GOLD EYES, BERRY LIPS

Is there a more reliably-great combination for Autumn / Winter makeup looks than a gold eye paired with a berry lip? I don't think so! These are the products I love using to create this festive season classic...

I gravitate towards warm-toned eyeshadows all year round, but I love a glitzy or metallic finish for more of a festive makeup look. The Victoria Beckham Beauty Lid Lustre in Honey | £33 | truly makes glitter wearable and low-maintenance! This is a one-swipe creamy eyeshadow that has a glittery texture with zero fallout. It looks sparkly on the lids but doesn't flake, crease or budge even after hours of wear. I can apply this with my fingers in under a minute and this warm gold tone is perfect to go with festive makeup looks, so you can probably see why it's a favourite of mine as we head into the season. If you love the look or idea of a glitzy shadow but don't want faff, mess or giant chunks of glitter under your eyes; this is for you.

When I want something a little more lowkey and dewy-metallic, I go for the Laura Mercier Caviar Eye Colour Stick in Copper | £28. This is a creamy, glide-on stick formula with an opaque, luminous and dimensional look on the lids. It has this almost wet-look metallic finish without a glossy or sticky texture. You get a little bit of play time before this sets down and it has wonderful longevity when it does. Sure, it will start to crease a little if you wear it for 10+ hours without a primer, but just adding that step in ensures this stays perfect for as long as your day (or night) needs it to. This is my easy go-to warm light metallic gold colour and I wear it all year round, day and night. However, it particularly pops when paired with a berry-toned lip.

I also love the Nudestix Magnetic Luminous Eye Colour in Copper Foil | £21 | for a bit more of an ambered-orange gold look (this pairs really beautifully with a pink-toned berry lip. This isn't quite as creamy and gliding as the Laura Mercier but it still has a nicely opaque finish and a metallic finish (though it's not as wet-look and has more of a burnished quality to it). It sets down after a few seconds (I swipe it on and quickly blend out the edges with my fingers) and has really good longevity once it does.

Onto the lip picks, let's start with the low-maintenance autumn / winter lip that's perfect for weekdays or if your lips are feeling a little dry and sore and you want to take care of them whilst looking put-together. My pick in this (admittedly rather specific) category is the Clarins Comfort Lip Oil in Chocolate | £25. This is a glossy, nourishing, non-sticky lip oil that gives a wash of dark warm red-purple-brown colour. I use it alone, or it can be applied over the top of a more traditional matte berry lip to make it glossy.

If you want something that's similar but is more of a cool-toned black cherry colour then try the Clinique Pop Lip + Cheek Oil in Black Honey | £23.50. Again, this is a really moisturising lip oil formula that's great if you just can't bring yourself to go with an ultra-matte finish for your autumn-winter makeup looks every single day (though of course these kinds of formulas look gorgeous and bold for a special occasion). This can also be used on the cheeks, though I personally don't find it bold or long-wearing enough for that. To me, it's a sheer, dimensional lip oil that isn't thick or overly glossy and makes a striking blue-purple toned berry lip really wearable.

Finally, we have a matte option. Matte liquid lipsticks really aren't on trend these days, but there's one formula that I think really has stood the test of time since the heyday of these types of products. The Huda Beauty Liquid Matte in Icon | £22 | has such a lovely formula; it offers a soft matte finish that doesn't emphasise lines on the lips or suck the life and moisture out of them! It has that opacity and has good longevity but it's a little more forgiving and moisturising. Sure, that means it will eventually wear off as you eat and drink your way through the night, but it wears off evenly and doesn't look patchy or messy. It's a small price to pay for a comfortable formula! The colour Icon is a medium pink-toned berry that really lifts the complexion and doesn't look too moody or dramatic. I find it easy to apply without mess, fuss or even that much precision, which makes it a winner in my books.

What are your favourite gold eyeshadows and berry lip colours?
