Speedy Makeup Routines for Day & Night

It's always good to have a fool-proof makeup routine up your sleeve that will ensure you look polished without the need to spend ages on lots of different steps! Today I'm sharing a few little shortcuts for when you want to be pulled-together but don't have a lot of time.

Day

For the daytime I like something fairly breathable but that's give me some coverage and last on my skin and the Estee Lauder Cushion Stick Foundation* (4W1) | £29 | review | always seems to do the trick. You can just swipe this directly onto the skin and I like to blend it out with a damp BeautyBlender* | £17 | for a flawless but natural finish. It gives that perfect light-medium coverage that looks fresh and healthy without being overly dewy. Next I use the Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer (Ginger) | £24 | because it can be applied quickly and easily with the fingers and works both under the eyes and on blemishes. There's just something about the texture and the way it warms under your fingers that means it requires minimal blending and looks very natural on the skin. It's also long-lasting and doesn't crease on me.

On the cheeks Glossier's Cloud Paint in Dusk | £15 | is my weapon of choice. It's a liquid-cream blusher that blends out naturally on the skin to give a pretty wash of colour. It isn't shiny or patchy, like some cream blushers, and lasts really well for me. This is a sort of muted peachy-nude colour that you can't really go wrong with. To add a bit of depth to the eyes I take Makeup Geek's Eyeshadow Pan in Frappe | £4.95 | (though any warm mid-toned matte brown will do) and just use a tapered brush to take it through the crease and run it across the lower lash line. I'm a huge fan of these affordable eyeshadows because the formula is so good overall - Frappe is a warm caramel brown matte that's easy to blend, has great colour payoff and really wears well. To add subtle fullness to my lashes and some definition in seconds, I use the Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner in Stingray | £14.50 | along the tight line.

I then finish off with lashes, brows and lips. The Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara | £7.99 | is perfect for quickly giving my lashes an all-round boost. It adds length, volume and curl without the clump and doesn't flake or smudge. Glossier's Boy Brow (Black) | £14 | is perfect for low-maintenance days. It's a brow gel that has a bit of hold and adds some colour and volume without being too thick and crispy. Finally, a great way to pull a look together without much effort at all is a semi-matte lip colour. I like to go for the MAC Satin Lipstick in Mocha | £17.50 | because it has a creamy, opaque, long-lasting formula. It's a warm pinky-brown nude colour.

Night

For a quick evening look, the Nars Radiant Longwear Foundation (Barcelona) | £35 | is a great option. I isn't that dissimilar to Sheer Glow (I'm going to be doing a comparison post at some point) but it's more full-coverage. It gives a flawless satin look that does last very well on my skin. I apply this with the BeautyBlender too. Next, for a flawless look under the eyes, I love the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer (Medium) | £22. In a few quick swipes and a bit of BeautyBlender dabbing, it gives amazing, crease-proof full coverage without the cake. I tend to set this but when I'm in a rush I usually just get on my way to where I need to go and use the powder I keep in my bag.

To add a bit of warmth and definition, I use my Nars Matte Multiple in Cappadoce | £25. I just swipe this on under the cheekbones and blend things out with the same damp BeautyBlender as I used for my base. For glow and colour in one step, the Becca Mineral Blush in Songbird | £26 | is perfect. It's a warm, almost peachy coppery colour with a very fine golden sheen running through it. Although pigmented, it blends beautifully and wears well throughout the day.

I'm a little bit in love with the Butter London Glazen Eye Gloss in Spark | £15 | right now! It's a sort of jelly-textured eyeshadow that has a gorgeous bronzed metallic finish with fine gold glitter. You don't need much product and I just apply it with my fingers, blending out the edges. When it sets, it has amazing longevity and doesn't crease. If you have a few minutes to spare then run something like Frappe through the crease to add some definition. Then, I use the Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon in Amber Haze | £19 | along the lower lash line and to slightly wing things out. It's a chunky eye pencil that's long-wearing and doesn't smudge. The colour is a warm cognac-toned golden bronze with a soft metallic sheen.

The L'Oreal Lash Paradise Mascara | £11.99 | is the perfect quick and easy option for getting those full, feathery, fanned-out lashes. Again, there's very little flaking or smudging with this one. A quick option for slightly bolder brows is the Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil* (Warm Brown) | £29. The angled shape makes it so easy to get the shape right and you can brush your brows through with the spooly to ensure things look nice and natural. To finish, a matte liquid lip pulls the rest of the look together and I like the Huda Beauty Liquid Matte in Girlfriend | £18. I love this formula because it's not drying or unflattering. It gives a lasting, totally-matte finish and it's very opaque. This is a warm sandy nude.

  3. I find when I'm in a hurry a bright lipstick is the way to go. I reach for a strong red or a berry pink lip with minimal makeup. I love the Charlotte Tilbury eyeshadow pencils, but I tend to use them all over the lid to save even more time!
