Summer Skincare Updates

Summer is well and truly here so I thought I'd take the opportunity to share with you the products I've been loving this season. I do have combination skin but it can get quite spotty and shiny in the sun and heat, so I tend to alter my skincare routine to take care of that.

Yes To Detoxifying Charcoal Mud Mask* | £7.99 | I know I've done a review of this previously but I just wanted to give it another mention here! This is a really great cleansing charcoal mask that leaves my face feeling clean, less greasy and overall more balanced. I find my skin is a lot clearer when I use this and my large pores look a little bit better. When I use this my skin looks and feels so fresh; after a day in the sun there's nothing better!

Yes To Tomatoes Detoxifying Charcoal Cleanser* | £11.99 | If you've been reading my blog for a good while, you'll know what a fan I was of the original cleansing gel that was part of the Yes To Tomatoes range for combination/blemish-prone skin. This version contains charcoal, which really draws out impurities in the skin. Although it contains the effective-but-intense salicylic acid, it seems to be in a relatively small amount because I'm able to use this gel-based cleanser daily without my skin feeling stripped. It's slightly foaming and exfoliating but leaves my skin feeling clean without being sapped of moisture. This is a really great 'maintenance' product; it isn't going to get rid of a major breakout by the next morning if you use it once, however it really helps keep my skin clear. When I can feel a breakout coming on or can see a few little red spots appearing in a cluster, I switch to this and it keeps them at bay.

The Body Shop Seaweed Oil-Balancing Toner | £7 | Ok, so a toner won't transform your skin all on its own, however after a day in the heat I find this amazing. It's so refreshing and doesn't strip my skin but removes any excess oiliness.

La Roche-Posay Serozinc Spray Mini* | £4.50 | I'm a long-time fan of Serozinc and always use it during the Summer. The mini size is so handy for travelling or even just throwing in your back to top-up during the day (the mist itself is very fine and lightweight so won't ruin your makeup). I use this in place of a toner in the morning when I just want something quick and easy. It leaves my skin a little more matte and calms any angry active breakouts. Over time I do feel that this reduces my blemishes as well as giving me that instant relief.

Cloud 9 Clarity Skin Spot-Clearing Gel* | £32 | This is a little more of an investment but it's been such a life-saver for me this Summer that when I eventually run out, I will be buying a replacement. I love the gel texture because it dries down so it feels like nothing on the skin; it isn't sticky or thick or unpleasant in any way. I personally use it before moisturising because it absorbs so quickly that it's no extra effort at all. It has a really nice calming feel on my spots and when I add this into my routine following a breakout, my skin clears up within the next day or so. It's even good to use just as a 'general maintenance' product because it isn't at all harsh or drying (I'd even say it feels quite moisturising).

Avene Cleanance Expert* | £15 | I reserve this one for when my skin has gone into meltdown and personally like to use it before bed, however you can also swap your usual day cream for it. It has a cream consistency and does feel slightly astringent on the skin but nothing too intense! It dries to a matte/satin finish, so you can wear this under makeup. It really does clear up my skin pretty much overnight and I also feel like it helps with those niggling blackheads.

Caudalie Vinosource Moisturising Matifying Fluid* | £23 | It's no secret that I've been obsessed with the Moisturising Sorbet by Caudalie so I was thrilled to be sent the matte version to try. I think that for Summer I actually love this even more! It's still so moisturising (it contains that magic Grape Water of Caudalie's that I really love) but sets down to a more matte finish. I love how non-drying it is and how it still has a light gel-cream texture that applies beautifully (some matte moisturisers are so dry it's like you're dragging the product across your skin!) It keeps the dehydration and the shine at bay so is a must-have for combination skin.

Skyn Iceland Pure Pore Minimiser* | £25 | I was a long-time Porefessional fan (I'd use a normal primer all over my face, then the Benefit Porefessional on the areas I needed it) however recently it just hadn't been doing it for me and my pores looked as distracting as ever! In stepped Skyn Iceland. In Summer I feel like my pores are so visible and I was really getting fed up; maybe other people didn't see it but I did! This is a cream formula that comes in a handy pump packaging and you only need the tiniest amount (applied before or after your face primer - I don't find it makes a difference). It genuinely makes my pores look much less obvious and stops my makeup settling into them and making the situation worse.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Ultra-Light Fluid SPF50 | £16.50 | This has been my go-to face sunscreen for the past year (though I've received a few new products to try out that I'll be taking to Italy with me!) This really was a game-changer for me; high-protection SPF that wasn't thick, white or gloopy. This can be worn under makeup without making your base look 'off' and has a slight tint so doesn't give that white-cast. I also love how lightweight it is!

Hylamide Matte 12* | £23 | I don't want to say this has overtaken the Soap & Glory One Heck of a Blot but I think it's well on the way... It has a sort of cream-gel formula that doesn't have any nasty silicone slip. It doesn't feel dry or powdery on my skin at all but allows my base to apply really nicely (with no 'peeling' effect). I think this is better than One Heck of a Blot at keeping my oiliness at bay, which is what I really want for the hotter months. I find my makeup stays looking fresher for longer and doesn't vanish from the usual problem areas (under the eyes and around my nose!)

Hand Chemistry Hyaluronic Body Mist* | £17 | This has been a total revelation for me! If only I'd discovered it earlier this Summer... In the morning I'm all about quick and easy products; basically if it doesn't have a pump or something then I won't be bothering! This is an amazing water-light spray for the body that leaves my skin feeling so fresh, plump, soft and hydrated. It only takes a few seconds to apply and you don't even really need to work it in. I can imagine this will also feel great on my skin after a day in the sun!

Barry M Coco Loco Lip Oil | £4.99 | I've been such a huge fan of my tinted Clarins lip oil this Summer, so fancied trying a completely clear option and also seeing if a cheaper product could live up to it. I do prefer the Clarins but given the price difference I'd definitely recommend checking this out! It's really nourishing on the lips and I haven't experienced any chapping or dry patches since using it. I just apply it when I'm doing my skincare routine, give it some time to sink in then wipe away the excess before applying my lip colour.

  2. Yes to is definitely one of my favourite low end ranges. I'm still looking for a toner that does something amazing, all of the ones I've tried have been pretty 'meh'.

    1. I think that unless it's an acid - a toner is never going to be a total game changer xx

  3. I bought the Clinique Take the Day off Balm last week and I have really been enjoying it! I really need to find a good moisturiser for in the morning, so that is my aim for the next few weeks! Skincare is so much harder to find "the one" than makeup!
