Overhyped Beauty Products

I feel like these kinds of posts can get a little heated so I thought I'd just remind everyone: this is beauty. I'm not criticising your child. I always give products a good go, in several different ways before declaring I don't like it (so yes I tried it with a primer, yes I tried it as a morning cleanser as well as to remove my makeup etc. etc. etc.) Sometimes things just don't work out! It doesn't mean they won't for you, it's just you may want to do a little more research or look out for similar alternatives. I also don't necessarily dislike these products, I don't just think these are that amazing to justify the price or fanfare they seem to get. For reference, I have combination skin that's very prone to shine in summer but gets a little dry in winter. Let's dive in!

It took me a while to build up to spending £38 on a setting powder and I even wince thinking about it now! I'd heard incredible things about how perfect and luminous this makes your skin look. I chose Dim Light as a neutral, pearly, glitter-free shade that would work well for more than one use. So I handed over the cash, confident it would be worth the hype. There's nothing I dislike especially about this product but there's just nothing to write home about either. For me it's just 'ok' or 'nice'. It's good as an under-eye setting powder and it's an ok highlighter but I have better in my stash. It really doesn't do that much for me. I do wonder if this is more appropriate for mature skin. I keep using it as it was so expensive and it works fine, but it represents broken beauty hopes and dreams for me... If you're looking to invest in Hourglass then I'd steer you towards the Ambient Lighting Blushes because they really are something special.

Another cult product and to be honest I feel similarly about it to the Hourglass powder in that it's nice but far too expensive and not life-changing enough for me to understand the hype around it. Maybe it's better on different skin types but I wouldn't really know. I don't like using this for removing makeup as it stings my eyes and isn't very effective on the rest of my face. It's much better as a morning cleanser on clean but not wet skin. It smells lovely and feels very luxurious on the skin, but I can't really say it really 'does' a huge amount for my skin. It looks a little fresher and more glowing but nothing that impressive. One positive of this product, however, is that it lasts a really long time; you only need a pump or two and it can easily last you 6 months. Also, it is a really quick, easy product to use to freshen up your skin on a busy weekday morning. It was on this basis and with a discount code that I did end up repurchasing this as it is 'decent' but just didn't knock my socks off like I'd hoped. If you want a similar formula that gives you amazing, glowing skin try the Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser. If you're feeling spend-y and want to treat yourself then fair enough; go for the Oskia. If you wouldn't usually buy something at this price-point but you've been saving up to invest in a premium product that you want to see amazing results from, I'd probably give it a miss.

I rarely say I hate a product but I think I hate this! It's a bit of a love/hate thing to be fair, as it can work for me when used in a very specific way however if used any other way, it looks awful. It's a very thick, dry texture with a complete, full coverage. Used under the eyes it just looks cake-y, dry (even though my eye area is quite oily) and seems to rub off within a few hours (despite the name). On blemishes it can actually work, perhaps as the skin around a breakout is naturally more oily so this counteracts the texture of the concealer. Also the small application area means it doesn't look too thick. It really does completely conceal them though, which is perhaps why this is so popular, especially with teenagers. It also comes in a very narrow shade selection and they are all neutral-based colours so don't really suit me. I'm not saying don't give this a go, as it's £4 at the end of the day, but it doesn't really work for me and I'll be sticking to my Nars

Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation | £9.99

I finally decided to pick this up when my skin started getting drier recently. The colour match isn't great but I can sort-of work with it. I didn't actually find it that hydrating, I felt as though it just sat on top of my skin and didn't look very natural. In some ways I think it may have even enhanced the dryness whilst making my t-zone shiny, which is the opposite of what I want! It didn't give particularly good coverage or even out my skin tone like my favourite light base (Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser). I also didn't feel as though it was very long-wearing on my skin. It's ok, I guess...but overall this just fell a little flat for me. I was expecting more from such a talked-about product.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal | £34 | post

This is nice but the look I get from it (whether as a primer underneath foundation, mixed in with it or as a highlighter on top of it) is just very subtle for the price. Sometimes I kind of forget I'm even wearing it!  If you're a high-coverage kind of girl, you're probably not going to see much of a difference unless you use it on top of your base, though it's more noticeable if mixed with a tinted moisturiser (though still a super-subtle look). The consistency is really nice and the shade Opal is a gorgeous neutral pearly tone that's perfect for a natural highlight. I would say that you'd be better off spending your money on the Pressed or Poured version as they're even a little cheaper and you can actually tell you're wearing it (in a good way!) For a more subtle option, go for the Poured (as it does what I thought the liquid would do) or to dial it up, go for the Pressed. If you really want a liquid highlighter/primer then the Revlon Skinlights in Bare is pretty much identical to Opal.

The Original BeautyBlender | £16

This is one of those products I feel like I'd love a lot more if it was under a tenner. I personally don't especially like it to apply my foundation or my concealer and I've found that for me it works best when used slightly damp or when spritzed with a setting spray (after I've applied my base with brushes) to just go over everything and make sure it's seamlessly blended together. It is handy and it's especially good if you have a foundation that's not 100% the right colour and you're using a concealer that is to even things out, however I guess I just expected it to be a bit more life-changing for the hype. From my concealer trick, I can see why a lot of beauty gurus like it as if you're wearing quite heavy makeup like serious cream contouring, this can blend out harsh lines or a very thick base. However I don't really do what I like to term the 'Instagram' look so for me it's not that much more impressive than the Real Techniques version that's 1/3 of the price. Also, you do have to replace these really regularly which can be a costly commitment at £16 a pop. I could happily do my everyday makeup without this so whilst I like using it for now, I won't bother repurchasing it once it's had its day.

L'Oreal Infallible Matte Foundation | £7.99

Sharpen your pitchforks because I straight-up HATED this foundation! I feel like the formula could be something I like but the shades are just so bad it's impossible to separate the two. It's hard to tell if it's the shade, the formula or both but I just don't like the way it sits on my skin; it looks a bit mask-like. It does stay intact and shine-free throughout the day and gives a matte look that's not too flat. However I just think this looks 'off' on me. The colour selection is really poor and the closest match for me is really pink-toned and just looks ashy and strange on my skin. The limited and slightly odd shades available makes it really hard to even mix different colours to get a match. Maybe I'll give this a go again if they ever bother releasing more shades in the UK but in the meantime I will stick with Nars Sheer Glow and Estee Lauder Double Wear Light for semi-matte medium-coverage.

Colab Sheer & Invisible Dry Shampoo | £3.49

I was so up for there being a new affordable dry shampoo on the block, so I rushed out and picked up virtually every scent in Colab's original formula. I'm not denying the fragrances are lovely and so much more sophisticated than the ones Batiste do (for example), and the lack of white residue is a big pro. However I just don't feel like they work! Or rather, they do but only if you empty literally about half a large can into your hair the night before and sleep on it. It's not something I feel I can reach for if I just wake up in the morning any my hair is looking a little greasy. It does give some degree of volume but to be honest, if I want volume I'd rather use a texturising spray and get some real oomph. It also seems a little wasteful and ridiculous that you have to use so much of it for it to do anything. Overall I just much prefer Batiste, even with its white reside!

I've sort-of found a way to make this work for me, but to be honest when you're paying £20+ for a single cream eyeshadow, it really shouldn't take so much effort! This wears off and creases badly within just a couple of hours and not even my usual trusted primers help the situation. When I have cream eyeshadows from Maybelline and KIKO that cost me under £8 and don't do this, there's not much excuse for a premium product to wear poorly. It's such a shame as I loved the idea of this, had heard great things and Bette is a gorgeous colour in the pot. I've also never been let down by a Charlotte Tilbury product before. It works a little better when you apply a very thin layer and really take your time to blend it out, then go in again to build it up in the same way to get a nice wash of colour. But the reason I reach for a cream formula is to get the impact whilst saving some time so this process defeats the purpose. If you have oily eyelids, I'd proceed with caution, maybe go in if you're out shopping for the day and get the makeup artist at the counter to try it on your eyelids and wear it for the rest of the day  to see how it lasts. I think the formula of the Max Factor Excess Shimmers is very similar (though the wear-time of those isn't amazing either) and at under a tenner I'd suggest those instead!

At the end of the day, some products are really personal and not everyone's hair or skin are the same but this is my blog and I can't speak about anyone's experiences but my own! If you still really want to try any of these products then go for it, I just thought I'd share my thoughts so you can make an informed choice about what to spend your money on. I've included alternatives to all of the products here, so I hope that helps you too!

What are the most over-hyped beauty products you've tried?

  1. Such a great post, sometimes people can be scared to hate a product as you can be slated for it! I have a selection of my own products that everyone seems to love but just don't work for me! i'm also loving the new blog design and congrats on 20,000 followers!!

  2. I agree with you completely on the CT creams. I don't have oily eyelids nor do I have issues with any other creams, but these were just underwhelming. Creasy and faded. Shame, because the shades are gorgeous. Personally I really like the Oskia cleanser but hey, not everything is for everyone x

  6. Finally - someone who thinks the same as me about the Oskia, Hourglass powder, Collection concealer and the Charlotte Tilbury. I thought I was the only one who didn't 'get' it! I agree about the Beauty Blender - RT is just as good if not better as it is slightly stiffer. But I do disagree with the CoLab - I love that stuff! Great post :)

  10. Yes! You know i also hated the L'Oreal foundation it made me more oily and i found it not that full coverage! I haven't tried the Collection Concealer as i do love the Seventeen Stay Time one. I have the Bourjois foundation and find it looks ok but doesn't last well at all.

  11. This was such an informative post to read! It's nice to hear a different opinion than the same old 'omg this product is amazing' kinda thing.. I agree with you about the Collection concealer and I only bought it because of all the hype on YouTube. Another product that I think is a little over-rated is the Urban Decay Naked Weightless Concealer (or whatever it's called!) as it creases on me literally 20 seconds after I've applied it.. Maybe it's the way I'm applying it or I just have too much skin under my eyes haha, I'm not too sure but I'm not impressed with it! Great post :) xo

  12. I love these kinds of posts! I am in complete agreement with the Eyes to Mesmerise and felt like I was crap at life for not being able to make it work for me! I think the Collection is too drying for my under eyes, the same with NARS creamy concealer.

I love that you had reasons for each product not working for you rather than saying this product is rubbish. Fab post!

Thank God... Someone agrees with me about the Infallible foundation. I absolutely hate this foundation! I think it's really flat looking and just a bit lacklustre. Really like the new blog design :) There are some products that I actually really like, the L'Oreal foundation and Beauty Blender, and there are some that I don't like, the Collection concealer or Collab dry shampoo. But I also understand your view on Oskia cleansing gel, it's lovely and a nice way to treat yourself if you can but it's probably better to invest your money in serum or moisturiser. In terms of the Hourglass powders, I love them but the effect they give is so subtle that not everyone might appreciate, I don't use them as setting but finishing powders and they add something extra to my makeup that is hard to describe or see but it makes a difference :) x

This list has so many products I was looking forward to trying like the Colab spray, bourjois foundation, opal and collection concealer! :/ I had already heard how hourglass highlighters aren't really worth it. I felt the same about Mary-lou actually because importing to Pakistan makes most of these products already very expensive for us bearing in mind the currency is already devalued. The Hourglass Ambient Powder and Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector, both in the shades you have, in my humble opinion, are brilliant because they are so subtle and appear natural and enhancing on the skin. I don't wish to look like a disco ball, especially in the harshness of daylight, therefore, I love them for the reasons you think they are overhyped. The other item is the beauty blender, which to me, is a miracle worker. Anyhow, to each his/her own. I thank you for your honest opinions.

  56. Ooooh this was a really interesting post to read, I've just picked up the Oskia cleanser and so far, love it! I was going to pick up an Hourglass powder too, but I've heard a few times now they aren't worth the hyper or money!

  57. I won't bother trying the Collection concealer then haha! I've never tried the Bourjois foundation, I managed to grab the serum, no idea what the difference is though! My Beauty Blender is my godsend haha, but I do wear heavy cream/foundation bases so probably why! Shame about the CT cream shadow, it looks so pretty too!!! x

  58. I was so close to buying the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit but at nearly £70 it was ridiculously expensive and apparently terrible value for money...I can't help lusting after them though, especially the new strobing versions!xx

    1. I did see those but I'm scared about being disappointed again! And yeah the size of the pans made the Edit really bad vale but I guess if you're a newbie to Hourglass and want lots of choices you're better off doing that than buying the products individually xx

  59. So happy I'm not the only one that hates the Collection lasting perfection concealer! Everyone raves about it, but I just can't stand it. It's such a shame when products look so beautiful and get spoken about so much but then really aren't worth the money

  60. This just goes to show that different products work for different people, I mean when you think about it really it's pretty crazy that often we just expect something popular to work for us, when we all have such different skin etc. I know for me I love the beauty blender, it's a magic little sponge for me because for some reason it's the only thing that makes my foundation look good.

  61. Great post! I enjoyed reading it. I tried the over-hyped Glam Glow mask, and feel like everyone loves it. I also bought their cleanser. They both did nothing for me.

  62. I definitely find the collab dry shampoo and hourglass ambient lighting powders are overhyped. I definitely love the bourjois foundation though.

  64. I feel the same about the dry shampoo! It makes my hair hard to brush and just really rough and weird...

  65. I feel the same way about at least half of these products! Everyone was raving about the Colab Dry Shampoos so I went and purchased three bottles at once when it was having a promotion and I hated it from the very first time I tried it on my hair.. It left my hair feeling more oily than ever and looking more dry than ever! I'm definitely sticking to my trusty old Batiste! I've yet to decide whether or not I like my Beauty Blender because it doesn't seem to be THAT impressive a product. It's okay, but just not as amazing as what everyone has made it out to be! xx

  66. Totally agree with the Oskia, I bought it and it just isn't WOW enough to justify its price tag, but then I'm expecting amazing for that price! What I would say is I do wash my beauty blender on a high wash in the washing machine, removes all bugs and cleans it to new again, will make it last longer for you :) - but I agree, I prefer using a brush!

I really really try not to give into hypes, and when I do its through research, so I don't have many items that I dislike thankfully, and mostly when I do they are stupid impulse buys from the drugstore, which end up in the bin lol

  67. I didn't get along with the Collection concealer either! I tried it lots of times to see if I could grow to like it, but it actually made me hate it even more! I was also going to buy the L'oreal foundation but I think I will read a few more reviews before buying it as I feel like there are very mixed feelings about it.

  68. Fab post lovely, and loving your new header and layout ;) Opal has been on my wishlist for so long and think I like the sound of the poured version :) I used to really love the Colab Dry Shampoo but I always go back to my trusty batiste but really love the tinted formula :)

    1. Aw thank you lovely!
The tinted Batiste got black stuff all over my fingers! Though obviously I had the brunette one and you probably had the blonde so I guess that's the difference xx

  69. I love the RT sponge and was considering a beauty blender...don't think I'll bother now.
I've got to say, some of these products are my favourite (Bourjois Healthy Mix..) but I do agree that everyone is different. Thanks for giving some alternative (and often more affordable) suggestions!

  70. i really love the loreal foundation but the lightest colour is wayy too pink for my skin and the 2nd lightest colour is a perfect match for me when my skin is just a bit darker but right now i'm so pale so haven't been using it! xx

  71. I love the Oskia cleanser, and I feel in love with it all over again every time I use it. I use it on its own if I'm wearing very little makeup, or after makeup removal (often with a micellar water) otherwise. I don't like to use it in the morning for some reason though. I can see how if it doesn't wow you you feel it's overhyped though because it's a really expensive product! :) xx

  73. I'm also not a fan of the L'Oreal foundation. I could never find the right shade for my pale skin! Either its too pink, or to beige.

  74. I didn't even bother trying the loreal foundation when I couldn't find a good shade- I'll stick with my sheer glow foundation.
You don't like BB? *Sharpens pitchforks* jk I agree, they should be a bit cheaper.
I didn't colourpop ultra matte lip yet everyone raves about it on youtube.

    1. I do 'like' it but when people go so crazy about it I was expecting more. I'd say I 'like' most of these, I just think the hype is disproportionate xx

  75. My jaw slightly dropped when I read you didn't like the BB! I don't think I could live without mine now, it's such a staple product for me.
I'm definitely on the fence with Opal. I have it in the pressed form, and I feel like sometimes it can make my skin look dirty.

  76. I personally don't get the hype with Charlotte Tilbury's quads. I have the Vintage Vamp palette and I do like it and use it, but for the money I don't think they are anything special! The packaging is a bit underwhelming and plastic and if you want to splash out on eyeshadow Burberry's are so much better! I do however LOVE the Charlotte Tilbury Bronze and Glow. Total holy grail product.

    1. What a shame! I have the Dolce Vita and really love it, though the formula is more of a 'solid' MAC-like one as opposed to the smooth, creamy UD type I usually go for xx
