Beauty Chat with Mum

It's Mother's Day (or Mothering Sunday, if we're going to be correct!) so I sat down with my mum for a chat about beauty. I hope you enjoy.

What are your go-to lip products?

You've accused me of having 40 lipsticks in the same colour! My go-to is always a warm peachy pink with a bit of a sheen like the L'Oreal Colour Riche Lipstick in Naomi's Nude (Limited Edition) or the MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Pure Zen (£15.50). When I go out I like to finish it with a gloss like the MAC Lipglass in Stoke the Flame (Limited Edition). I also find the MAC Lip Pencil in Spice (£12.50) blends in with the kind of shades I like to wear. I always like to line my lips to emphasises them and give some definition. I love Spice too - it's a gorgeous warm brown nude that works with so many looks!

Which high-end products were worth the splurge?

I think the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation (£29.50) lives up to all the hype because it gives a really full coverage without looking heavy. It's my favourite foundation for winter (I tend to go for a tinted moisturiser in the summer like Clinique's Moisture Surge). It covers any blemishes or imperfections and the shade range is very good. I just seem to get through it very quickly! I'm a big fan of this also - though I'm still on my first bottle whilst Mum is on about her third... I also love the range of colours in the Stila Eyes Are the Window Palette in Soul (£30). They can be adapted for a daytime look (when I use the mattes) or nighttime look (when I use the shimmers). This is one of my favourites too for a bronzed smoky eye - read my review here. In terms of giving a false lash effect I think the Lancome Grandiose Mascara (£25) is the best. It really extends and lengthens my eyelashes. Ok, I need to try this mascara now too...

What are your top budget buys?

I've always suffered with dry hair but I find the Frizz Ease Secret Agent Touch-Up Creme (£5.99) gives immediate condition and shine, removing any frizz. I ruined my eyelashes by having professional false lashes applied every week so I've reverted to stick-on lashes. I get through quite a lot of them so I go for the Star Eyes Lashes (£3.90) which I get from Home Bargains (for less than the online price). They're a very natural false eyelash so you can easily wear them in the day.

I don't tend to spend a lot on skincare so I use the Nivea Double Effect Eye Makeup Remover (£3.89). I find it so effective and gentle at removing all my eye makeup.  Another favourite is thKIKO Power Pro Nail Lacquer in 27 Nude (£4.90); the colour is very natural, foolproof to apply and it lasts very well. I also like the Barry M Nail Paint in Cappuccino (£2.99) as again it's very easy to apply. The dark chocolatey-grey colour is suitable for day or night and you only need one coat. The Sleek Blush By 3 Palette in Californ.IA (£9.99) is my go-to palette as it's very easy to apply and blend. The shades go well with my usual lip colours and I like to use the centre shade as a highlighter. They also last very well on my skin.

Which products do you think are seriously underrated?

I think The Balm TimeBalm Concealer (£14.75) is so effective at covering both dark circles and blemishes but the texture isn't too heavy. I also really like the Bare Minerals Warmth All Over Face Colour (£20) applied with Real Techniques Retractable Bronzer Brush (£13.99). I bought this bronzer from Feel Unique because it had rave reviews. You only need a tiny amount, so whilst it looks really dark, it actually produces a very natural, suntanned look.

What are your favourite bath and body products?

I've tried every body lotion ever invented and I have very try skin. By far the best product to treat and moisturise it is the Nivea Rich Nourishing Body Moisturiser (£4.99). It has a lovely smell and despite being very rich, sinks in easily and the effects are long-lasting. I also really like the Philosophy Fresh Cream Shower Gel (£19.50). I love their shower gels; they're always worth picking up. I've had them in various different scents but this goes with my chosen daytime fragrance. I like using this both as a shower gel and in my bath. I also have the body cream and lotion! I may or may not have stolen this a couple of times...I find it gives such amazing bubbles if you pop a bit in your bath.

What are your signature scents?

I really like to layer scents with my body products and my fragrances so I also have the Philosophy Fresh Cream Eau de Toilette (£34). It's my favourite daytime fragrance. It has hints of vanilla and is sweet without being sickly. I also like Viktor and Rolf Flower Bomb Extreme Eau de Parfum (£80), which is my go-to evening fragrance. I only tried it for the first time a couple of years ago when my boyfriend got it for me, but I've grown to love it. It's a unique deep floral scent. I recently tried the shower gel too and it's gorgeous!

What other product can't you live without?

Generally I sleep well but I've built up a good routine around sleeping over the years. Part of that is to use a pillow spray. I find the This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray (£16) the most relaxing. It both helps me initially get off to sleep as part of my relaxing routine and to stay asleep. I think mum and me are the same in that a good night's sleep is all about having a nice, relaxing routine. I use this every night too.

How would you describe your everyday makeup look?

The peachy pink sheeny lip! And I like similar shades for my cheeks; I always use a cream blusher due to my dry skin as it seems to absorb and last better. I have also fed back to Jasmine that she needs to make it clear in her posts if a blusher is cream or powder! I go for a bronzed look on my skin and on my eyes a bronzy-brown colour. In my ideal world I like quite a dewy finish foundation but in the winter I tend to go for something less hydrating.

What beauty advice would you give to your younger self?

Do not over-use false eyelashes with strong glue! Also don't necessarily follow the trends - go for what suits you. I used to wear a lot of blues and greens that didn't suit me. However I still think it's good to be more willing to experiment on a night out; it's nice to look different from the day to the night, especially on the eyes.

How has your approach to beauty changed over the years?

I'm one of the people who despite getting older feels young at heart. I enjoy fashion trends, makeup and beauty. I spend a lot less buying new products all the time as I've learnt over the year what suits me in terms of makeup. However I love to buy new fragrances, candles and bath and body products.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I read a lot of magazines (my favourites are the weeklies like Heat, New and Now) and I make regular visits to my favourite shops like Selfridges and KIKO. I also go online and visit sites like Feel Unique. I also take inspiration from celebrities like Cheryl and I get ideas from my best friend (we frequently copy each other's clothes and makeup!)

What's it like having a beauty blogger daughter?

I find it intensely irritating the number of parcels we have show up! I'm surprised our neighbours are still speaking to us. But it's nice to have a shared interest we can exchange ideas about. We both like a good shop at KIKO and have similar tastes! It's a good outlet for your creativity and I'm very proud of what you've achieved in a short space of time.

I hope you enjoyed reading this as we certainly enjoyed writing it! Also let me know if you'd like to read more Beauty Chat posts on my blog.

I used to keep to myself whem it comes to besuty as no one in my family knew anything about makeup (which is honestly why I started blogging) but my sisters are slowly getting into makeup. One of them is currently trying to learn how to contour (I feel like a proud mother).

  22. Such a sweet post, my mums a fashion designer, and she hardly wears makeup only a little bit eye liner and a subtle pink shade on her lips would be everything she would go for. But ever since I started blogging she has been enjoying watching me do makeup and is hooked onto highlighters and yet knows nothing about it. haha.
