Today we're talking about a brand I've been wanting to try for ages. I even bought my mum one of their fragrance mists for Christmas before I'd given their products a go myself (it received a positive review!) Phlur only came to the UK last year, but they're a cult fragrance brand in the US known for their fairly affordable but well-perfumed body mists in a range of delicious scents. They do also have proper eau de parfum products, which is what I'm here to review for you today... I had no idea what the Phlur Golden Rule Eau de Parfum* | £99 (50ml) | was claiming to be; sometimes when I receive fragrances, I prefer to just try them and see how I feel before looking up all of the specific notes and questioning if I smell them or now, and that's what I did with this scent. Now I've formulated my opinion based on my experience with the scent in its own right and comparing it to the fragrance notes and marketing, it's time for a review...
In terms of packaging, this has some weight to it and feels expensive but is pretty compact and travel-friendly at the same time. True to the name of the perfume; it has a gold metallic finish which is beautiful but admittedly does pick up some fingerprints! It claims to be 'bold, confident and sensual' as well as 'profoundly luxurious' and 'powerfully feminine'. My first impressions of the scent were that it seems like a modern twist on a very classic feminine floral fragrance. At the same time, it didn't smell overly floral; it's well-balanced with other elements that I really enjoy.
The top notes are mandarin and pink pepper, we have a heart of coconut milk and vanilla cream and base notes of jasmine and orange flower. This combination comes together as soft floral (but not powdery or dated at all), there's the slight spiciness of pink pepper to balance things out and make a more sultry final product. Then the coconut and vanilla do come through and give this a softer, milkier counterbalance which blends really nicely with the jasmine. Then we have the gentler, less obvious orange flower for a fruiter kind of floral note. This all comes together as something I'd describe as a 'grown up' scent; essentially, the sort of fragrance you'd never be into as a teenager but grow to enjoy over the years and that you'd associate with stylish women in their 30s!
Personally, I really enjoy this scent. It's not something I'd typically gravitate towards, and I do appreciate that it's not reinventing anything and there are other scents on the market that are similar, but I like this one! Whilst this is a take on the classic quintessential more-sophisticated feminine scent, I find it a lot softer and more well-rounded than many similar fragrances. Sometimes I find the floral notes too sharp or combining florals with more obvious spicy notes makes something that's a bit overbearing for me. This fragrance doesn't have any of those issues; it's pretty much perfectly calibrated, to me. I was also very impressed with the staying power of this on my skin. As an eau de parfum, it has a strong scent once applied and when it settles on the skin, but it also stays. I can smell it prominently for hours after use, and even when I get home at the end of a long day, it lingers pleasantly on the skin. It's not game-changing but it's a great example of a scent in this particular niche.
Have you tried any of Phlur's scents before?
