Today we're talking streamlined skincare, which I think is the realistic way to go for everyday life. Skincare results come from consistency, so if you don't have a routine you can stick to, you're really doing yourself a disservice! This is how I recommend streamlining your routine down to a few steps you can commit to every day without compromising on amazing results...

The first thing I recommend if you want to simplify your skincare routine is to find a moisturiser that you enjoy for both AM and PM; as someone who travels a lot, these kinds of formulas are a must for me, because it removes a decision point and it means I can pack light. Although there's definitely an argument for different moisturisers for AM and PM (especially during the very hot months and very cold months), it's definitely not essential. Whilst some day creams will include ingredients like Vitamin C that work best in the day, and some night creams will include retinoids (which aren't photostable); it's mostly marketing. If you like the texture and the ingredients are giving your skin what it needs: take the guesswork out of your routine and just have the one moisturiser. In terms of what I look for in my combined AM / PM moisturisers, I usually go for something that doesn't contain strong actives, so I can customise that element using my serum. The next thing I consider is texture and ingredients; generally I want something that's nourishing for my dry skin doesn't felt heavy or greasy. And I want a product that contains skin barrier boosters and hydrators such as squalane, ceramides and hyaluronic acid.

Toners honestly aren't an essential so feel free to skip them altogether, but if you already enjoy the hydration of a toner but want a quick way to exfoliate the skin or just give it a little something extra: toners are a great way of doing so. Honestly, most of the time I'm not even using a cotton wool pad, I'm just quickly splashing or spreading a toner onto my skin using my hands! Toners can contain serum-like ingredients such as niacinamide, peptides and Vitamin C alongside plenty of hydration, but I have to admit the main way I enjoy toners with added extras would be in the form of an exfoliating toner. I use them around 3 times a week as part of my evening skincare routine to maintain skin smoothness, keep dryness at bay and just give my complexion an overall glow boost. It's so quick and easy compared to having to do a full-on peel and I honestly find I can stay on top of my skin only using exfoliating toners.

This is probably the single best thing you can do on my entire list! It's so easy to get bogged down in mixing and matching all of these different single-ingredient active serums, but you really don't need to do that in order to have a great skincare routine. Instead, I recommend switching to a concern-focused serum regimen. This means choosing multi-active serums that target specific concerns. For example, a Vitamin C + niacinamide serum geared towards brightening the skin or a peptide + retinoid serum for well-ageing. You don't need every single individual ingredient on the market; all you need is a few key actives that address your skin concerns and you can do that with just one multi-active serum for the AM and one for the PM.

This is a pretty straightforward one to save you money and effort! Almost all moisturisers these days contain a variety of humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, alongside a load of other good stuff that's going to help retain that moisture within your skin. So - although there are hydrating serums I enjoy - there are very few I think truly add something that a good moisturiser couldn't. So, if you want more time or less fuss in your life; ditch the standalone hydrators and simply infuse hydration into other steps of your routine (such as via moisturisers or more active serums). It's pretty much no effort because you're probably already doing it! Go and check the INCI list of your go-to moisturiser and I can almost guarantee it contains hyaluronic acid, so there's no need to go out and buy a serum that contains this ingredient (I know serums are generally considered more concentrated, but in this instance, I do find them to be a little pointless!)

Almost any moisturiser on the market!

Finally, another tip I kind of picked up from travelling a lot and not wanting to have a bunch of products in my wash bag whilst I'm away is to find cleansers that perform more than one function. For example; it works as a morning and second cleanse, or it's primarily a morning cleanse but can remove makeup when paired with a damp cloth when you need it to. Personally I like a cleanser that works as a morning cleanse but also as a one-step in the evening when I'm just wearing sunscreen, because if it's not waterproof and I don't have makeup on; a double cleanse just feels like overkill!
