Choosing the Right Face Oil for Your Skin

I think that face oils are having a bit of a revival; once upon a time most of us cringed at the thought of putting an oil on our faces (especially those of us with spot-prone skin!) however there are so many on the market these days that I think there's really something out there for everyone. 'Oil' also doesn't need to mean heavy; the new breed of face oils are lightweight and fast-absorbing and a lot of people even wear them during the day time!

I like to use a face oil overnight 3-4 times a week and having combination skin means I take into account the season and what my skin is telling me when choosing which to go for. From having very spotty skin a few years back to having extremely dry and sensitive skin during the past winter, I think I've experienced just about every skin concern! This means I'm pretty well-placed to suggest a few depending on what your problem areas are.

For Spot-Prone Skin

The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil | £8 | For skin that's prone to breakouts or even to calm down acne a little, I really recommend tea tree products. Definitely don't over-use this because it can be a little bit astringent and only apply it to active breakouts, because if you're putting it on red marks that are starting to scar, you're only really going to dry out your skin. However, used correctly, this is an amazing fix for the occasional breakout when you really just need it gone fast! I just apply a little of this with a cotton wool bud before bed on any active breakouts and by morning they've either disappeared or reduced considerably in size and 'angriness'. It's definitely the most daunting to use an oil on oily skin, however this technique can really help to improve blemished skin.
Ingredients include: Water, Tea Tree Oil, Antioxidant

For Dull, Tired Skin

Trilogy Organic Rosehip Antioxidant* (£31.50 for full size) | It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of the original rosehip oil that Trilogy do, however lately I've really been enjoying the Antioxidant version when my skin has been a bit dull and lifeless. I've been travelling with the mini from this set and oils last so long that I reckon I've got another month or two's use out of it. It has such a nice, light texture and you really don't have to overload the skin too much with it. I find it hydrates my skin as well as having a plumping effect and just leaves my skin looking more fresh and healthy overall.
Ingredients include: Certified Organic Rosehip Oil, Acai Fruit Oil, Cranberry Seed Oil

Ooh! Oils of Heaven Organic Moringa Anti-Oxidant Face Oil* | £19 | I'd actually never tried Moringa in any other product besides the Emma Hardie Cleansing Balm, which I absolutely love! Therefore my expectations of this product were pretty high. This absorbs so nicely into my skin and doesn't feel heavy or leave an excess on my skin, so if you're more on the combination side like me; this is a great overnight treatment. I really notice that this refreshes and revives my skin and makes it look so much better overall. When I got back from New York, the flying and lack of sleep just left me looking a little bit tired and rubbish in general. This really helped to get that hydration, radiance and plumpness back into my skin.
Ingredients: 100% Organic Moringa Oliefra Kernel Oil

The Body Shop Oils of Life Intensely Revitalising Facial Oil | £28 | This is definitely the most amazing-smelling of the bunch! However for more sensitive skin, that may be a drawback. It's a little heavier than some of the other options so it's definitely one for more normal-dry skin (for me it's a definite winter product). It feels very luxurious on the skin and I do find it makes my skin look healthier and more hydrated. The only reason I'm not a little more enthusiastic is because the Moringa and Rosehip Antioxidant give me the same sort of effects, and the Moringa is £19 and the Trilogy is £16 for a set which also contains other products I love.
Ingredients include: Jojoba Oil, Antioxidant, Lavender Oil

Ooh! Oils of Heaven Natural Cacay Anti-Aging Face Oil* | £39 | Like all the products in this range, I really appreciate how weightless this feels on my skin. I think when winter comes around I will be happy to wear this during the day if I'm going makeup-free. This was the one I started using after Spain, because again I was feeling a little worse for wear and my skin was showing it! I wouldn't be put off by the 'anti-aging' label because this is just a pure oil that happens to contain those properties. It's very hydrating and I find that after using this my skin is more glowing and any dehydration lines are much less visible. However, as someone with young skin, I didn't find this did anything different or extra beyond what the other two Oils of Heaven products did, given that it's essentially double the price. This might be one that mature skin will see the effects of more.
Ingredients: 100% Caryodendron Orinocense Seed Oil

For Dry Skin

Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate | £37 | This is an old favourite of mine that's kind of been overtaken by other options these days, however is still well worth a mention! This is a blend of essential oils that has a heavier texture than some of the others, however absorbs well if you apply it 20-30 minutes before bed. It's very restorative and the first time I used this product I was absolutely amazed at how it made my skin look better in every single way possible. It doesn't quite pack the punch it once did for me in terms of results, however it's still well worth checking out if you have dry and/or mature skin.
Ingredients include: Evening Primrose Oil, Lavender, Omega 6 Fatty Acids

Ooh! Oils of Heaven Organic Rosehip Cell-Regenerating Face Oil* | £19 | Since being converted to rosehip oils, I haven't looked back however I was excited to try a new one. When you're talking 100% organic rosehip oil there's obviously only so much variation you're going to get, however you get a nice big bottle of this for under £20 so you really can't go wrong! This year I've had some real issues with my skin flaring up and then going very dry and sensitive afterwards and I experienced this last month (which is quite strange because it's usually only in cold weather). This is one of the products I credit with being gentle enough not to aggravate the sensitivity and also really hydrating my skin, leaving it softer and in much better condition.
Ingredients: 100% Organic Rosa Canina Seed Oil

  1. I really want to try some Trilogy products.I don't believe I've ever heard bad things about the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate, I'm really fastidious when it comes to beauty oils, but, because this one is more of a serum, I believe I will like it!

  12. I use straight up mineral oil (or Albolene, which is mineral oil and a few ingredients that make it a meltable, neo-sporin like consistency) to remove makeup and cleanse. It's non-comedogenic because mineral oil molecules are too large to enter your pores, it has no fragrance or additives that can cause a bad reaction, and it's super cheap. It works as well, if not better, than every fancy face oil I have tried. A lot of these actually use mineral oil as their base. I's a good place to start from when you begin face oil journeys.

  13. The oils of life from body shop is my favourite, I tend to mix that in with a light moisturizer for extra hydration. I also like Drops of youth too thats more like an oil/serum but it's still a goody!. That Keilhs one sounds so heavenly I may have to try that one out too !

  15. I totally agree on the Kiehls oil, it's just such a staple product, I do find it difficult to use an oil when it gets to the warmer months though as I just always feel sticky anyway! Do you get that? Maybe I'm just strange lol xoxo
