's sister also deserves some buzz! I do think the packaging is a bit rubbish because the letters rubbed off within about 6 uses... However, inside it's fantastic. The texture is hard to describe; it almost has a gel-mud formula. I really like how it feels on the skin and on contact with water it emulsifies so it's a great one if you're in a rush in the morning. It gives my skin a nice boost of radiance, which is always welcome on those mornings when I wake up and things are looking a little bit lacklustre. It's become a staple on my skincare shelf.

Hylamide Matte 12 Primer* | £23 | review | Ok, this was definitely a summer product for me, but it will still be amazing on oily skin all year round. It's almost a gel-cream texture that glides so smoothly onto the skin. I often find mattifying primers too dry (so you're dragging it across the skin!) or very silicone-y (which leaves my skin feeling slippery). This isn't like that at all, which is why I think it will work for you if you get a bit shiny in the warmer months, no matter your skin type. It doesn't 'ball up' and provides the perfect base for my foundation. It improves the appearance of pores and fine lines and is amazing at keeping my face shine-free and making sure my makeup doesn't melt off my skin in the sun.

Cover FX Mattifying BB Gel* | £35 | review | When I go on holiday, there's only one base I trust in the sun during the day and this is it! Firstly, it comes in a really wide range of shades with different undertones, especially for a lightweight base (which are traditionally quite limited in colours). The shade G Medium-Deep is absolutely spot on for my skin tone. It feels so lightweight on my skin but actually gives decent coverage, evening out any redness and going a good way towards hiding blemishes and dark circles. It gives a flawless, matte finish that doesn't look or feel drying. However for me, what makes this product a total game-changer is the staying power! It's the only thing I can trust to stay in place and keep things fairly shine-free when it's 100 degrees. I also often get breakouts in hot, sunny weather and this really helps keep them at bay. Overall it's a must if you have oily or combination skin.

Sleek Blush by 3 Palette in Lace | £9.99 | I recently rediscovered this old favourite and definitely think it needs some more love in the blogging community. I'd say Sleek blushers do get credit in general, but I don't hear as many people talk about the palettes. This looks a little intimidating in the pan and they are very pigmented but you can get a natural look using a light hand. The texture is very nice and easy to blend, as well as lasting well on my skin. The colours are just stunning though - there are two mattes, a vivid orange and almost neon pink, and one shimmer - a peachy-pink with a subtle gold sheen running through it (basically a perfect Nars Orgasm dupe).

KIKO Velvet Touch Creamy Stick Blushes | £7.90 each | review | These seem to be reduced and only limited shades are available on the website so I'm praying they aren't being discontinued! As someone with combination skin, I really struggle with cream blushers (to the point that I just thought they weren't for me). However this is the most amazing formula, looking natural and healthy on the skin without too much dewiness. These don't make my face look shiny, they don't go patchy and they don't wear off after a few hours. I have the shades 02 Golden Peach (as the name suggests - it's a perfect 'no makeup' blusher colour) and 06 Geranium (an interesting matte berry-rose colour). I don't know how these don't get more love because they're the best cream blushers I've ever tried.

Lorac Unzipped Eyeshadow Palette | $42 | review and UK shipping details | Everyone and their mother seems to have and love the Lorac Pro Palette but the shades just didn't stand out to me so I opted instead for the less-talked-about Unzipped. The colours speak for themselves; it's just the most stunning selection of copper and bronze shades with a couple of reds, golds and browns thrown in. The formulation is absolutely incredible; the shimmers are almost like a foiled shadow because they have this intensely pigmented, dewy, metallic finish. The mattes have amazing colour payoff too and blend out beautifully. These look amazing on the lids and stay looking fresh throughout the day. Overall I think this is my all-time favourite eyeshadow palette both in terms of quality and the stunning warm shade selection.

Too Faced Natural Eyes Palette | £32 | review | Again, a brand which has eyeshadow palettes that everyone talks about but the one I love always seems to get overlooked! Ok, I appreciate it isn't as exciting-looking in the pan as say the Sweet Peach or Chocolate Bar, however you can see how much I've used this because it's one of those 'every single day' palettes. If you have a friend or relative that isn't really into makeup but just wants eyeshadows that will work for them, whether it's on a workday or for a night out, then this is a great option. The eyeshadows are smooth, pigmented, long-wearing and (most importantly) easy to use. You can just as easily use this to create a nude smoky eye or something matte and daytime-appropriate. It's just a great all-rounder!

LA Splash Art Ki Tekt Slim Waterproof Eyeliner* | £11.25 | This is admittedly a pretty recent discovery but I can't believe I haven't heard more about it! It's so pigmented and gives this amazing solid, matte black line. The brush tip is so precise and the formula doesn't smudge or transfer during the day.

L'Oreal False Lash Flutter Mascara | £10.99 | This is perhaps only second to the much-hyped Maybelline Lash Sensational as my all-time favourite mascara (drugstore or otherwise). It has a really interesting wand that pretty much combs out your lashes whilst coating them with product. It's an amazing lengthening and curling mascara that's perfect for everyday wear if you want a product that's really going to open up your eyes. I love that it also never smudges or flakes.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Double Dare | £16 | For me, Lolita is nice but Double Dare is stunning! The formula is a tiny bit drying but nothing that would stop me wearing it unless my lips were especially dry and sore. It is long-wearing and has a nice, opaque consistency, however for me it's all about the colour. This is a gorgeous strawberry-nude that's perfect for when you want something a little bolder than a nude that's still quite muted.

MAC Matte Lipstick in Taupe | £15.50 | Again, a product that gets overlooked because it has a more famous sibling! Personally I way prefer this warmer, deeper brown nude to Velvet Teddy. It has a really nice creamy and comfortable formula too despite the true matte finish. For lighter skin tones it's a bold 90s brown lip but on Medium-Dark skin it's like the perfect 'your lips but better'.

What are your favourite products that deserve more hype?

  1. I love Too Faced Natural eyes palette, in fact, it's the only palette I own and kind of my 'first proper palette'. I agree though, it's quiet underrated even if, like you said, it's so wearable. My personal opinion but I'd rather buy 'boring palette' like this since I can get many uses of it.

  3. I love the L'Oreal False Lash Flutter mascara - I never thought I would because I don't like gimmicky brushes but this one just works so well.
I swatched a couple of Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks when I was in Sephora and I really wasn't blown away by Lolita or Lolita II so I went for Double Dare. I think it's so much nicer and like you said, bold without being too in your face.

  6. Lovely picks! Mac Taupe is stunning, yet I feel like it is getting more and more famous as it's been a couple of months now that I'm trying to purchase it and it is always out of stock!

  9. feel like a majority of the smaller Too Faced palettes tend to get lost in the hype of the chocolate bar or sweet peach palettes. Mac Taupe was one of my go-to lipsticks until I lost it one day...actual tears were produced it wasn't pretty and since then I've just forgotten to purchase another one since.

  10. I've never been the biggest fan of Velvet Teddy, I don't know why I just hated it when I tried it on. Taupe looks really nice though! That Lorac palette is just dreamy. I agree that the Too Faced palette is totally underrated, I'd pick my matte natural eyes palette over the chocolate bar any day! I love how easy to work with their matte shades in particular are.

  17. I completely agree with you on so many of these. The PIXI cleanser really only needs a sticker label to avoid the grossness that happens on the outside because inside it really is incredible. I don't have Velvet Teddy because you're right...Taupe is far superior especially for medium skintones. The Kiko cream stick blushers though...love mine so much! xxx

  18. I couldn't find a cream formula that works on my oily/combination skin, those Kiko blush sticks sound good! Also can you say LA Splash eyeliner is better than Stila one or Stila one is still leading? :) Double dare looks stunning! x

  22. I love the sleek palettes. I agree Taupe is so under-rated! I need to check out the LA splash liner. Kiko just opened a store in my local town so I will definitely be picking up one those blushes. I still haven't tried any Too Faced shadows, but i may treat myself ;) xx

  28. Taupe by MAC looks like a shade I'd like a lot! It is so warm and gorgeous :) Also, the Hylamide Matte primer sounds like a product I could indeed use all year round, my oily skin leaving me no rest no matter if it's summer or winter! I don't wear primers at all, but they day I feel like investing in a good one I'll have the link to the Hylamide Matte in my favourites, thank you :D

The product is definitely amazing! Sleek Lace is so bright to look at but transfers beautifully on the skin. I need to pull out mine. Great post Jasmine.
