Drugstore Starter Kit #3: Feeling Confident?

So, this is the final part of of my series, if you want to start from the beginning then check out part 1 here and part 2 here. Here we're going to tackle the more advanced beauty bits...

Primers are something it took me a while to appreciate the purpose of. I haven't come across a drugstore face primer that's been as amazing as my Smashbox one, but if you just want something to make your makeup last a bit longer and keep you shine-free I'd really recommend the Rimmel Stay Matte Primer (£5.99, review here).

Translucent Powders are something I still struggle with. You have to be very careful applying them so you don't make your face white. Sometimes in natural light it looks fine but under a flash it looks like you've splashed flour all over your face. I really like the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder (£3.99, review here), for a shine-free finish.

Countouring and Highlighting can be pretty daunting for a beginner, but the Sleek Face Form Kit (£9.99, review here) is a great place to start. I've tried other highlighting and contouring products but I still always come back to this (I have it in Medium). Use the bronzer for a sun-kissed look, the highlighter for the places where light naturally hits your face and the couture powder in the hollows of your cheeks, on your temples and across your jawline.

Liquid Blushers are also something you can graduate to once you're happy with creams and powders. I have one from e.l.f. and two from Makeup Revolution. I much prefer the Makeup Revolution Vivid Blush Lacquers (£3 each), which I have in Bloom (review here) and Heart, to the e.l.f. version as the colours are more natural and the quality is better. Squeeze a tiny amount on the back of your hand then use the e.l.f. small stippling brush from Part 2 to dot it onto your cheeks, gradually building up the colour.

Now you're doing more with your eye makeup, it may be worth looking into Eyeshadow Primer. I love the e.l.f. Eyelid Primer in Sheer (£1.95), you just dab a small amount onto your lids and blend it in. Your eyeshadow colours will really pop and they'll stay fresh and in place much longer.

If you want to graduate to a more Colourful Eyeshadow Palette, I'd really recommend the Sleek i-Divine Palettes (£7.99 each). I have both the Limited Edition Arabian Nights and the Garden of Eden palettes and they're the most colourful ones I own! The quality is really nice and the low cost means you can experiment.

I also really like Baked Eyeshadows. They can be used wet or dry and the pigmentation is insane if you use a damp brush, so be careful with them. The Makeup Revolution 5 Baked Eyeshadows (£2.50 each) are a great place to start. I have the two more neutral ones, Pure and Innocent and Chocolate Deluxe.

You might want to try a Brow Gel if you want your brows to look really groomed. I like the one that comes with the e.l.f. Wet Gloss Lash & Brow Clear Mascara (£1.95), it really holds everything in place and makes your brows look thicker.

A Bright Lipgloss is something you could want to try out at this point. I think the Makeup Revolution I Heart Makeup WOW Glosses (£2.49 each) are great for beginners as there are so many bold colours. They go on very pigmented and have a lacquer-like consistency. I have Double WOW and No Need To Panic.

To finish all this off, use a Setting Spray. I like the e.l.f. Studio Mist & Set Spray (£3.95), but it gives quite a dewy finish! I've heard good thinks about the Makeup Revolution Setting Spray too, so if you really don't want the dewiness you might want to check that one out. This will help to hold your makeup in place all day.

Finally, to apply everything you might want to pick up some Investment Brushes. I really love the Real Techniques brushes, the Body Shop also have some great ones. I have the Expert Face Brush for thicker foundations (£9.99) and the Stippling Brush (£11.99) for more liquid bases. They give such a flawless finish and  I can't wait to get my hands on some more Real Techniques!

So this concludes my Starter Kit mini-series :) Let me know what you thought of it in the comments
