The Double Cleanse

Double cleansing seems to have taken the beauty world by storm! At first, I must admit I was slightly bemused; surely cleansing your skin after removing makeup is a no-brainer? However that would be losing sight of the fact that a lot of people have a much simpler routine than myself (as a blogger), plus I do think there's an art to picking the products that perfectly compliment each other. I tend to use something oil based, massaged into my skin to lift up even the most stubborn black eye makeup. I then remove it with a damp muslin cloth and use a skin cleanser to wash away any lingering impurities from the day. These are the pairings that work for me...

Pestle and Mortar Erase & Renew Double Cleansing System* | £72 | This beautifully-boxed monochrome collection contains everything you need to take you from fully made-up, straight from work, to completely cleansed and fresh-faced. The Erase Cleansing Balm is an oil-based semi-solid balm containing grape seed oils and pumpkin enzymes. All you have to do is warm it slightly between your fingers and massage it directly onto your skin (ensure you close your eyes and rub it over your lashes) - it has a slightly grainy texture which also exfoliates. When you're sure you've loosened all of the makeup, dampen the cloth (which comes with the set) and you'll find your entire face wipes straight off! This doesn't sting my eyes or leave behind any greasy residue, so gets a big thumbs up from me.
The Renew Gel Cleanser is one of my favourite recent skincare discoveries. I love that the packaging has one of those pumps where the product comes up through the centre, as it means I never end up dispensing too much. Although it's a gel formula, it doesn't foam up and won't strip or dry out your skin. The ingredients include various fruit enzymes to ensure my skin looks glowing and fresh. It also leaves my skin feeling completely clean without sucking all the hydration out and so soft. If your skin tends to look dull, dry or lifeless then this is the double cleansing routine for you!

Pixi + Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse | £24 | This is one of the products that started the current trend off! The tub is split into two sections, one containing a solid oil-based cleanser (not unlike the Pestle and Mortar one) and the other a lightweight cream cleanser. This one doesn't come with a muslin cloth but I do think the price-point is very affordable. The solid cleanser contains various fruit oils but doesn't really have a fragrance. I really like its simplicity; it isn't greasy, it doesn't sting my eyes and is very easy to remove with my damp cloth. This is great at getting off any stubborn makeup and there isn't any fragrance in it that would irritate sensitive skin.
The other side is a very lightweight, almost lotion-like cream cleanser. It's nothing thick or heavy. I go in with it once my makeup is removed and again, there are no irritating perfumes in the formula. I just massage it into my skin and rinse for soft, smooth and hydrated skin. Again, it's just a very simple, non-irritating formula that I think will work for a lot of different skin types.

Skin Laundry Nourishing Cleansing Oil* | £26 + Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser | $18 | This is a duo I've paired together myself which I think is perfect for when you're in a rush! Don't be scared by the word 'nourishing' or the fact that this is a proper cleansing oil, when it comes to the Skin Laundry, because although it softens the skin it isn't at all greasy or heavy (it contains great ingredients, including tea tree oil and jojoba oil). It's a nice, lightweight formula that should be massaged over your makeup. Again, all you need is a damp cloth to wipe away your makeup in its entirety. It has a very mild, clean laundry-like scent but it's nothing irritating, even on my sensitive eyes and it lifts even the most stubborn waterproof formulas. It comes in a pump packaging which makes it so quick and easy to dispense, but you'll have to supply your own cloth.
I then go in with the Glossier cleanser, which again comes in a basic, functional bottle. This is a very simple, fragrance-free formula. Although it may not be nourishing enough for dry skin, it's a product that I can see really working on sensitive skin. The texture is exactly as the name would suggest; it stays in a clear gel-like formula throughout application and rinses off easily.

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser | £14.50 | + REN ClearCalm 3 Clarifying Clay Cleanser | £19 | Cleanse and Polish barely needs an introduction! It's a cream-based hot cloth cleanser that can be purchased with or without the 'cloth' part (though I'd definitely recommend using one with it). It comes in a handy pump packaging. I don't find it *quite* as effective on that black waterproof eye makeup as something oil-based, however it definitely works on the majority of my makeup. Whilst oil cleansers won't do you any harm, I understand a lot of people with spot-prone skin can be scared to use them, in which case this gentle, fragrance-free, lightweight cream is perfect (it does still contain oils but the texture itself isn't 'oily').
For spot-prone skin types, I recommend following it up with this fantastic liquid-clay cleanser from REN. It's amazing at keeping my skin clear but also making it soft. It doesn't foam or strip the skin at all but works so well at removing excess oils and any lingering dirt on the skin (making it great for in the morning too).

  2. Same! I always thought double cleansing was a no-brainer, before it became "double cleansing"! I definitely prefer oil cleansers over everything else.

  3. I think I could definitely get on board with this whole double cleansing. As I have such dry and sensitive skin, I always find that it's really difficult to ensure that all your makeup is off! Desperate to try the Pixi one! xx

  5. You've listed some really amazing products here, Jasmine! I have been doing double cleanse since forever and I often forgot that most people have a much simpler routine than mine too. Whenever I explain in details my routine, my customers usually looked at me somewhat bewildered. LOL!

  6. I like the idea of the pixi double cleanse being divided into the oil and the cream cleanser!
I used to use a cream cleanser but now I use a gel.
I double cleanse by washing my makeup off with sorbelene, then cleansing twice with the same product!

  9. I've been double cleansing for a few years now and I think it was one of the best thing I could do to my skin, next to acid peels. I always remove my makeup with cleansing oil as I find them the most effective and then follow with cleansing balm or cream to cleanse and nourish the skin :)
I have finally tried the Liz Earle Hot Cloth Cleanser and I'm really enjoying it! x

  10. Everyone is so taken with the Glossier Milk Jelly cleanser. I can't wait for Glossier to set up here!

Double cleansing is something I'm so lazy with. I got used to the Oskia cleanser being so good, but a second cleanse will always be good addition.

I still haven't tried the Pixi x Caroline Hirons cleanser though, a huge oversight.

  13. I really want to try out the Pixi Double Cleanse out, it sounds lovely and everything i've tried out from Pixi so far I've liked. I really like the sound of the Skin Laundry Nourishing Oil as I really don't like cleansers that leave that greasy feeling after you've used it

  14. Really glad to hear your opinions on the Caroline Hirons and Pixi double cleanse - I've been wanting to pick that up, however, a couple of people told me it felt too greasy and gunked up the pores, but hearing from you, I'm having second thoughts! xx Excited to try some Glossier products in the near future - they're looking stunning! x
