Affordable Makeup | The Under £20 Edit

Today we're talking affordable makeup! I've made this 'under £20' so I could include a varied range of products and not just the typical drugstore brands. But also we're going for things that are good for their price - so £15 eyeshadow palettes, not £15 brow pencils... It'll essentially be a mix of mid-range and super-budget products that I'll cover off all in one go!

Face & Base

Blank Canvas Rose Gold Makeup Brushes* | £12.96 each | I'm not quite sure why this brand doesn't have more hype? They do fantastic-quality brushes at affordable prices that come in a range of pretty finishes. Here I have the F39 Dome Powder Brush, F43 Flat Round Multi Face Brush, F20 Buffer Brush and F31 Targeted Contour Brush. They all have incredibly soft bristles that wash easily with zero shedding. The F39 is great for face powder but can also be used for even, flawless blusher and bronzer application. The M43 can be used for foundation or for cream bronzer. The F20 is great if you want a really airbrushed finish with a full-coverage foundation. Finally, the F31 does what it says on the tin; whether for cream or powder it gives a sharp, defined contour.

The Ordinary High-Adherence Silicone Primer* | £4 | The word 'silicone' used to make my toes curl when it came to primers, however this one is amazing! It has a cream formula that isn't hydrating or mattifying in finish but glides smoothly onto the skin. It makes pores look less visible and ensures my base lasts all day long with minimal shine.

L'Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation (106 Sun Beige) | £13.99 | I'm so glad I got my hands on the US version of this foundation, even if it does cost me quite a bit more than the one you can grab in Boots and Superdrug. Firstly, the shade range is so much more inclusive and in 104 and 106 I pretty much have my perfect matches (depending on the time of year). The foundation itself gives me everything I want: a semi-matte finish that's not flat or drying and a flawless medium-full coverage that's incredibly long-lasting. It isn't too much to wear during the day but also works amazingly well for an evening look. My only negative really is that it sets down quite quickly so you can't let it sit on the face for too long before blending out.

LA Girl Pro Conceal HD Concealers (Medium Beige & Pure Beige) | £5 each | Ok, I have to own up that the formula of these concealers isn't my all-time favourite but for a fiver, you aren't going to get a more diverse range of colours. They aren't bad by any stretch, I think I just have ones I prefer. They come in a tube but have this unusual brush applicator which the product comes up through (with quite a bit of effort). To me they give a medium coverage that has to be built up quite a bit, however I don't find that they look caky when you use more product. The formula doesn't crease in my experience and is quite long-lasting.

Milani Strobe Light Instant Glow Powder in Day Glow | £13 | This is definitely 'up there' for a drugstore highlighter but in my opinion it's comparable the formulas by the Balm, Anastasia Beverly Hills and Laura Geller. This is a light, soft gold shade that's perfect for my skin tone, though there is a vast range of colours to suit everyone. The formula is very soft and gives that natural sheeny finish as opposed to being glittery or heavy.

L'Oreal L'Or Highlighter | £6.99 | I have a feeling this limited edition beaut is on its way out as I struggled to find an online link for it! The formula reminds me so much of those that ColourPop do; it's a sort of mousse-cream hybrid. It gives a gorgeous, dewy glow to the skin without being greasy. The shade itself is a very warm, true gold.

Makeup Revolution Vivid Baked Bronzer in Golden Days | £4 | This is a really underrated gem that will set you back less than a fiver! It's a very natural bronzer that has a gorgeous sheen, though it isn't anything too shimmery. The golden-bronze shade is perfect for adding natural warmth and glow to the skin. These will also work as highlighters on deeper skin tones.

Sleek Face Form Contour Kit (Medium) | £9.99 | This is an old classic that is still worth a mention here, because as far as affordable contouring goes; this product is yet to be bettered, I think! The shades are very pigmented so I tend to reach for this ahead of a night out (I'm more of a bronzer girl on work days) however they're smooth and blend out nicely. The contour shade is natural and cool without being grey or ashy. The golden shimmery highlight is stunning, especially for a sun kissed summer makeup look. I don't tend to reach for the shimmery orange-toned bronzer though and wish they'd included a blusher like they did with the two lighter shades instead!

NYX Sweet Cheeks Blush Palette | £17 | This is a pretty new addition and fairly 'up there' in price for a drugstore palette, but as a huge fan of their HD blushes I really wanted to give it a go. It also looks like it could be a good dupe for the Nars blush palette. You get two shimmers (which to me are more like 'blusher toppers' or something I'd mix in with a matte shade) and the rest are mattes. Overall, I really love the quality; the powders are smooth, pigmented and long-lasting. Colour-wise, I only don't use the very cool pink tone, however overall there are some lovely nude, berry and pink colours making it versatile and perfect for travelling with.

Eyes

Zoeva Naturally Yours Eyeshadow Palette | £18 | review | This is also up at the top end of the products I've included in this post but it beats many palettes I've paid upwards of £30 for! It looks at a glance like a standard soft nude eyeshadow palette but it really isn't! It contains some amazing duo-chrome shades and has a great mix of shimmers and mattes. The Zoeva palettes are amazing in quality - every single shade is smooth, pigmented and blends like a dream, as well as lasting on my oily lids. These shades are my everyday favourites at the moment because they go with just about any workday makeup look I create.

Inglot Aquastic Cream Eyeshadows in 12 and 15* | £13 each | These are due to be featured in my next New in Beauty post but I couldn't resist mentioning them here too. Admittedly these are more expensive than some of the other single shadows in this post but compared to similar formulas  (like Giorgio Armani) they are excellent value. They have a doe foot applicator and have the most stunning dewy finish once applied that doesn't dull down once they set. They don't crease or move around on my eyelids and stay opaque when you blend them out instead of sheering out into nothingness. 12 is a true light gold that's perfect as an inner-corner highlighter or all across the lid for a very fresh-faced look. 15 is a brown-taupe that can be worn alone or as a base for a smoky eye.

H&M Eyeshadow in Act Your Beige | £4.99 | I picked this up in store but can never seem to find the shade online - I really hope it's not discontinued! This is the perfect everyday 'one-wash' eyeshadow; it's a beige tone with a subtle golden sheen. The formula is good because it applies evenly, has just the right amount of colour payoff and doesn't wear away as the day goes on.

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow in Boy Band | $5 | I absolutely love these unusual spongy-cream eyeshadows (especially the shimmer shades). This is an amazing blackened red-purple with a metallic shimmer. It's amazing as a liner if you use a little brush or you can wear it on the outer park of the lid for a smoky eye look. Once it sets in place, it doesn't budge!

Natural Collection Solo Eyeshadows in Milk Chocolate & Crushed Walnut | £1.99 each | I honestly can't recommend these matte single eyeshadows enough! I just repurchased these (as an attempt to depot them didn't go well...) and remembered how great they are. The formula is so smooth and blends beautifully. They aren't crazy-pigmented but are perfect for a soft, natural, everyday look. Milk Chocolate is a warm taupe and Crushed Walnut is a cool-toned deep brown.

Soap & Glory Supercat Eyeliner | £6 | This is an old favourite of mine and whilst I do favour Stila's option now, I still really rate this. It has a thin point but a larger nib so you can vary the thickness of your liner by changing the pressure or by angling it differently. It has a very matte finish and is really good at staying in place without smudging or transferring.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara | £7.99 | Of course my all-time favourite mascara is in here - I just couldn't resist mentioning it yet again! It's just amazing at giving length, curl and separated volume. It doesn't flake or smudge, it just makes my lashes look their absolute best and I'll always repurchase this one.

KIKO Precision Eyebrow Pencil (02) | £5.90 | This has been an amazing recent (and accidental) discovery for me. It has that ideal not-too-soft but still pigmented formula and the shade is the perfect colour for deepest brown hair like mine. The tone itself is natural and ashy without being too grey. It's also smudge-proof and comes with a really great brush on the other end. Perfect for a natural, everyday look!

Lips
Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipstick in Clay Crush | £7.99 | This has to be one of my most-worn lip colours! It has a creamy, comfortable formula (though if I had one criticism it would be that this isn't the most opaque shade in the world) that's still incredibly long-wearing. I love the warm terracotta-nude shade; it goes with so many of my makeup looks!

ColourPop Ultra Satin Lip in Echo Park | $6 | I didn't want to overload you with ColourPop in this post but I HAD to give this a mention. Again, it's one of my all-time most worn shades and I really need to dig out my backup of it because I'm running low! This is a gorgeous peachy-brown nude that works in the evening, paired with a smoky eye, or as an everyday shade. I find this so comfortable - it isn't quite as fully-matte as your usual liquid lipstick but still lasts so long and is very opaque.

Rimmel The Only 1 Matte Lipstick in The Matte Factor* | £6.99 | This has to be my favourite matte lipstick formula you can find on the high street and I'd love these even more if there were more shades that worked for me in the range! It's quite a creamy formula (so can transfer a little) but is so pigmented and still looks totally matte on the lips without that drying feeling. This is a gorgeous red-berry shade that reminds me a lot of MAC's Diva.

  3. When I read the silicone on the ordinary primer, I wasn't keen on to try it but I'm happy that I did. It feels more like a cream and definitely helps the makeup last longer. Smooth harmony looks so beautiful! Lash sensational is my favourite, I couldn't find any other better than this yet! x

  4. I adore Makeup Revolutions Baked bronzers, I have no clue why not many people have heard or seen these before they are amazing. They do remind me a lot of MAC's baked products. That NYX Sweet Cheeks blush palette is beautiful and I love how there is such a lovely array of colours which can suit all skin tones-great for makeup artists or experimenting. I really like the look of milk chocolate by Natural Collection.

  18. You've sold The Ordinary primer to me, I can't believe that it's only £4 aswel! What a bargain... Do you have porefessional by Benefit? I'm just curious as to how the two compare because that's the only primer I've found to really smooth out any visible pores to the point where I can't see them haha!

  24. I adore Nyx, sleek, maybelline and especially makeup revolution. Drugstore makeup definitely has a special place in my heart and drugstore makeup as a whole has really stepped up their game in recent years! They've definitely improved their quality since I first got into makeup. I am way over due for a makeup revolution they have come out with so many gorgeous products! I definitely need to pick up that baked bronzer as well, i get nervous around bronzers that aren't matte but the baked bronzer sounds amazing.
