The Everyday Lip Drawer

I think the one makeup product that seems to give me joy above all others is probably lipstick! I thought that today I'd give you a little peak into my everyday lip drawer. I've tried not to think too much about what to include, so this is just a really honest reflection of the products I love and use on a regular basis.

Sheer

Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil in Red Berry* | £18 | This is my go-to on 'no makeup' days when I want to hydrate my lips and add a hint of rosy colour and a glossy finish. It's so nourishing and gives that wet look without the stickiness of a gloss. It smells so nice and fruity and though it doesn't last for ages on the lips, I really don't mind reapplying this during the day!

Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments in Petal & Honey | £19 each | It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of these as a lip balm formula; they're just so nourishing but not too heavy for everyday use. I have two shades in this: Petal (a pinky-rose colour) and Honey (a very warm brown-nude). These are actually way more pigmented than you might expect from a tinted lip balm and are my go-tos when I'm really not sure what to wear.

Clinique Chubby Stick Intense Balm in Curviest Caramel | £17 | Another one I can trust to go with just about any makeup look and grab when I'm halfway out of the door! This is a light to medium pinky-brown nude in a hydrating, sheer-but-creamy formula. I must admit I find the nude shades in the original Chubby Stick range a little bit insipid however this is much more pigmented.

MAC Lustre Lipstick in Jubilee | £15.50 | This is one of the first lipsticks I've ever nearly finished! It's quite sheer and sheeny so I feel like it'll look a little different on everyone who wears it, however for me it's a 'my lips but better' warm brown nude that just adds a little hint of colour. It's one of those ones I reach for all the time on work days.

Satin

Bite Custom Matte Lipsticks in Coral Nude & Pink-Mauve Nude | $45 each | These are billed as a matte lipstick formula, however to me they're more of a creamy, satin finish. Apologies but these are my custom shades that I made at the Bite Beauty Lip Lab in New York, however if you're ever in Soho, I 100% recommend booking in and creating your own perfect lipstick. The formula is so comfortable, though not quite as long-wearing as a true matte. I created two shades: a coral-toned warm nude (a Summer version of my usual lip shade is what I was going for) and a pink-mauve nude.

ColourPop Matte Lippie Stix in Brink | $5 | This is another formula that is categorised as 'matte', however still has a bit of a sheen. I love this shade because it's kind of like all my favourite MAC nude lipsticks blended into one; think Velvet Teddy, Taupe and a tiny hint of Twig. This is such a great, smooth, non-drying formula in a really gorgeous shade. I still can't believe it's so affordable and in case you hadn't heard: ColourPop will be shipping internationally as of tomorrow!

Matte

Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipstick in Clay Crush | $8.99 | I went all over the place trying to find these lipsticks in New York and I'm so glad I finally tracked them down. I have to admit that I've been so obsessed with this shade that the others I picked up have barely had a look-in! However the formula itself is really lovely; it isn't quite as opaque as a drier matte would be with one swipe however it's very comfortable. It doesn't cling to dry patches but still gives a true matte finish. It's a very warm nude shade with clay-orange undertones.

MAC Matte Lipsticks in Taupe & Mehr | £15.50 each |
I definitely think the formula of MAC's mattes can be hit-and-miss however the long-lasting but creamy texture of these two definitely makes them winners! I love me some Velvet Teddy but I can't help but think that Taupe is the perfect matte brown nude for my skin tone. Ignore the name because this is a gorgeous caramel-toned mid-brown nude. Mehr is a gorgeous dusky pink with a hint of mauve. It's perfect for when I want something less than a bright but more colourful than a nude. It's one of my go-to lip colours when I want something that can take me from day through to night.

Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dolce Vita | £20 | I really wish there were more shades that did it for me in this range because the formula is amazing. It's slightly sheer, almost like a stain effect, and has a very comfortable consistency. The shade Dolce Vita is so unique; it's a rose colour that's both vibrant and muted at the same time.

Liquid

ColourPop Ultra Satin Lip in Echo Park | $6 | Another bargain winner from ColourPop! This gives all the pigmentation and almost as much longevity as the Ultra Matte formula, however is so much more comfortable and less drying on the lips. Echo Park is a peachy-pink nude that surprisingly really works for my skin tone!

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Zurich | £5.50 | This is just on the verge of being too light for me but it actually pairs beautifully with Spice (which we will get to later). Even on its own, though, it's a gorgeous light-medium vibrant peachy-pink nude. I find this formula so comfortable and non-drying, though not quite as pigmented and durable as a true matte liquid lipstick. I also really like the shade Cannes too, however it's quite similar to Committed (which is coming up) so I thought I'd skip over it.

Dose of Colors Matte Lipstick in Truffle | £14.50 | This is one of my favourite slightly lighter, more cool-toned nude lip shades. It reminds me a lot of Velvet Teddy, actually. I love the applicator of this because it's curved and makes the product a lot easier to apply. The formula has intense colour payoff, however stays very slightly tacky so never dries out my lips. Best of all it can still last me a good 6 hours!

NYX Lip Lingerie Liquid Lipstick in 04 Ruffle Trim | £6.50 | These are definitely a little more drying than the Soft Matte Cream formulation, however it's nothing major that a bit of exfoliation and lip balm can't resolve. This is a warm nude shade with terracotta undertones. These also have pretty good longevity for me!

Gerard Cosmetics Hydra Matte Liquid Lipstick in Everything Nice | £9.50 | This is one of those shades I just can't stop wearing! 'Hydrating' may be overstating it but this is so non-drying and comfortable to wear, plus it still delivers on the wear-time. It's a beautiful very warm-toned caramel nude colour.

The Balm Meet Matt(e) Hughes Long-Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Committed | £13.50 | As far as wear-time goes, this is one of the best in my arsenal! It's slightly more drying than some of the others, however it's nothing major. It's a pinky-nude colour that just brings my face to life in a really subtle way. It's hard to describe but this just seems to 'pop' on my skin tone.

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquid Lipstick in Sell Out | $21 | This is a slightly deeper, more muted pink-brown shade. It swatches fairly light however dries down to be a little darker in my experience. It's probably the same level of 'drying' as Committed but again that's made up for because of the amazing longevity. I really love the packaging of this one too and hope they come to the UK soon (though in the meantime you can grab them via Sephora)!

Pencil

MAC Lip Pencils in Spice & Soar | £12.50 each | When it comes to lip pencils, MAC tends to win for me! They're that perfect balance of creamy enough that they don't dry out your lips or skip on application and waxy enough to increase the wear time of your lipstick and stop the colour from bleeding. They have enough pigmentation to wear on their own or layer with other shades to alter the colour. Spice is a gorgeous warm brown nude that's pretty much Taupe in pencil form. I also love it with Zurich, as mentioned, to create a pinky-brown 'my lips but better' shade or with something like Velvet Teddy to warm up the tone a little. Soar is like Mehr's pencil equivalent and works so well with pink and mauve colours.

  3. I really like the ColourPop Lippie Stix in Brink as well and I'm sure that's just a matter of time before I purchase Mac Taupe, I also believe the Mac Matte formula depends a lot on the actual lipstick shade, the everyday, more neutral shades are always less drying than the bold ones!
