When Skincare Meets Makeup

I've always felt that if you get your skincare right then your makeup will (almost!) take care of itself, so I love products that do a bit of both. It also makes my morning routine that bit quicker and easier! I've had a rifle through my collection and picked out my favourite skincare-makeup hybrids right now.

REN Perfect Canvas* | £50 | It's not often that a genuinely innovative product comes out and completely wows the beauty world, however this is that exception (and is the inspiration for resurrecting this post idea). It's essentially a primer-serum hybrid to be used after your moisturiser that's packed full of amazing ingredients and is specially-formulated to give your skin a boost and allow for flawless makeup application. It has a very lightweight texture and doesn't contain silicone but it honestly makes such a difference to my skin! I was challenged to use the product consistently for 14 days  to see how it changed my makeup's appearance and I was so impressed. It smooths out the skin, making my pores less visible (without the need for a balm, which is what I usually have to use in addition to my primer) and smoothing out any fine lines so makeup doesn't settle and look unflattering. It also just makes my skin look smoother and fresher, so it's at its best. It has a sort of satin finish - it doesn't give any dewiness, however it isn't purposefully matte either. This is a pricey investment, however if I can replace a serum, a primer and a pore balm with one simple product then it's one I can justify making!
Ingredients include: algae extract, lactic acid, probiotics

Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre* | £13 (30ml) | This is a great multi-tasker because it can be used as a moisturiser, a primer or as an all-in-one. The consistency of this is really unusual - it's sort of rich but lightweight at the same time (it isn't heavy or suffocating on my combination skin at all). It helps to calm sensitivity and redness and just has this amazing replenishing effect when my skin is looking and feeling a bit tired and lacklustre. I always love how my base makeup looks when I use this product and I just couldn't imagine my beauty kit without it any more.
Ingredients include: vitamins, fatty acids

First Aid Beauty Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturiser | £20.50 | When I want that really fresh, dewy skin look then this is the product I reach for. It's a hydrating (but not too rich or greasy) moisturiser-primer hybrid. I love it because it takes care of any dry patches, so even a matte foundation applied on top of it doesn't look patchy or uneven. It also really helps a matte foundation look a bit fresher when your skin is dull but you still want the benefits of the formula's longevity. It has a very slight tint to it as well, which I find helps even out the tone of my skin.
Ingredients include: coconut water, zinc, copper

Glossier Priming Moisturiser | £18 | This is definitely the all-in-one product best suited to normal and combination skin types, as it's the lightest of the priming moisturisers in this post (it may not be enough on its own for dry skin, however they do have a Rich version as well). What I like about this is that as well as softening, plumping and lightly moisturising the skin, it has this unusual (but good!) sort of 'stick' to it, which really helps my base apply evenly and last that bit longer. It's a very gentle product that I think will work for a lot of skin types.
Ingredients include: hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, honey

Too Faced Hangover Primer | £27 | This primer saw me through so many dry skin days last summer! It has a cream texture but it's very light, so for very dry skin types I'd still advise using a moisturiser or hydrating serum, however it'll be enough on its own for most people. It isn't super intensive or anything, it just calms the skin, hydrates and gets rid of any dry patches. My skin looks and feels much healthier on its dull and lacklustre days when I use this product - the name is spot-on because it's the perfect primer for when you wake up looking a bit worse for wear! Anything I put on over it looks instantly fresher and healthier, even if it's a matte base.
Ingredients include: coconut water, probiotics

MAC Strobe Cream in Goldlite | £25 | I love this product because there are several ways to use it: as a primer, a moisturiser or mixed in with your foundation for added luminosity. It's a light, almost whipped, lotion that will be moisturising enough for all but dry skin types in itself, however what really makes it special is that it contains a sheen. It isn't glitter and it isn't obviously detectable; it's just a really subtle shift (in this case, a yellow-toned oyster gold). The iridescent quality not only makes the skin look radiant, but it just gives a slightly dewier, healthier look that's immediately noticeable but you'd never look in the mirror and think it's because you've got a tinted shimmer on your skin.
Ingredients include: botanicals, antioxidants

Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturier (St. Moritz) | £30 | This is one of my favourite everyday base products, especially during the winter months because it's so hydrating and gives my skin a radiant look without being overly shiny and it still lasts really well on my skin. It's light coverage but evens out the tone of my skin in a really natural way. If you're looking for 'your skin but better' in a tube, then this is pretty much it! I love how glowing, perfected and hydrated my skin is when I use this.
Ingredients include: vitamins A and E, antioxidants

Cover FX Mattifying Anti-Blemish BB Gel* (G Medium-Deep) | £35 | I'm really confused about the status of this product - I saw it in Harvey Nichols the other day, yet it only seems to be available in the US online... Either way, this is an amazing summer base for oily and spot-prone skin. It's light coverage but enough to even out the tone of my skin without smothering it. The longevity it has is amazing - it's one of the few products that stays in place even in the heat. Despite the matte finish it doesn't look drying on the skin at all and I love that this doesn't leave me spotty in hot weather (which often happens to me).
Ingredients include: clay, salicylic acid

Caudalie Beauty Elixir* | £30 | This can be used as a toner, an aromatherapy product or it's also a great pick-me-up for lacklustre skin and makeup during the day. When it's 5pm and things are looking a little tired and caky, this fine mist refreshes the skin. It just gives a fresh, soft-focus look that instantly makes my skin look healthier.
Ingredients include: grape, rose, mint

Lancome Juicy Shaker in Vanilla Pop | £19.50 | This is quite an unusual product because it's actually pretty pigmented and despite the glossy finish, it has a lightweight texture. It's essentially a tinted lip oil that's hydrating but also adds dimension and colour to the lips. This is a reddish berry colour with a warm undertone.
Ingredients include: sweet almond oil, cranberry oil, omega 3

Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Comfort Oil in Red Berry* | £19 | This is a nourishing lip oil that, whilst it has a thick texture, isn't at all sticky to wear. It adds a gloss to the lips and absorbs to give lasting moisture, as well as adding a hint of colour. Red Berry is a sheer, warm reddish tone that still looks very natural on the lips.
Ingredients include: raspberry, jojoba, achiote

Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatments in Honey & Petal | £19.50 each | I love this creamy, moisturising lip balm formula - it's just so nice and nourishing, as well as containing SP15. As well as being amazing lip balms, these give a surprisingly pigmented wash of glossy colour to the lips that's perfect for a low-maintenance makeup look. Honey is a warm brown-nude, whereas Petal has a more pinky tone to it.

Ingredients include: grape seed oil, sugar
