Blogger-Induced Buys | Were They Worth the Hype?

There's no better way to guarantee us all buying a product that it having the blogger seal of approval. I almost never buy anything without Googling reviews first and I've bought plenty of products on blogger recommendations. I thought I'd do a little round-up of some hyped-up products in the blogosphere and whether I thought they were worth all the fuss or not!

Inspired by... Amelia Liana

This palette has a lot of love but it was seeing Amelia Liana rave so much about it that made it a must-have for me. It didn't disappoint! I love the golden-red shades and although you can only really get one or two looks out of this (for the same price as the versatile Urban Decay Naked...) it's one that is seriously amazing. The packaging is compact yet beautiful and the texture of the shadows is so smooth yet pigmented. I don't reach for this all the time, but I love it for an evening look and it feels special when I do bring it out.

Worth the Hype? Yes

Inspired by... Tanya Burr

Speaking of the Urban Decay Naked palette, just about every blogger raves about this one however I picked it up when I first started watching YouTube treaty gurus after seeing Tanya Burr use it in Mila Kunis makeup tutorial. The quality of both the matte and shimmer shades really sets the standard for eyeshadows. They're smooth, buttery, pigmented and long-lasting. I've never been that tempted by the other Naked palettes as I think the original really is the best in terms of the range of shades to create a warm-toned daytime or smoky eye looks. When I go away I tend to pack this as it's so adaptable and versatile. This is well worth the hype!

Worth the Hype? Yes

I resisted these for SO LONG! However I'm a cream eyeshadow fiend and just had to see if these were worth the splurge after all my favourite YouTubers have raved so much about them. The texture is just amazing; they're so creamy they just glide on, however you get a bit of time to blend before they set in place and last all day. I love the dewy, liquid metal finish they give and the shades are beautiful. Bronze Moon is a gorgeous bronze-gold-brown shimmer and Misty Rock is a rosy-mauve shimmer. They're so incredibly pigmented as well! However, as out-of-this-world as they are, I do think you can get something veeery similar for far less. Namely, the KIKO versions are identical in colour and very comparable in quality.

Worth the Hype? They're pretty amazing, but you can get virtually the same thing for less

Inspired by...Vivanna Does Makeup

I'm a sucker for pretty packaging and the gorgeous metallic casing and stunning marbled effect of the Hourglass blushers sucked me right in. Several bloggers enabled this purchase but I think it was mostly Anna! These each take a shade from the Ambient Lighting Powder line (we will get to that later!) and swirl it in with a colour. I have two of these: Luminous Flush (the champagne-pearl Luminous Light powder + a bright pink-coral) and Mood Exposure (the lavender-pink Mood Light powder + a mauve-plum). If I had to pick then Mood Exposure is my favourite but they're both amazing. I struggle a lot with blusher; either they apply streaky, take a long time and a lot of care to blend or go patchy (or invisible...) by the end of the day. Not with these! They go on with minimal effort, they add a beautiful 'glow from within' without the glitter, last all day and are a lot more pigmented than they look. I cannot rave about these enough!

Worth the Hype? Yes

These are essentially setting powders which also add a highlighting glow; depending on the shade they can lean more towards one or the other. I chose Dim Light as it's a glitter-free pearly sheen finish and the shade is a nice, flattering neutral beige (not too golden, not too silvery). So many people have recommended these but again Anna and Amelia were the two who made me think 'yes, I need this!' I do really like it and use it most days as it turns my shine into glow. The finish is very flattering and I like the naturally radiant look it gives whilst setting my makeup in place for the day. Is it worth £38? The jury is still out on that one. I feel like you can get a nice powder for much less. It's not the kind of obvious, 'wow' product that seems to warrant such a splurge to me. I found the blushes a much better investment.

Worth the Hype? I'm not convinced

Inspired by... let's be real: the entire blogging community!

I can't pin-point this to one individual but for ages I avoided Sheer Glow as I imagined it to be a light, dewy coverage. However it's seriously one of the most mis-named products in my stash! In reality it offers a medium, build-able coverage with a satin finish (not too matte and drying, but keeps your skin shine-free). I remember not being that into it at first but Stromboli is my best colour match in any foundation I own and the finish is perfect for my combination-but-dehydrated skin. I love the matte glow look it gives and I feel my skin looks its best when I'm wearing this. It also lasts really nicely throughout the day. It's one I always return to and is perhaps my holy grail!

Worth the Hype? Yes

Inspired by... Essie Button

I picked this up as an under-eye concealer for summer to wear with lighter bases on Estee's recommendation. I love the light, fluffy formula and the fact it practically blends itself. It's impossible to go overboard or cake-y with this and the coverage is a lot better than you'd expect from this kind of product. I simply use a corrector then blend this out on top of it. For the price it's well worth a go and it's one I reach for every day now.

Worth the Hype? Yes

Inspired by... Amelia Liana

I'm not a big lipliner person so probably won't ever splurge on Charlotte Tilbury's Pillow Talk, however Eastend Snob was pointed out as a potential dupe by Amelia so I thought I'd pick it up. The formula of these is so creamy and pigmented and I love the fact it's twist-up so you don't need to sharpen it. It's a gorgeous pinky-nude shade that pairs up well with so many of my lipsticks and would suit a lot of different skin tones. All in all it's a great little product, especially at under a fiver!

Worth the Hype? Yes

Inspired by... Essie Button

I've heard so many people rave about this overnight facial oil but it was Estee again who finally convinced me to get my hands on it. It can seem a bit scary to put oil on blemish-prone skin, however this doesn't aggravate my breakouts at all. It gives my skin a perk-up in every possible way; it looks plumper, softer, more hydrated, brighter and generally more vibrant. I absolutely love this and use it most nights, yet the fact you only need a couple of drops means I've barely made a dent in this. Of course skincare is a really personal part of beauty, so what works for me may not work for you however personally I felt it was well worth the investment.

Worth the Hype? Yes

Inspired by... Vivianna Does Makeup and Lily Pebbles

I was actually really disappointed with this product when I first tried it, however it's really grown on me since. It's a lovely consistency and you only need a small amount (mine's been going for months and I use it every morning). The gel turns milky on damp skin and there's a lovely, light, non-irritating scent. It makes my skin feel fresher and brighter and it's just such a lovely product to use. I don't feel I've seen many long-term effects from using this and it's not great for removing makeup however I still like it enough to re-purchase it (considering how long a bottle lasts) if I have a discount code of some sort.

Worth the Hype? It's a like but not a love

Inspired by... Gh0stparties

Diptyque candles are a purchase of pure indulgence but from my first purchase I knew I was going to be hooked. Figuier was the second addition and as a huge fan of fig scents, it seemed like we'd be a match made in heaven. I picked this based on a lot of recommendations however Kate was the main blogger who seemed to really love this candle. However I find the scent so subtle considering the price! It's a lovely fragrance but I don't think there's enough throw to make this worth the price. However I love love love the hazelnut fragrance of my other Diptyque candle Noisetier, so I'm open to loving some of their other scents.

Worth the Hype? Not really

1- By Terry Misty Rock, 2 - By Terry Bronze Moon, 3 - Hourglass Mood Exposure, 4 - Hourglass Luminous Flush, 5 - Hourglass Dim Light, 6 - Rimmel Eastend Snob

If you've tried any of these products I'd love to hear your thoughts! Which products did you buy as a result of blogger recommendations? Were they worth the hype?

I picked up the Maybelline Instant Eye Eraser after seeing so many bloggers rave about it but I'm not too impressed with it and I'm beginning to think I've picked up a dodgy one as everyone seems to love it!

  4. I've been wanting the Nars foundation for a while now, definitely need to get my lazy bum into town for a colour match! I bought the Pixi Glow tonic as a result of blogger hype and love it. On the other hand I also got the L'oreal True Match foundation and it was awful on dry skin and didn't last long at all, was gone by dinner time. I think it goes to show you have to take recommendations with a pinch of salt, what some people love you might just not get along with, but at the same time I'd much rather turn to the blogging community for reviews than magazines or just chance it in store.

  5. I absolutely loved this post!! I always enjoy reading reviews/watching videos on highend products but it's always hard knowing if their price tags are worth it, so this has been super helpful :) I've been wanting the naked palette for SO long and I really think I'm going to have to treat myself soon. You've also reminded me how much I want to try Nars Sheer Glow and the rimmel lip liner (it's always out of stock in my local stores which is super frustrating!!)

  7. East End Snob is really beautiful and I also picked it up after seeing so many people talking about it. I got the Naked palette only couple of months ago , basically to see what's the hype about and I think it's a gorgeous palette but, to be honest, I wasn't blown away by it. Really want to try the Nars Sheer Glow foundation, although I was rather disappointed with the new All Day Luminous one. xx

  10. Wow you've certainly fallen into the recommendation trap haha! I like all other bloggers adore my Naked palettes, the maybelline age rewind concealer has been a love of mine for a good couple of years! I just wish the lighter shade was still a little bit lighter though. You've actually made me keen to pick up a sample of NARS sheer glow, I've always shyed away from it due to its name too but I have combination skin also and it isn't easy buying foundations for our skin type haha, so I'm keen to try this now I know it works for you! The Rimmel lip liner sounds lovely, I definitely need to invest in some more lip liners, I only have a couple of MAC ones. I also think £40 for a candle is a little bit ridiculous, not something I'd ever consider investing in. I'm glad most of these products were worth the hype for you!

  21. Great post! For me: love Lush Ultrabland, sadly (because of price) also love Benefit Porefessional and Roller Lash from my experiences with the small sizes of each - not yet bought full sizes though. Like Essie and OPI nail polish but really don't think they're better than any other brands as a lot of nail bloggers claim - they have good shades and bad ones like everything, so I only buy them on sale or if the colour is really special. Soigne the same. I like my Max Factor creme puff blush but don't love it. I love the Essence sun's up blush Pam recommended. Love Soap and Glory Archery pencil and spoolie combo and their super fat cat eyeliner. Will never buy: Femfresh - I absolutely hate the creepy sort-of-native-content thing they're doing with bloggers right now. Oh yes, you ALL have that in your shower. Of course you do.

  60. Brilliant post, it's lovely to hear how you've got on with some products which I'm always reading hype about! The By Terry shadows look gooooorgeous but I'll definitely look into the Kiko ones first :) I love the look of the Hourglass blushers, too - sooo pretty <3
