The Liquid Lipstick Edit

As you may or may not have noticed, I’m more than a little bit obsessed with liquid lipsticks right now. I mean, what’s there not to love? They’re pigmented, non-messy, long-lasting and give you a gorgeous matte finish. This is a breakdown of the different formulas I’ve tried so far and my favourite shades within them. I'll warn you that I do tend to go for deep pink, mauve and nude shades as that's what suits me and what I find wearable on a day-to-day basis. Unfortunately due to the fact so many of these brands are only available online, I've ended up with some quite similar shades too but hopefully the swatches will help you avoid doing the same thing!

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Lipstick | £8.99 each

I have to kick it off with the product that started the obsession! I do still really like these, though I have to admit I’ve ended up in possession of several very similar shades… They’re really creamy and non-drying in formula whilst still looking matte. They don’t fade for hours and even when they do it’s not uneven. I would say that the applicator isn’t the best as it picks up a lot of product; definitely scrape a bit off on the sides before applying this.

I have the shades Beau Brun, Happy Nude Year and Nude-ist. You definitely don’t need all three as they’re similar enough. Beau Brun is more of a brown-toned nude as the name would suggest, Happy Nude Year is more of a pink and Nude-ist is that perfect balance between the two. That gorgeous ‘my lips but better’ pinky-brown nude colour makes Nude-ist my favourite.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams | £5.50 each

This is one of the most affordable options in this post yet it’s one of the best! I think this was the formula that really cemented my love for liquid lipsticks. It has everything you want from a liquid lipstick: a matte finish, longevity and pigmentation whilst being incredibly creamy in formula (making it so easy to apply) and the most comfortable of the bunch to wear. These don’t emphasise any dryness on your lips and as the name suggests, actually leaves them feeling nice and soft. I actually think they’re extremely similar to the ones Collection Cosmetics do, which are very slightly cheaper however those only come in three shades whereas NYX’s has well over a dozen colours.

I have the shades San Paulo, Ibiza, Zurich, Morocco and Cannes. Don’t be fooled by the packaging as San Paulo is actually a fairly bold cool-toned pink. Ibiza is reasonably similar but it’s lighter, more of a nude and less cool in tone. Zurich is a peachy-pink nude that actually suits me and although it’s already a favourite, I can see this being one of my most-worn spring shades. Morocco was a bit of an experimental purchase for me as it’s a fairly bold orange-red. Finally it’s my absolute favourite Cannes, which is a dusky pink nude colour.

The Balm Meet Matt(e) Hughes Long-Lasting Liquid Lipstick | £13.50 each

This is a nice mid-range option that has a more traditional liquid lipstick formula. Instead of being creamy it’s very fluid, but still super-pigmented. It’s slightly more drying as a result but I’d say it’s even more long-lasting at the same time One day I genuinely wore one of these for 6 hours and it was still intact! I was eating, drinking and not really paying attention to the fact I was wearing lipstick but I popped to the loos and was amazed to see the colour was still in place. The range is geared more towards deep, berry and red tones but there are a few brights and nudes in there too.

I have Committed, a dusky pink nude (NYX Cannes is definitely a dupe for this) and Charming, a deeper mauve-berry shade. Both are gorgeous but I probably get more use out of Charming because it’s really daytime-appropriate.

Dose of Colors Matte Lipsticks | £14.50 each

When these first landed in the UK via BeautyBay they were constantly sold out but I managed to snap up a couple of shades. They’re again a mid-range option and I just love the packaging of these. Again the formula is very fluid and the wand is shaped to make it easy to apply. It isn’t drying and I think these are up there with the Balm's in terms of longevity.

I have two shades in this: Stone and Truffle. I initially picked up Stone because it was the only neutral I could find in stock, however I think I’m going to put it in a blog sale or something as it doesn’t really suit me! It’s just a bit too cool in tone, though the grey-ish mauve colour might suit others it just washes me out. Truffle is much better for me, as it's a warm caramel-brown nude. It's a great everyday shade and I'm really pleased to have it in my stash.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks | $20 each

These are some of the most talked-about lip products in the blogosphere so during January I could resist the temptation no more and ordered a couple from Sephora. After all the hype, my expectations were high! They come in a great selection of shades from bright to nude to deep. I’ve heard some people say they find them drying, though they aren’t as comfortable as the NYX or Sephora options I do still find these fairly creamy and they don’t emphasise dry lips.

I have the famous Lolita, a mauve-brown deep nude and Double Dare, a pinky nude with a hint of caramel brown. I know everyone goes on about Lolita (and I do really like it) but Double Dare is the shade I’ve been obsessed with; I genuinely wore it everyday for about a week which is unheard of for me.

LA Spash Lip Couture Waterproof Liquid Lipstick | £11.25

This has a gloss-like formula when first applied - I actually had to check the packaging that I hadn't accidentally ordered the wrong product. However it dries down in a few seconds to a non-drying matte finish (it's sort of velvety to the touch). It isn't my favourite formula as it is quite messy to apply and can be prone to flaking off and you can't really layer it up evenly.

The shade I have is Latte Confession, a gorgeous blush pink with hints of mauve and brown. 

Sephora Cream Lip Stains | $14 each

Back to a more creamy and comfortable formula; it’s one of my favourite options from Sephora. Unfortunately they aren’t available in the UK but if you’re planning a Sephora order (read about the shipping here) then definitely pick one up. They’re pretty similar in formula to the NYX ones in that they’re non-drying but still look matte and will last you up to 4 hours before you need to re-apply. The range is mostly deep and bright shades and I definitely want to get my hands on a few more.

I have 13 Marvellous Mauve in this formula which is just a gorgeous everyday mauve colour. You know I love those!

ColourPop Ultra Matte Lips | $6

I've heard mixed things about ColourPop's liquid lipstick formula but I was doing an order anyway so at $6 each, I decided to pop one into my basket. I can see the pros and the cons of this product as it is a tad drying, however the wear-time is incredible. Find out the UK shipping information here.

I have this in Lumiere 2, which is a vibrant deep mauve colour. It's on the 'safe' side of a colour - think MAC Up the Amp.

Gerard Cosmetics Hydra Matte Liquid Lipstick | £9.50

Although I wouldn't say this was as super-hydrating as the name might suggest; it isn't too drying on my lips. The formula lasts a good 6 hours, even when eating and drinking, which is pretty impressive!

I have the shade Cher, which is a deep mauve with a hint of brown that's slightly cool in tone. It's one of those great day-to-evening shades and I definitely have my eye on Serenity next.

Next on my wish list are MAC's, Stila's, NYX's Lip Lingerie range and Anastasia's!
