The Best & Worst Liquid Lipstick Formulas

I like to think of myself as a bit of a liquid lipstick connoisseur these days! I find myself reaching for them almost as much as regular lipstick formulas. Obviously this post is based on my personal opinion but it might help if I talk about what I look for in liquid lipsticks to see if you might feel similarly about these products. For me, comfort is my key concern and I can't deal with drying formulas! I don't like formulas that flake or don't last on me either. Bearing that in mind, these are the hits and misses out of the products I've tried...

The Best

Huda Beauty Liquid Mattes | £18 each

This is probably the 'truest' matte finish liquid lipstick formula to make it into the favourites portion of this post. The consistency of this is very fluid but the colour is still completely opaque. It's incredibly long-wearing, though when it does begin to fade, it can give that 'lip liner' effect. However given that I get a good 5 hours of near-perfect wear out of this, I think that can be forgiven. I don't have any problems with the formula when I re-apply it either; it layers up without looking uneven or peeling. It doesn't have a creamy feel on the lips but isn't drying and doesn't leave me wanting to lick my lips or cling to any little patches of dry skin.

The shade I have (hopefully this is the first of many!) is Trendsetter. It's a warm terracotta-brown nude that's pretty much perfect for my skin tone.

Gerard Cosmetics Hydra Matte Liquid Lipsticks | £11.50 each

These are actually very similar to the Huda Beauty formula, in being very matte in finish and having a more watery consistency. Though, I'd actually say they're even more comfortable. The longevity of these is pretty good, though I usually want to touch-up around the 4-hour mark. It doesn't flake or go uneven when I re-apply the product and it doesn't start to feel dry after wearing it all day. Overall; definitely one of my all-time favourites formula-wise and some of my most-worn shades.

The shades I have here are Everything Nice (a very warm caramel-toned nude with almost muted peach undertones) and 1995 (a brown nude with plummy undertones).

Dose of Colours Matte Lipsticks | £15.95 each

I absolutely love this formula; it's a little thicker than the ones I've talked about so far but feels really nice and creamy on the lips. It doesn't cling to any imperfections on my lips and applies so easily with the slightly curved doe foot applicator. I'd say this isn't as long-wearing as some of the others in this post but I can forgive it because it's no more fuss to wear than a regular lipstick.

I have the shade Truffle, which is a slightly cool-toned medium brown with a little hint of pink in it.

ColourPop Ultra Satin Lips | $6 each

These are just amazing; although not *quite* fully matte, they give that opaque liquid lip look whilst feeling like a normal lipstick. They definitely have most comfortable formula to wear out of all of the products in this post. They don't flake, they wear surprisingly well despite not being true mattes and (besides the darker shades) don't transfer too much. For $6 you really can't go wrong with these and like all ColourPop products they come in a wide variety of shades.

I have so many of these that I've just picked a few of my favourite shades for this post: Echo Park (a medium brown-peach nude), Calypso (a more plum-mauve nude) and Frick N Frack (a warm berry-rose colour).

Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipsticks | £16 each

I was really in two minds as to whether include these or not. You may have noticed that after raving about these liquid lipsticks before Jeffree Star's true colours came to light, I haven't mentioned them on my blog since, and that was a conscious choice. I am going to be honest here and say they are amongst the best liquid lipsticks I've tried in terms of formula and I'm sure if you're reading this then you're a grown adult who can make their own choices. Personally, I choose to no longer support him with my money but I appreciate people have their own moral and ethical codes so I'm not about to tell you what to do. That aside, these liquid lipsticks are very opaque and comfortable to wear. I find the longevity to be extremely good and there is minimal transfer.

I have the shades Celebrity Skin (a light-medium cool-toned brown nude), Gemini (a rusty red-brown nude) and Rose Matter (an almost neon strawberry pink).

The Worst

Kylie Cosmetics Liquid Lipsticks | $17 each

To say that these were a disappointment would be a gross understatement! Don't get me wrong, I knew the hype machine was in full gear and these would probably be just average liquid lipsticks, but when I saw some unique shades that actually called to me; curiosity got the better of me. I've actually sold these now, which is why they aren't photographed but I've inserted the swatches from my original post before. These are incredibly drying and just make my lips look wrinkly and show every single imperfection. They also flake RIDICULOUSLY! Like, I can't eat and drink like a normal human being whilst wearing one of these, and what's the point in that?

I picked up two shades (one individually and one as part of a Lip Kit): Exposed (a sandy mid-toned brown nude) and Dirty Peach (a medium, vibrant peach colour with nude undertones).

ColourPop Ultra Matte Lips | $6 each

It's kind of hard to sum up my thoughts on these because I actually find the formula quite inconsistent; I actually wonder if they've recently reformulated these because they do seem to have gotten better with the newer releases. However overall I do find these really drying. Though they don't flake and will last hours and hours, I just can't get over how uncomfortable I find them to wear. The newer shade I've tried is much better in this respect but it's still far from a favourite. Perhaps I'm being unfair. They are only $6 each, I hear you cry, however if ColourPop can create something as amazing as the Ultra Satin Lips for the same price then I'll drag them for how drying this formula is!

Here I have the shade Screenshot (a dirty peach colour) and Bumble (a strawberry tone).

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks | £20 each

These have been so talked-about on YouTube that I confidently purchased 2 at $20 each whilst in New York. However I was incredibly disappointed. The colour range isn't great; I would have appreciated more variety in the nudes, which are all very light and brown-toned. I also really don't like the formula. Though they're very pigmented and opaque, they just feel soooo dry. I honestly feel like when I wear these they're sucking every last drop of moisture out of my poor lips. The wear-time is ok but when they fade it's very patchy and uneven. Not what I want, especially with quite bold shades like these!

I have Soft Lilac (a pinky-mauve lilac) and Kathryn (a deep red berry shade with pink undertones).

LA Splash Lip Couture Waterproof Matte Lipstick | £9.95 each

I'd actually heard quite positive things about these liquid lipsticks so was really disappointed with how much they didn't work for me! Things started off well; a nice colour selection, a completely matte and opacity opaque finish on application...however a sandwich sent things into a downward spiral! This is another reeeeeally flaky formula that basically peels off if you eat or drink, making it un-wearable for me.

Here I have Ghoulish* (a light lilac-toned greyish nude) and I have another shade I couldn't find for this post called Latte Confession - check that out here.

NYX Lip Lingeries | £6.50 each

These are more of a disappointment to me because I love the colour range and I find the Soft Matte and Liquid Suede formulas by NYX to be very comfortable to wear, so these looked like they'd be the best of  both worlds. However, they weren't! These aren't completely useless; I do sometimes wear them when my lips are very smooth and with a good dose of lip balm on underneath, but I do find them to be really drying. It's especially surprising given that the texture is quite creamy when first applied, but they set down to a really dry (but at least very long-lasting and non-flaky) finish.

I have Bedtime Flirt (a pinky-brown nude) and Ruffle Trim (a warm nude with terracotta undertones).

  1. I'm really curious as to what Jeffree Star has done? I feel totally out of the loop, wasn't he racist and also named some of his products controversial stuff? Please update me!! Also, I loved this post as I love liquid lipsticks so so much and it's great to know what are the best ones!

  2. Thanks for this, Jasmine! I bought a Colorpop bundle of 2 mattes and an ultra satin and wore one of the mattes for like 5mins before my lips felt drier than the desert! Still got hope for the satin x

  3. Nyx Lip Lingeries have such a great range of nudes, I think it's a shame they didn't use the same formula or something similar to the Suedes. Would love to try Gerard Cosmetics and their always on offer too! I've just received some Colourpop for the first time. I'm not finding the mattes (although fairly new formulas) that bad! Great post! :) xx

  4. i loovvee colourpop ultra satin! so comfy to wear. i also found kat von d's formula as one of the best. i can't help but agree with the LA splash liquid lipstick. i have the same latte confession and it's so pretty. they are incredibly drying but at least they are transfer-proof. surprisingly they stayed so hard and don't flake on me! thus why i always opted for it to use whenever i have eating spree but wanting to look decent.

  6. Just like yours my favourite are the Colourpop Ultra Satin Lips and Gerard Cosmetics Hydra Matte, I have one Jeffree Star liquid lipstick and I agree that is amazing, but don't feel comfortable supporting him so not sure if I will get more shades.
I have two Colourpop Ultra Matte lipsticks and I don't find them super drying so maybe the formula did improve. NYX Lyngeries didn't work for me either. x

    1. Yeah I'll enjoy the JS liquid lips that I have but won't be repurchasing, getting any more shades or promoting them on my blog. And yeah I've noticed the newer ColourPop Ultra Matte releases aren't as dry so who knows! xx

  7. Loved this post, Jasmine! I definitely want to pick up a couple in the bands you said you love, the Colour Pop Ultra Satin lips sound insanely good for the price. Jeffree Star has to be my favourite formula but I'm in two minds about whether I want to support him or his business anymore, such a shame as he has some amazing colours. I actually quite like the Anastasia formula, the biggest issue with it for me is that you can't layer them properly and how flaky they can go. I'm also really eager to try the Kat Von D ones. x

Please try the Bare Minerals Gen Nude Matte Liquid lip colour they are INCREDIBLE. I'm sure you will love them! 39. The only liquid lipsticks I've tried from all these are the NYX Lingerie, and I actually really like them! Although I do have to agree with you, they do start off quite creamy but get very dry very quickly. It hasn't affect me though, as I use the Rêve de Miel lip balm by Nuxe every time I wear lipstick - maybe try to add a layer of thick lip balm before wearing the Lingerie lipsticks, it might help with the finish :)
Also, the Gerard Cosmetics lipsticks seem like the best to me, and the shades are super pretty!

  41. hmm i dont see much difference between the gerard and lasplash on me, both last as long as each other and feel the same.
it's interesting how you wont support Jeffree Star (for good reasons) but support Gerard when the owner did some pretty nasty cyberbullying of a customer.

    1. Well I never said anyone needed to follow my personal feelings on the matter, nor did I judge anyone else's morals. As far as I'm aware the founder was overheard calling someone ugly or something along those lines? Whilst unprofessional I don't really class that in the same league as Jeffree's catalogue gross behaviour over years and years and total lack of remorse. However if there's something I should be aware of please enlighten me.

    2. basically, the owner of Gerard and MannyMUa were on snapchat and posted this video of them 'watching hate videos' and mentions this youtuber called KarinaKaboom, and just before the vid cuts off, the owner says ' she is the ugliest person ive ever seen' . now snapchat is one thing..but to then upload it and then straight after the vid cuts to manny talking about all the hatemail the owner has got..very hypocritical.
Basically it boils down to ..it's very hard to find genuine youtube reviews of gerard cosmetics and they are all paid for by the company and the dodgy issue is any person who was to receive the items to showcase in their vids (i cant say review for obvious reasons) had to sign a contract before receiving any items that they would ONLY give a good review...any negative..or generally honest reviews would breach of contract. So most sponsored vids you see of their products, you cant get an honest idea of them because they have to say they are good. Only the ones whove bought the products themselves are the ones you can trust, which comes to the point of Karina. she gave an honest review of one of Gerard's products, which was negative because she didnt like one of the items and another which she had an allergic reaction too.. because of that, the owner and this mua publically tried to shame her and make their army of fans harass the girl (which they did, much how Jeffree's fans do to anyone who says anything negative about him)
if you go on youtube and search - gerard cosmetics bullying scandal you'll find the Karinakaboom video and a couple of other youtubers talk about it.
I wasn't accusing you btw, sorry it came across that way. i was just curious as you made a point about Jeffree Star's attitude, but didnt mention anything about Jen the owner and Gerard cosmetics.
i have a couple of Gerard lipsticks and as i said, they are ok, better than some really cheap liquid lipsticks, but not amazing and not better than lasplash ones, but that's on my lips and everyone is different :) and i totally agree on the Kylie lipsticks...they are awful! again sold on just hype alone and probably sponsored videos.
i'd recommend trying the MakeupMonsters range and Blackmoon cosmetics. ive bought from both of them and been impressed.

      Delete
    3. That's pretty tacky of them! Trying to force positive reviews out of influencers sadly isn't that uncommon - personally I'd rather buy something myself and write about it on my own terms if they're going to be like that, though I have noticed US laws on sponsorship in YouTube videos seem much more lax than in the UK.
In all honesty I wouldn't have even known who Jen Gerard was, whereas Jeffree Star is very famous and very visible as the face of his brand so I can't disassociate the two and I believe his behaviour to be BEYOND vile (racism, glamourising drugs and guns, destroying bags that could feed a family for 6 months etc. etc. etc.) and he's done these things over and over again over years with no remorse. It takes a lot for me to completely disregard a product based on the conduct of the brand it belongs to but for me he 100% crosses that line.

  42. Very similar Jeffree Star experience. Bought gemini, doll parts, and weirdo before I learned about his extremely racist comments. Even though they're the best formula of their kind (the non-viscous type), I find myself subconsciously avoiding them.
