We all want to get the most out of our skincare routine, and you don't need to go out and buy more products to do so! Today, I'm sharing five tips to level up your skincare game that won't cost you any more money....

Use damp or dry skin strategically

You might have heard the tip that it's best to apply hydrating serums, toners and moisturisers to slightly damp skin. This is because humectants like hyaluronic acid work like hydration magnets, so you want to give them some moisture to draw into the deeper layers of your skin. However, there are other ways you can employ damp or dry skin in routine. Applying products to damp skin generally increases penetration into the skin, so this method can help you get the most bang for your buck if you want to further boost a formula that your skin already tolerates well. The converse is also true; if a product contains strong active ingredients or your skin is adjusting to a higher concentration of an ingredient you use regularly, I recommend letting your skin dry down before applying it. This slows down penetration and minimises any potential irritation. For example, I always apply my retinoid once my skin has dried down.

Get into the habit of taking it all down your neck

This is one of those things I used to hear and think 'yeah, yeah, one day...' and then never really formed the habit consistently. However, once I became aware of it, I did start to notice how much the neck can show sun damage and from there I began to take my sunscreen down my neck and chest, depending on how much of my skin was exposed. From forming that habit, it honestly became natural to take my serum and moisturiser down my neck too. I just have one caveat; if you're using a very strong retinoid on your face like tretinoin, you might want to use a gentler formula on the thinner neck skin. You don't need a special, separate skincare routine for your neck. You don't need to buy more products. Just take what you're already using on your face down the neck; it takes a few seconds and you'll thank yourself for it on day!

Wait 15 minutes before and after applying sunscreen

I often see people applying their skincare products one after another, then going straight in with sunscreen and applying their makeup immediately after, then wondering why it's all pilling up and making a mess! All sunscreens are going to be slightly different, but I use 10-15 minutes on either side as a rule of thumb. This ensures your sunscreen has set down completely before your makeup goes on and ensures it's not disturbing your moisturiser. Obviously, creating a mess with product peeling off the skin is not an effective sunscreen application, so even if you don't wear makeup: ensure you let your moisturiser set down before applying your sunscreen so it works to its full potential.

Never rub your eyes with cotton pads, allow it to soak instead

I always have this feeling that aggressively rubbing and tugging at the delicate eye area is the thing we will come to regret the most one day... So, if you use eye makeup remover or micellar water: try this trick! Instead of rubbing the cotton pad on your eyes; fully saturate it with the product and then hold it over your closed eye for a few seconds to soak off the eye makeup instead. If you need to gently brush the pad against your lashes afterwards (with your eyes open), then do so, as long as you aren't tugging at the skin of the eye area. Prevention is always better than cure, so think of this as saving your future self money on expensive eye creams that probably aren't going to be that effective!

Apply your active serums in dots

My final tip is to apply strong active serums like your retinoid in dots. With these types of products, you're usually only using about one pump (equivalent to - at most - the size of a 5p piece) and you don't want 70% of that to all end up on one part of your face! Not only is it inefficient, but it can also be quite irritating for the areas getting too much of the active ingredient. Instead, you can apply small dots of product evenly across the face and massage it all in to ensure an even application.
