I feel like MAC lipsticks are something of a controversial topic in beauty (ha!) You get people on one side saying 'OMG, they're so overrated!' and on the other side there are the people who act like literally no other lipstick brand in the world exists. I'm definitely in the camp that sits on the fence. They'll always hold a special place in my collection, because (and I'm sure I'm not the only one) they were the first 'proper', 'fancy' lipstick I ever got. Since then I've grown up a bit, have a bit more pocket money and discovered they aren't the be-all and end-all of high-end lipsticks. However, credit where credit is due: they're still a good deal cheaper than Nars, Charlotte Tilbury, YSL and so on, plus their shade range really is unrivalled. Apologies in advance if these might be a little too much in the same colour family for some people but I'm just being honest about the shades I use the most! Without further ado, these are my top 5...
5. Plumful (Lustre)
This is what I reach for when I want something a little deeper with a wash of colour that's still really wearable on an everyday basis. The Lustre finish is one of my favourites; although it isn't the most long-lasting, I love the sheer formula. Plumful, as the name would suggest is a reddish-purple plum tone. The sheer finish makes this my go-to daytime winter lip.
4. Twig (Satin)
This is an oldie but a goodie: my second ever MAC lipstick! It has a Satin finish which is semi-matte but has a little bit of a sheen. If you find matte lipsticks too drying then this formula is the perfect solution because it's that bit creamier but still has the pigmentation and lasts almost as long. Twig itself is just one of my perfect lip shades; it's this gorgeous deep, dusky pink-mauve. Every time I get it back out, I remember why I love it so much!
3. Taupe (Matte)
This is pretty much to me what Velvet Teddy is to a lot of people! Don't get me wrong, I really like Velvet Teddy but sometimes it borders on 'concealer lips' for me. This, however is my perfect brown-toned nude lip. I don't know why it's called Taupe; completely ignore the name because it's a gorgeous warm-toned caramel-brown nude. Not all MAC Matte lipsticks are created equally, but this one is just so creamy, comfortable and long-wearing!
2. Jubilee (Lustre)
I've actually almost finished this and that never happens to me! I picked this up back in the days when if Tanya Burr recommended it, I was buying it - which has actually served me well on several occasions! It's just a perfect everyday lip colour that I always grab when I'm in a rush because it's totally work-appropriate and goes with any neutral look. It's a sheer, sheeny brown-toned nude that's just a great 'my lips but better'. Again, it isn't long-wearing but the colour means it doesn't fade patchily and the formula makes it really easy to touch up even without a mirror.
1. Mehr (Matte)
Sometimes you want something that's more vibrant than a nude but more muted than a proper colour and Mehr fits the bill perfectly in that respect. It's a sort of deep, dusky rose colour. It has more of a pink tone to it than Twig and has a proper matte finish. Again, it's very creamy in texture and long-lasting. I think it's a flattering shade on so many people. It's not a really bright eye-catching colour but it gives you a really sophisticated evening look whilst also working for the day.
