Today we're talking beauty products for post sun exposure. Of course the usual warnings apply around sunscreen, utilising shade and so on, but here in the UK we make the most of whatever sun we get! So, after safely enjoying a gorgeous day at the beach, the park or a beer garden: this is what I like to do to take care of my skin and hair...
After a day at the beach or even if I've been out in the heat wearing makeup and / or water-resistant sunscreen, the first thing I want to do is double cleanse! I really like this gentle duo that does the job efficiently, effectively and without feeling heavy or greasy; the Dr Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Marine Meltaway Cleanser* | £32 | full review | followed by the Ordinary's Glycolipid Cream Cleanser* | £11.10 | full review. The Dr Dennis Gross cleanser is my first cleanse choice because it has a light creamy lotion texture that simply melts on contact with the skin. I don't know how this is an oil-free formula that works at breaking down even dark eye makeup, but it does! Simply massage this onto dry skin and it will lift up makeup and waterproof sunscreen so it can be removed with minimal friction using a damp cloth. I then follow it with the Ordinary's cleanser, which feels like somewhere between a creamy lotion and more of a gel. It's non-foaming and formulated with some of the gentlest surfactants on the market to leave my skin feeling clean and fresh but never stripped!
I have two picks for in the shower, for the hair and the body. I start by shampooing and then reaching for my Dizziak Deep Conditioner | £22 | full review | which is perfect for hair that's looking a little dry after sun exposure. It's a buttery-textured deep conditioning treatment that you probably won't want to use every single day, but is perfect for when you really want to replenish your hair. It's formulated with shea butter, argan oil, coconut oil and aloe for grease-free nourishment. My other in-shower pick is the Naturium Glow Getter Multi-Oil Hydrating Body Wash | £18 | full review. This is a gentle but foaming and highly effective body wash that will cut through sweat, sunscreen and any other grime without taking away too much moisture from your body skin. It's formulated with a high concentration of glycerin to draw hydration into the skin, alongside a cocktail of plant-based oils rich in skin-replenishing fatty acids like roship, squalane and jojoba. It smells amazing, does the job even when I've been exercising in the heat and doesn't leave my naturally dry skin parched after use.
Once we're out of the shower, we want to seal hydration into our skin and hair. I recommend applying a body moisturiser to your skin right out of the shower to lock in hydration and prevent water loss through the skin. Personally, I really enjoy the Aveeno Skin Relief Body Oil* | £9.29 | for this, though they do have a mist lotion spray that's a little lighter if you're not as dry as me. This smells delicious and is formulated with oat and jojoba oils to sooth, nourish and soften the skin. It's also gorgeous if you want that summer body glow; it's not greasy or heavy but leaves that luminosity behind after application. For the hair, I personally love using the Coco and Eve Miracle Hair Elixir | £29. This is a glycerin plus oil hair treatment that can be used on damp hair immediately prior to blow-drying. It's light, non-greasy and non-sticky but softens my hair, really hydrates it post-sun and gives it so much added shine. It's such a quick step but makes a real different to my hair's look and feel.
Finally, two products to look after our skin barriers post-sun. The first is the Byoma Barrier+ Treatment* | £16.99 | full review. This is a moisturiser or a spot treatment balm with the key components of your lipid barrier: ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. There's also ectoin (a promising ingredient for skin healing that I'm seeing in more and more formulas) and replenishing squalane and fatty acids. It's a hug for your face and it actually has a surprisingly light texture, so won't smother your skin in the heat. Finally, a new favourite in the Ordinary's Squalane & Amino Acids Lip Balm* | £8.50. This is a non-greasy, non-shiny lip balm that's been keeping my lips happy this summer (I will definitely be interested in seeing how it performs against my winter lips soon!) with hydrating and softening ingredients like squalane, jojoba esters and glycerin. The waxes in this formula also help to form a seal to prevent water loss through the lips.
What are your favourite skin and hair replenishers for after a sunny day out?
