My MAC Lipstick Collection

I really wasn't sure if an updated MAC lipstick post would be a blogger cliche or a blogger classic, however I asked on Twitter and you guys overwhelmingly said you did want to see it! I've done this roughly in colour groups and swatched them side-by-side, so you can see the subtle differences in tone between the shades in my collection. Let's get into it!

MAC Lipsticks now cost £16.50 for the classic version, as the price just keeps creeping up! They're available in a variety of finishes, and whilst I haven't tried every single one, my favourites are definitely Lustre (sheer with a slightly glossy sheen), Satin (creamy and pigmented) and Matte.

Lighter nudes

Syrup (Lustre)
This is one of those shades that's so easy to wear! I used to reach for it a lot but haven't in a while, so I'm definitely going to pop it into my everyday makeup drawer now. It's an interesting pinky mauve colour that's warm enough not to wash me out. It's sheer but has a nice amount of pigment, though obviously isn't the most long-lasting.

Jubilee (Lustre)
This is one of my everyday go-tos and is one of the only traditional lipsticks that I've almost completely finished! It's very similar in formulation to Syrup and is just a nice sheer, sheeny lip colour in a warm brown nude.

Velvet Teddy (Matte)
This is one of those super hyped-up shades and, whilst it's one I really like, I do think there are better nudes for me personally in MAC's range. I tend to find the nude mattes from MAC to be creamy and comfortable, despite giving a true matte finish that lasts for hours. This is a mid-light brown with pinky-taupe undertones that has just enough warmth that it doesn't wash me out, though personally I love to pair it with the more red-toned Spice lip pencil.

Strip Me Down (Matte)
This has a very similar texture and formula to Velvet Teddy but for me personally, I find the warmer beige tone of it to suit me better. This is pretty much a perfect 'my lips but better' shade on me and I wear it so much, whether paired with a brown smoky eye in the evening or on a work day. It just always seems to do the trick!

Mid-tones

Fanfare (Cremesheen)
This is MAC's creamy, sheeny (but still very pigmented) formula. Although the shine tends to wear off within a couple of hours, I find that it still leaves behind a nice stain of colour. They're very comfortable to wear and this is my go-to shade for Spring; a muted pinky-nude that's deep enough to suit my skin tone.

Creme in Your Coffee (Cremesheen)
This is one of those shades I know I should get more use out of but for whatever reason, I rarely seem to reach for it. There's nothing wrong with it as such; it's just not really much of anything! It's a kind of warm plummy brown-mauve nude that just doesn't look that special on my skin tone.

Smoked Almond (Liptensity)
This lipstick range is slightly different to the main collection and costs £1 more. It's a lovely, super-pigmented formula with a creamy, comfortable texture. It definitely has less of a sheen and is more opaque than the Cremesheen and I find it nice and long-lasting. This is a warm, almost bright, pinky-brown tone.

Faux* (Satin)
This light mauve-pink isn't something I can wear on its own because it does have a tendency to wash me out (that's just on my skin tone though). However, it's really lovely paired with the deeper, plummier Soar lip pencil. It comes in the creamy, pigmented Satin formula that's kind of like a matte but with a slight sheen and is just a bit more comfortable to wear.

Rosy hues

Twig (Satin)
This was only my second-ever MAC lipstick and, though I don't use it as much as I once did, it's been a firm favourite for a very long time. It has the same sort of formula as Faux, though as it's a deeper plummier mauve tone, it does transfer a little (though it still wears well, leaving a nice stain on the lips even after the sheen is gone).

Mocha (Satin)
It's another Satin finish, and a much more recent addition to my stash. I don't know how I'd never picked this up before - it's a sort of warm pink nude with slightly salmon undertones. It's definitely brighter than your usual neutral lipstick but is still very everyday-appropriate.

Mehr (Matte)
This has a true matte finish but still glides on and feels creamy and comfortable on my lips. It has the longevity without feeling drying. This is one of my favourite day-to-night lip shades and it's a colour that works with so many makeup looks. It's a sort of dusky pink with slightly cool undertones that suits a lot of different skin tones. It's definitely one of my must-have MAC shades.

Taupe (Matte)
I feel like this shade does for me what Velvet Teddy seems to do for others! It's just a gorgeous 90s warm-toned brown nude shade. It's one of my go-to lipsticks for that kind of look out of my entire makeup collection. It just looks cool but sophisticated at the same time. It's again very comfortable to wear and has amazing pigmentation.

Finally Free (Cremesheen)
I don't use this nearly as much as I should do! This is the shade designed by Caitlyn Jenner and it's pretty universal. It's a warm plum-mauve with a creamy, semi-sheer finish. It's a perfect 'in between' shade when you want something noticeable but don't want to go for a bright colour. I will be making a point to wear this a lot more for Autumn/Winter this year!

Brights

Passion Charge (Lustre)
This was a limited edition shade I got in a set, so I don't believe it's available any more. I might pass it on to my mum as it's definitely something she'd like and I don't get the use out of it! It's a sheer, bright orange-coral tone in a Lustre finish, meaning that you just get a nice, easy wash of the colour.

Viva Glam Miley (Amplified)
The Amplified finish is generally both bright and glossy, so can get a bit messy! This is from the Viva Glam range meaning that all of the cost of the lipstick goes to supporting HIV/AIDS charities, which is pretty amazing. This doesn't get a lot of wear but I still kind of love it! It's a vibrant hot pink shade that I like for brightening up a classic outfit like black skinny jeans and a striped top.

Tropic Tonic (Matte)
This isn't quite as smooth and creamy as the more nude tones in my collection, however the formula isn't overly drying. This is a bit different for me but I really enjoy wearing this during the summer as a pop of colour. It's a sort of vibrant coral that has both hints of pink and orange in it.

Plumful (Lustre)
I often go for this shade during the winter when I want something that's slightly berry-toned but is still wearable during the day. It's a red-berry colour with a vibrant undertone. Whilst not the most long-wearing, the sheer formula means it's comfortable and also very easy to reapply.

Berry and deeper tones

Chili (Matte)
This is a lovely colour, even if the formula is a tad drying (though I can work with it). It's a sort of muted red with slightly terracotta undertones. It's one of the few proper red lipsticks that works for my skin tone and is one of my favourites for the evening, especially in winter. It was actually my first MAC lipstick but I lost it on a night out! Luckily it's since been replaced.

Party Line (Cremesheen)
I definitely need to wear this more as it's the perfect 'not quite berry' lip colour for when you want something a little more evening-appropriate without going for a full-on bold matte lip. It's very comfortable and is nice and pigmented with a bit of a sheen. If you like the look of Diva but want something slightly more subdued then try this.

Dubonnet (Amplified)
Like with Viva Glam Miley, this can definitely transfer and isn't as long-wearing as a matte, however I'm so in love with this colour that I just wear it anyway! It's perfect for a winter party makeup look as it's a deep, almost blood-like red - the sort of colour I'd imagine the apple in Snow White to be or Dorothy's shoes... What I think really makes this shade unique is that it doesn't have a purple undertone.

Diva (Matte)
This is of course a classic MAC lipstick shade. I do find it slightly drying and it can 'skip' on the lips, so I have to really moisturise and exfoliate before wearing it. It's a deep purple-red berry tone that's great for a night out and suits so many people.

Paramount (Satin)
I really loved this shade when I first got it but I do think I've probably grown out of it. It's a deep brown tone that's neither cool nor overly warm in its undertone. As it's a Satin finish as opposed to Matte, it can definitely transfer, though it still has decent wear-time.

  1. Ah I love all of these shades! I bought my first MAC lipstick some months ago in the shade Honeylove and I totally regret it because it's not a good color for me, washes me out a bit.. that's why isn't good to buy lipsticks online, but I didn't had another option.

  18. So I only kept 4 of mine and you have 3 of them here. (Try Spirit...its amazing!) I really love the look of Smoked Almond and would love to try that next just to try a new line. I can't believe they're increasing the prices on the regular lipsticks...cheeky! Also, you're so right. If you have Taupe, you don't need Velvet Teddy on a medium skintone xxx

  24. Chili is such a gorgeous colour, I'd never seen it before! You have a beautiful collection and all the shades are super pretty and wearable. I've never tried the Lustre finish since I prefer more pigmented lipsticks in general, but I might give it a go since you enjoy it so much!
