Monthly Makeup Menu #6

2016 has been hurtling by for me, which is always the way when exams loom on the horizon... Apart from one overnight stay with work, I actually spent all of it staying in Manchester. Although I do like my usual pattern of going here, there and everywhere; it's been a nice change. I've also had some real issues with my skin this past few week which affected my makeup choices. I had a really horrible allergic reaction on my face, which was so painful and even when it cleared up my skin was left dry, itchy and flaky. A challenge when most of my favourite base products are for my usual combination skin!

Debenhams is finally stocking this much-hyped primer, so I picked it up at the end of last month. Although it takes a little longer to settle (so it doesn't separate out from my foundation or moisturiser) than I've been used to with Soap & Glory's, it was exactly what my skin needed this month. It's been so tired, dull and dehydrated but this helps add some extra moisture and for my makeup to apply evenly even though it's still quite flaky.

This product has definitely had a resurgence for me this winter but this month in particular, it's the only thing I've been able to use. I know you're not supposed to wear makeup if you've got a facial rash but I really couldn't face going to work with my skin looking so bad and although I knew it was temporary, it did knock my confidence a bit. This is amazing as it's light, non-irritating and hydrating but still gives good coverage for redness and to even out your skin tone. It also doesn't disappear after a few hours of wear. Even though I was wearing makeup, the flare-up still calmed down within a couple of days and this helped with the subsequent uneven skin texture and dryness. So if you have sensitive skin, this could be your perfect base.

This is starting to become one of those products I don't shut up about! Although it kind of just looks like a powder brush, it's incredible for applying bases (especially light and fluid formulas). With the Nars tinted moisturiser, it gives me a flawless, even, skin-like brush stroke-free finish in seconds.

Bourjois Radiance Reveal Concealer | £7.99

There's only really been one under-eye concealer for me this month and that's been the Bourjois Radiance Reveal! It unfortunately only comes in three shades (and I wear the darkest) but if you can find one that works for you then definitely pick this up. It's a peachy corrective colour that has such a light, blend-able coverage that disguises my dark circles so well! I've always found potted creamy correctors can crease a little on me but I've not that that problem with this. This is the perfect mix between a correcting, creamy and highlighting concealer.

Becca x Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Champagne Pop | £32 | post

I know I talk about this all the time but it's such a gorgeous near-universally flattering shade. It's not for those who are shy and retiring when it comes to highlighter but it just applies so beautifully and I love the golden-champagne colour that has a little hint of peach.

Sigma Copper F35 Tapered Highlighter Brush* | $24

I was gutted when my #1 highlighter brush from Sigma was involved in an unfortunate incident with some leaking eyelash glue. Luckily Sigma gave me the chance to try some of their brushes again this month so I got my hands on the copper version. It's so great that they do virtually every brush in their range in copper and you can buy them all individually. Anyway, this is perfect for blending out Champagne Pop and just about any powder highlight. It's just the perfect shape and size for applying the product down the nose, the brow bone and cheekbones. It seems to pick up the perfect amount of powder and just blends it all out effortlessly.

Too Faced Love Flush Blush in Baby Love | £25 | post

I've pretty much exclusively been using this blusher as a natural flush of colour this month. The soft formula applies so nicely and evenly, even when my skin was really patchy and horrible. It's a sort of nude-mauve colour and it has a very slight sheen.

KIKO Rebel Romantic Perfecting Bronzer in 02 Medium-Dark | £12.90 | post

Sorry that this is Limited Edition and no longer available (though you may still be able to get it in-store in the sale) but it's my favourite bronzer and I love it so much I've got two backups! It's just the perfect matte bronzer for creating subtle definition and it sits so nicely on my skin.

Sigma Copper F40 Large Angled Contour Brush* | $22

This is pretty much my perfect brush for an easy contour. I do have the Zoeva Rose Gold Sheer Cheek brush, which looks very similar on first appearance, however that is much larger and more fluffy so whilst it's nice for blending products out or doing a figure-of-3 bronzer application, I can't get much definition with it. This, on the other hand, fits neatly into the hollows of my cheek, and the soft bristles help me apply and blend out the product with ease. Plus I think the synthetic bristles are perfect for getting an even application of face products if you have combination skin like me.

Small Z Palette | £8 with MAC Pro Refill Pans | £10 | post & Makeup Geek Eyeshadow Pans | £4.95-£7.95 | post

The Z Palette is definitely the best way to store individual magnetised eyeshadow palettes and the small fits 9 shadows in for me. A lot of people seem to dislike it but personally it's function, practical and the best option for customising different sized pans from different brands. At the moment I have a mix of Makeup Geek and MAC neutral shades that makes this pretty much my perfect eye palette, whether I want to go for taupe or brown tones. I won't go into all the details on each shades as I have exhaustive posts on my Makeup Geek and MAC collections but in here I have: All That Glitters, Woodwinked, Homecoming, Quarry, Frappe, Cocoa Bear, Sable, Grandstand and Taupe Notch.

Sigma Copper E38 Diffused Crease Brush* | $16

I've been in need of a crease brush that's a little more precise but not too stiff. This fits the bill perfectly! I actually think Sigma eye brushes are really underrated, even by myself, as I do use the ones I have from them virtually every day. This is no exception as it picks up the product and applies it perfectly, allowing me to blend out my crease colour of choice with minimal effort.

Soap & Glory Smoulder Kohl in Black | £5

I've been loving a black kohl to enhance my tight line. It just makes my winged liner look more solid and my lash line look thicker. It makes a subtle but noticeable difference and I really like this non-smudinging formula.

Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal in Nude | £3.99

I don't know why but I picked this up because I'd heard about a nude liner making you look more awake a while back and just never really got round to using it. However this month I dug it back out and gave it a go and I was impressed! The formula is really creamy and the shade is really natural on the waterline for counteracting any redness on the rims of your eyes.

Revlon Ultimate All-in-One Mascara | £9.99

I picked up a few of Revlon's re-vamped mascaras but this has to be my favourite. I really wasn't sure about the wand but it works (don't ask me how!) This is nice and volumising whilst still giving me some length, definition and curl. It isn't a really impactful look but it's nice for everyday wear and doesn't clump. Plus the little wand makes it really handy for the lower lashes and getting into the corners.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light | £38 | post

I've noticed that setting my under-eye concealer after applying all of my eye makeup is the best way to go. It allows my concealer to set a little and also helps to stop any dark eye makeup smudging or transferring. At the moment I'm using Dim Light (a pearly neutral highlighting setting powder) because it did cost me a lot of money and it does work for me, however there are definitely more affordable options out there that'll do the job for you!

Sigma Copper F90 Fan Brush* | $33

This is by far the most soft, thick, luxurious fan brush I've ever come across! It's such a multi-tasker and is amazing whether it's blending out highlighter for a more subtle look, getting a nice, soft contour or sweeping a little powder and clearing any fallout under the eyes. It is pricey but it's very beautiful and is the kind of brush you're going to reach for every day. Personally, I love it for everyday definition with a matte bronzer as it's the perfect size and shape so a couple of sweeps and you're done.

Soap & Glory Archery Brow Pencil & Brush | £8 + NYX Tinted Brow Mascara | £5.50

The Soap & Glory eyebrow pencil is an old favourite for a natural, everyday look. I love the spooly and the texture of the pencil, plus Hot Chocolate is perfect for me (it's not too warm or too greyish). However the NYX brow mascara (hello Benefit dupe!) has been a new discovery. If your brows are fairly even, this is enough in itself but for me I've been using it to keep the hairs in place and add an extra bit of colour and thickness. I have the shade Expresso, which is a tad warm but not works fine. It has a nice little brush and isn't all clumpy and thick with fibres. Plus it keeps everything in place without that stiff, crispy feeling.

MAC Lip Pencil in Spice | £12.50 | post + NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Zurich | £5.50

MAC lipliners are some of my favourites as they're the perfect balance between creamy and waxy. Spice is the perfect warm caramel-brown nude. I'm obsessed with NYX's matte lip creams too as they have that matte finish whilst still being so comfortable on the lips. I have a fair few shades now and the most recent is this peachy-pink nude. Whilst it's gorgeous on its own, pairing it with Spice just takes it to another level. I can't remember how I discovered this combination but I can't stop wearing it lately!

What do you think of this month's makeup menu? What have been your go-tos for February so far?

  13. It is so annoying when your skin is having a hard time! Maybe it also had to do with your exams and stress. Hopefully it'll get better soon! I had never seen the Becca highlighter and it is the most gorgeous thing ever! Overall, I'm really liking the red toned, copper theme you're going for. :)

  29. I wish Bourjois was easier to find here in the States. I remember Sephora used to carry them years ago before I was super into makeup. I also love MAC Spice and agree their lip lines are a great balance between creamy and waxy! A lot of my drugstore lip liners are either too creamy or too waxy. I've been loving the Hourglass ambient powder in Diffused Light for under the eyes because it's yellow toned and adds a subtle radiance so my under eyes don't look dry!
