Today we're talking transitional skincare; the products that take my skin from the light gel formulas of summer into a routine that's a little richer and more skin barrier supporting...
The first product we're going to talk about is the Kate Somerville Goat Milk Cleanser* | £39 | full review. This is a rich but lathering cleanser, meaning it's moisturising, effective and not drying. It has body and isn't overly foaming and contains some great ingredients. These include the titular moisturising and very mildly exfoliating goat milk (this also contains lactic acid), a nourishing and skin-softening cocktail of plant oils (such as jojoba, avocado and grape seed), soothing aloe and rice extract, moisturising and antibacterial honey and bisabolol to calm redness and irritation. I use this as a morning or second cleanse and it's really great for when you want a deep cleanse without stripping your skin of all moisture.
I also have to shout out the Ordinary's Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner* | £12.90 | full review. I personally love a milky toner all year round, I won't lie, however they're especially perfect for the transitional months if you find that your skin is craving an extra layer of hydration. This is a lightweight option that's not overly heavy or tacky, for those who don't usually like milky toners, which is why it's perfect for this in-between stage when we're still getting some warmer days. It's hydrating and honestly feels like a happy skin day in a bottle! It's formulated with fermented goodness to potentially boost the skin barrier and to provide a very slight exfoliating benefit. It also contains squalane, a plant-based skin-similar oil that's nice and replenishing for dry skin. It leaves my skin feeling hydrated and plump and looking radiant and healthy. Perfect if you're suffering from dull skin days as the weather cools down.
Next I have a moisturiser that can honestly work for AM or PM; Skin Rocks' the Moisturiser* | £58 | full review | (very aptly-named!) This formula is the perfect balance of creamy, buttery and melting for my drier skin type as we move from warmer to cooler weather here in the UK. It has a rich and satisfying feel to it (with nourishing ingredients like shea butter and squalane) but also melts in without feeling heavy (thanks to water-based hydrators like glycerin and hyaluronic acid). This is also formulated with ceramides; a fundamental component of the skin's lipid barrier, which is what keeps the skin happy, healthy and balanced. Plus there's Provitamin D3, which we will get into with a product I have later on in this post...
For the daytime, of course we need a sunscreen, and a great option for this time of year is the Klairs All-Day Airy Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA ++++* | £20 (get 15% off with code JASMINETALKSBEAUTY(affiliate)) | full review. This is a cosmetically-elegant, hydrating sunscreen that's perfect for everyday. Honestly, the only reason I don't tend to reach for Korean sunscreens during the summer is because they typically don't have any degree of water-resistance for hot days, which obviously won't be an issue going forwards! This is a melting, water-based lotion that doesn't leave a cast or need much working into the skin. It doesn't pill, it feels incredibly light and it works really well under makeup and alongside the rest of my skincare products. It gives my skin a healthy glow but isn't shiny; it just adds some extra hydration, which my skin definitely needs!
Finally, we have an evening routine booster in the Zelens Power D Vitamin D Concentrate* | £105 | full review. Obviously this isn't an essential and it's pretty pricey (there is a lower-priced mist and moisturiser in this range that I also love and Zelens do regular sales) but I personally love it. I tend to drop facial oils out of my skincare routine for summer, but now's the time of year they get rotated back in. This is a lightweight oil that can be used as a serum step or as you traditionally would with an oil; as the final step in your PM routine. This particular product is formulated with Provitamin D3; a form of Vitamin D that helps to strengthen skin barrier function and encourages it to be more resilient in the face of environmental aggressors. It's also formulated with squalane, Vitamin F (to help prevent the skin from losing moisture), Vitamin E (a fat-soluble antioxidant to protect the skin), soothing bisabolol and plenty of replenishing plant oils rich in fatty acids. I use this product to heal and restore my skin when its having a wobble, but also to just help my skin to be more resilient when the weather changes or even just to use alongside stronger actives like exfoliating acids and retinoids to take the edge off. It works beautifully for my skin and is my ultimate luxury indulgence!
Have you tried any of these products? What do you reach for during the transition from summer to autumn?
