The Matte Eyeshadows I Can Work With

Matte eyeshadows are so hard to get right and I've experienced my fair share of duds! Today I'll be sharing with you the matte eyeshadows that are a dream to work with.

Blank Canvas Master Series Palette 1* | £29.36 | I'd never heard of this brand before this showed up on my doorstep and I really don't know how because this palette is amazing! Firstly: it honestly could've been designed by me with all the warm neutral tones and secondly: the mattes are an absolute dream to work with. There's a token golden-champagne shimmer (Goddess) to pop in the inner-corner but the rest of the shades are matte. The formula is smooth and blends out beautifully and all the shades have really impressive pigmentation. Even the light white shade isn't chalky! There is a little bit of fallout, however nothing major and I still feel like these wear well on my eyelids. I feel like this has everything I need as far as an everyday eye look goes and if I want to add a little something extra for the evening, I take one of my ColourPop Metallic eyeshadows and press it in the centre of the lid. There are enough darker shades in here to create a matte smoky eye if you want though. They're all beautiful but I think if I had to pick a few favourites they'd be Hibiscus (a warm medium-dark saddle brown), Brazen (a warm peachy-brown medium transition shade), Carmin (a medium reddish-brown), Cocoa (a medium brown with red and orange undertones) and Downtown (a truer dark chocolate brown).

Too Faced Natural Eye Palette (Cashmere Bunny & Sexpresso) | £32 | review | I'm honestly contemplating getting the all-matte version of this palette based on the amazing quality of these two shades. There are a couple of other mattes in the palette which are nice but for me it's all about Cashmere Bunny and Sexpresso! Looking at the shades together; the two from Natural Collection I'll talk about later aren't bad dupes of these two at all. Too Faced's formula does beat Natural Collection's for me but if you aren't feeling the shimmers in here that's always an option. These shades have some of the best colour payoff of any of the mattes in my stash but still look very natural on the eyes and are easy to work with. Cashmere Bunny is a medium brown-taupe and Sexpresso is a neutral-toned dark brown.

Anastasia Beverley Hills Modern Renaissance Palette | £41 | review | This is such an amazing palette and I love the Anastasia matte formula. I don't think there's a dud in the entire palette; they're everything you could ever want from a matte formula. There is a bit of fallout but they do blend beautifully and the pigmentation translates amazingly onto the lids. My full review has all the information so I'll just pick out some favourites in this post. I love the muted mustard shade of Raw Sienna, Cyprus Umber (a dark charcoal), Red Ochre (a reddish-brown) and Realgar (a warm orange with brown undertones).

Natural Collection Solo Eyeshadows in Crushed Walnut & Milk Chocolate | £1.99 each | These have to be the best eyeshadows you can get for this price! I really love the mattes; they're soft, have the right level of pigment and are so easy to use. I don't know how they make them so smooth! I'd definitely recommend checking out Crushed Walnut (a slightly cool-toned dark brown) and Milk Chocolate (a taupe colour with brown undertones). I actually depotted these badly so just picked up new ones! They're perfect crease colours that you will use every single day.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Beware | £14 | To be honest pretty much any Urban Decay matte eyeshadows could've been in this post but I just really love this shade. I definitely don't use it enough as a single eyeshadow but the fact I'm moving house soon has made me dig out some of the products I don't reach for enough and see if they work for me. This is definitely one of the shades that does; it's a gorgeous mid-brown, neutral-toned crease colour. It's so smooth, so pigmented and really easy to apply. The fallout is minimal and it's very long lasting. I just find this adds dimension to any eyeshadow look; I often use a shimmery cream shadow across the lid and pop a bit of this in the crease and it really works.

Makeup Geek Eyeshadow Pans in Frappe & Cocoa Bear | £4.95 | Makeup Geek is one of the brands I credit with helping me see the light when it comes to mattes! I've not tried a single chalky shade from them but Frappe and Cocoa Bear are the ones I can't live without. Again, there's such incredible colour payoff, and these really don't have much fallout at all despite blending out so well. Frappe is a very warm mid-toned brown and Cocoa Bear is a deeper brown with reddish undertones. I often find that darker, more coloured matte shades can be a bit staining and hard to blend out but I don't find that with Cocoa Bear at all.

Anastasia Beverley Hills Single Eyeshadows in Red Earth | $12 | This is definitely one of the shades that made me fall for Anastasia eyeshadows! It's a gorgeous, muted, earthy pinky-brown matte. I just think this is going to be one of my every-single-day shades when Autumn comes round. It honestly just glides on and has amazing colour payoff. It isn't powdery and doesn't kick up too much fallout and after the end of a long day, I can still see it's in place.

What are your favourite matte eyeshadows?

  2. I also love sexpresso and cashmere bunny! They're the one I use the most from the palette after the two light glittery shades, so easy to work with and pigmented enough for my dark lids.

  10. I'm really not much of a matte fan either due to a lot of them lacking in quality and pigment. I have the Too Faced palette and it is actually one of my favourites for matte shades for the same reasons you said. I've never heard of the first palette you mentioned (Black Canvas?) but the swatches look amazing on you espeially that Godess shade!

  33. I've been really enjoying a completely matte eye shadow look recently. Frappe and Cocoa Bear are my amazing! I like the sound of the UD single shadow, although I'm debating investing in the new Naked palette. I'm a huge fan of the ABH palette too. The Blank Canvas sounds lovely! I've not heard much about that brand either, but it sounds worth checking out xx
