Creating a Flawless, Glowing Base

There's something about winter that makes me want to do a completely flawless base for the evening. However I also don't want anything that's overly dry or makes my skin look dull. Today I'm going to share my flawless but glowing base routine.

Prime

I always, always prime my skin before applying my makeup and for this kind of look I opt for the Becca Backlight Priming Filter | £32. This just gives my skin a nice amount of hydration, as well as some extra glow. It's not a hugely smoothing primer, so if I feel I need it then I'll apply some of the Benefit Porefessional | £24.50 | on my cheeks where I tend to get enlarged pores. This just stops makeup settling into them and emphasising their appearance.

Correct

This is a step you can skip if you don't suffer from any kind of discolouration, however I get pretty bad dark circles so use the Bobbi Brown Corrector (Peach) | £19.50. The peach colour of this cancels out the blue tone of dark circles without the need to cake on loads of concealer later. Depending on your skin concerns, there are a wide range of colours and products to even out the tone of your skin (like for lavender sallowness or yellow for redness).

Foundation

For me, Nars Sheer Glow (Stromboli) | £31 | just always works! It's a medium-coverage foundation but can easily be built on in any problem areas. It has a satin finish and gives me the 'matte glow' I'm looking for. It's long-lasting and gives me perfected, flawless skin. I buff it into my skin with the Zoeva 102 Silk Finish Brush | £13 | to get an even, brush stroke-free finish.

Conceal

I feel like this is where it gets a bit more complicated, but each product in my arsenal does serve a purpose! Recently, under the eyes I've been loving using the Kat Von D Lock It Creme Concealer (M27) | £20. It's one of the most hydrating complete-coverage concealer formulas I've ever used. It doesn't feel too thick or heavy but can cover a multitude of sins! The colour I use is one shade lighter than I'd use on the rest of my face so it also highlights under the eyes. It's a long-wearing concealer that doesn't crease on me and is perfect for when you want that flawless skin look. I use a damp (but not wet) BeautyBlender | £16 | to blend the product out seamlessly.

For the face, I use the Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer (Medium Neutral) | £17.50. This has a light, fluffy, easy-to-blend formulation but still gives really great coverage. It's nothing too dry or too slippery and has amazing wear-time. I use the Sephora Pro Airbrush Concealer Brush #57 | $24 | to gently buff the product into my foundation. I then go back in with the BeautyBlender to ensure everything looks seamless.

Highlight

To finish off under my eyes, I use the YSL Touche Eclat (4.5 Luminous Sand) | £25 | liquid highlighting pen, again with the damp BeautyBlender. It's light in terms of coverage but is incredibly luminous. I also use a powder highlighter with the Zoeva 129 Luxe Fan Brush* | £11 | on my brow bone, cheekbones and down the bridge of my nose (I don't tend to highlight my chin or forehead as I have combination skin and tend to get oily there). My favourite highlighter is of course the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Champagne Pop | £32 | review & swatch. This isn't at all glittery; it just has the most incredibly smooth formula that practically melts into the skin and gives this incredible dewy finish. The shade itself is a stunning champagne-gold with peachy undertones.

Set

Finally, it's time to set everything in place with the MAC Mineralise Skinfinish Natural (Medium Dark) | £24. It has a very lightweight, natural coverage and despite being a powder it isn't matte or flat; it actually gives a luminous finish. I press it onto the skin using the Morphe E3 Precision Pointed Powder Brush | £14.95 | so I'm not moving my base around. The tapered shape also makes it easy to set under my eyes. At this time of year, I'm less concerned about keeping my skin shine-free; the powder is generally enough for that. So I use the MAC Fix + | £17.50 | to give my skin a bit of dewiness and to ensure everything looks nice and seamless.

  2. I've been out of primer recently (and it's quite a tragedy) but I've had my eye on the Becca Backlight Primer Filter, it looks amazing! I don't think longevity is an issue for me, so I think it may just be my next purchase! xo

    1. I personally don't find it does; it isn't really for locking in your base, it's more about making it look natural and healthy xx

  4. I've been braving glowy makeup looks lately while I can...before my skin becomes super oily again haha! The Becca primer sounds great, though I do wonder how it compares to the L'Oreal Lumi Magique...I really should colour correct but usually forget lol! xxx

  5. I've been definitely enjoying luminous skin, it just makes me look more youthful. I'm loving to set my foundation with the Laura Geller Baked foundation for an extra touch of coverage but also beautiful luminous finish to my skin. x

  6. I have definitely been eyeing up Urban Decay's Naked Skin concealer. It's just so hard to find a good concealer that blends in well and doesn't crease, making it obvious that you're wearing some! Thanks for sharing :) I love following your blog. Always some great reviews to look forward to!

  8. Lovely picks, I keep wondering whether or not I should try the YSL Touche Eclat, I absolutely love my Mac Prep+Prime highlighter, yet I keep reading that the YSL one is even more lightweight and thin on the skin, have you used the Mac one before?

    1. I wouldn't personally apply highlighter to the areas where I would be setting my makeup (i.e. The oily parts!) I sometimes do apply powder over highlighter though if I feel like my highlighter is too much. A difference in what way? It definitely makes the skin more glowing xx

  11. Loved this post, it was super helpful! I cannot go a day without priming my face! However I found that the best primer for me personally is actually from the drugstore - L'Oreal Infallible primer! I'd love to try out the Benefit primer too as I've heard such amazing reviews. Thanks for sharing. Your posts are always so informative xx

  20. I am currently love the L.A. Girl foundation & Natasha Denona Foundation & the new Tarte concealer is great for complete coverage, without being cakey. I also love finishing with the Hourglass Surreal palette. I'm in two minds about buying that Kat Von D concealer - Leanne thought it might be too thick for my liking - how does it compare to Nars radiant concealer, for example? Or the IT Cosmetics one if you've tied that? xx

    1. I've not tried the IT Cosmetics one - I personally find it thicker but less drying than the Nars. I actually compare them fully in my Concealer Showdown post xx
