90s Nude Lip Picks

Thanks to Kylie Jenner, the 90s nude lip has been inescapable this past year. It's a look I really love as it's just so wearable and I think there's probably the perfect colour out there for everyone! There's two ways you can go with this: a dark brown nude or a more mauve-y look, so I've picked products for both at a range of price-points.

The first one I have to show you is the e.l.f. Studio Matte Lip Colour in Praline (£3.90). I'm absolutely gutted e.l.f. is to be discontinued in the UK but definitely try to grab this in the liquidation sale or if you live in a country that stocks the brand. I guess I'll be dropping by Beauty Joint to get my e.l.f. fix now! It's one of those products I really can't believe is so cheap as it's absolutely fantastic! It's so creamy to apply and I would actually say it's more like a satin finish than a true matte. The name is very accurate as it's a caramel-brown nude and I find it wears extremely well throughout the day.

Fairly similar, if you can't get your hands on the e.l.f., is Maybelline's Colour Drama Lip Pencil in Nude Perfection (£4.99). This has a slightly terracotta undertone and it's the perfect 'not-too-dark-not-too-light' shade that would suit a lot of fair and medium skin tones. Again, this is slightly sheen-y as opposed to matte. The wear time is decent but be careful of the transfer.

The MAC Lip Pencil in Whirl* (£12.50) is rumoured to be one of the shades Kylie Jenner uses. The thing I love about MAC Lip Pencils is that you can use them in so many ways: as a traditional liner, to fill your lips in entirely or you can fill in your lips with them then apply a lipstick on top. The creamy formula means you can apply this warm brown shade really easily but it lasts amazingly.

One of my all-time favourites is the MAC Matte Lipstick in Taupe (£15.50). It isn't at all drying but gives you a proper matte finish. It's similar to Nude Perfection in that it's brown with slightly orange undertones, but is much darker and has less sheen to it. I don't know why there's not more buzz surrounding this colour.

The MAC Satin Lipstick in Twig (£15.50) was one of my first MAC lipsticks so it holds a special place in my collection. It's still one I reach for time and time again for a mauve-nude look. It has a bit of a sheen to it, which makes it a little more forgiving than a matte finish (though not quite as long-wearing. It's a gorgeous dusky pink-mauve that goes perfectly with the (amazing) Essence Lip Liner in 06 Satin Mauve (£1), which I didn't include in this post as unfortunately I seem to have misplaced it! However if you want a more affordable way to rock the mauve version then that's the one.

Another MAC pick: the MAC Satin Lipstick in Faux* (£15.50). This is fairly similar to Twig but a little lighter and less plummy. If you want to rock a mauve nude but Twig looks a little intense or you have a fairer skin tone the try Faux instead. It's another Satin finish, so a little more creamy and moisturising than a matte.

So these are my top picks! I don't own the much talked-about Velvet Teddy, simply because it never seems to be in stock for me to have a look at in-store. However I hope you've found something you like the look of in this post. If you missed my post on Saturday, some of these shades were kindly sent to me by WAMO who are currently giving away £50 MAC vouchers. You can find out how to enter here.

  18. I really, really, really want to get my hands on Maybelline Color Drama pencils but I have yet to see them here. I'm not sure if it's yet to be launched in Canada or it's just my local drugstores that is not carrying it. Your swatches are one of the best I've seen, it's so clear and very helpful for me. Definitely will be picking up Mac Twig, that shade is stunning!
