Customised Beauty | Creating Your Own Perfect Products

Anyone can go and buy a product off the shelf in Boots but isn't there something so special about personalising it and having something that everyone can't just go out and buy? Today I'm bringing you three products I customised myself and how you can do the same!

Bite Beauty Lip Lab | $55 each | Ok, I have to admit this is not the most accessible thing to do given that you can only do it in one place in one city. However if you're a beauty-lover and you're planning a trip to New York then you HAVE to get an appointment at the Bite Beauty Lip Lab! You get a slot of around an hour to create your perfect shade with one of their specialists. First you decide what finish you want and I of course opted for Matte! Next you talk through what sort of a shade you're after to give them a starting point and they'll mix something along those lines and you can tweak it. I'm not sure how many times I said things like 'a bit more pink' 'oh actually more brown please' 'oh, wait I think the pinker version looked better' but they were very patient with me!

Eventually you have a little selection of versions of your lip shade from which you choose which you want to go ahead with. We actually ended up making two because she asked me if I wanted to do another 'for fun' and of course I ended up loving that too! You then get to choose which scent you want and I opted for wild berries with one and the classic vanilla with another. You also choose which lid you'd like; ok they're all quite similar but I chose a slanted design which was different to the other Bite Beauty lipsticks I own just so I could tell that these were the ones I'd made. The lipsticks were then made right in front of my eyes, boxed up and I was given the 'recipe' for each (you can see all of the custom options at the source I've linked).

The lipsticks themselves are fantastic, they're pigmented with a creamy (though not quite fully matte) finish that's very comfortable to wear. I created a pinky-mauve nude and also a more coral-toned warm nude. They both work really well on my skin tone and it just feels so special to use them knowing I made them myself and they'll always remind me of that incredible trip to New York.

Odacite #MySkinCocktail* | £25-£47 | A couple of months back I was contacted by Odacite to try a new concept; essentially everyone gets the Synergie[4] Immediate Skin Perfecting Beauty Masque in their skincare recipe and then you choose two natural oils from their vast array that are tailored to your skincare needs.

The face mask is a dry clay formula that you mix in with water (you also get a cute little whisk and bowl to mix it together in!) You can get a thicker or more lightweight formula depending on how much water you mix in so it's completely up to you what kind of a mask you want from this (though it is a bit of a faff to do the mixing). The mask contains charcoal, clay, Vitamin C, enzymes and fruit acid, so they're the sort of ingredients that will work for any skin type. Even when used alone, I find this mask gives my skin a deep cleanse, helping it to stay clear and look more radiant.

Then there are two serums, which again can be used alone, however they're also amazing for mixing in with the mask to boost its effects. I suffer from both blemish-prone and dull skin so I chose oils that combat those issues, however there's a huge array to choose from which are recommended for different skin concerns so there's something in there for everyone. I chose Radiance Green Tea and Lemongrass, plus Clogged Pores Jojoba and Lavender. Both smell amazing (especially the relaxing scent of the lavender) and contain no nasties; you're getting the pure oil and nothing else. Green Tea and Lemongrass is amazing for when my skin is looking tired, grey and just all-round rubbish! It really brings back some of that glow and gives a healthy, hydrated look to my skin, whilst leaving it super-soft. The Jojoba and Lavender is aimed at clearing congestion, tightening up pores and preventing blemishes. It does actually make my pores look a little less visible, though I realise no skincare product is ever going to erase them! It also helps to clear up any painful bumps or annoying blackheads. I either use them overnight or mixed in with the face mask depending on what my skin is telling me. I love the concept of a 'skin cocktail' and really recommend all the Odacite products I tried.

Fragrance By Me* | from £20 | This was such an interesting concept to me that I just had to get involved! The concept is that based on your fragrance preferences, the team at Fragrance By Me will concoct your perfect scent.

You start by going onto their website and selecting your favourite scents; their fragrance library is extensive and although my selections aren't exactly really popular products, they still came up when I typed them in. I chose three scents and I'd advise you to choose your three carefully so they are in the same sort of family. I probably wouldn't suggest choosing a light, floral, chic scent and then something deep, heady and masculine! I opted for my three favourite summer fragrances: Nuxe Bougie Prodigieuse, Diptyque Philosykos and Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess. The website then draws out the key notes, listing the ones that are common to all of them first to help you out. You select which you want to be in your perfume and you can order your perfume directly from there or order a starter kit.

The starter kit comes with the scent you mixed yourself and then two others based on the notes you chose. For me, the one I mixed myself was exactly what I'd wanted and it was a no-brainier that I'd go with that. It was everything I'd hoped it would be; the perfect fruity, sun-kissed scent. All the notes complimented each other perfectly and I love this scent. It isn't overpowering but lasts well on my skin. The packaging of the final product isn't anything fancy but it's stylish enough and there's nothing to dislike about it, though I think it would be great if they made it so you could select the bottle design too.

I think that when Christmas comes around this would also be an amazing gift; if you're just to buying a relative or your other half the same fragrance every year then it's a great way to switch things up. You can just sneak a peak at which fragrances are on their shelf and go from there!

  7. I haven't created a customized product in a lab, but I do like to customize products myself at home. I do my own tinted moisturizer by mixing my foundation with my regular moisturizer, I mix my favorite shimmery eyeshadow with moisturizer or oil for a custom made highlighter etc. If you play around with your makeup you will find the possibilities are endless!

  24. I love the concept of a tailored face mask. That sounds perfect. In a shopping center close to me I have seen a sort of lip lab set up, it's not exactly the same but I definitely want to try it out. Not that I need more nude shades but creating some nude shades would be perfect. Great post!
