Today we're talking winter moisturisers; here in the UK we're getting sub-zero temperatures (and not just in the Outer Hebrides!) so if you hadn't found yourself reaching for the big guns yet, I'm sure you are now...

First up, let's talk about the Skin Fix Barrier+ Triple-Lipid Peptide Cream | £52. This is a great alternative for people who like to invest in their skincare but can't quite make it to the eye-watering price-point of the Skinceuticals Triple Lipid Cream! This moisturiser is formulated with ingredients that will nourish and replenish your skin on every level. Glycerin is going to draw hydration into the skin, shea butter will provide that deep nourishment and jojoba oil will soften the skin. This product also features soothing aloe, a reparative peptide, Vitamin E (a fat-soluble antioxidant) and a PHA, which is a gentle exfoliant with hydrating properties. And, of course, the holy trinity of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids; the three components of your skin barrier which can be topped up topically. The skin barrier is more prone to becoming compromised during the colder months, so these sorts of ingredients are a must, in my opinion. This actually isn't too thick or rich, so if you're more on the oily / combination side of things, you might enjoy this as a night cream, however my dry skin enjoys this even during the daytime and it still works really nicely under makeup. It keeps things feeling nice and soft all day long and is great for providing my winter skin with deep nourishment.

Next, let's talk about my budget pick: the Byoma Barrier+ Repair Treatment* | £16.99. This is kind of a cream-balm hybrid formula, so you can spot-apply it specifically to dry patches or do what I do, which is use it as an all-over night cream. It's formulated with the same combination of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids that I loved in the Skin Fix formula, but obviously this is more purse-friendly, plus it contains ectoin which can help soothe, protect and repair the skin (this is the only drugstore product I've come across so far containing this ingredient). It also features squalane (a replenishing skin-similar oil), avocado oil (which is rich in replenishing fatty goodness), glycerin, shea butter, Vitamin E and allantoin (which is a soothing, anti-redness ingredient). This ensures my skin stays hydrated overnight and that it feels soft and moisturised by morning. This is a product that's also really calming for my skin when things are feeling a little tender.

An old favourite of mine that I recently rediscovered is the I'm From Rice Cream* | £30 (15% off with code JASMINETALKSBEAUTY (affiliate)). This is a fluffy and airy feeling moisturiser that still packs a punch, can be used AM or PM and has a mid-range price-point. This product centres rice bran ceramides, which of course are going to help keep the skin barrier strong and healthy (I'm sure you're getting the theme of this post now!) This product also features shea butter and glycerin, which I'm sure you're also noticing is a common theme in terms of my preference when it comes to winter moisturisers. This also contains Vitamin E and moisturising rice bran oil. The texture is so elegant, this is beautiful to use under makeup and it nourishes my skin without feeling heavy or leaving any kind of greasy excess on the surface of my skin. This is a really beautiful product.

Next, we have the big guns: the Ordinary's Natural Moisturising Factors +PhytoCeramides* | £20 (100ml) | £20 (also available in 30ml for £9.60). This honestly isn't for anyone who doesn't have dry skin! However they do have the original Natural Moisturising Factors and the light gel version for other skin types. This product definitely has an oil base, which I personally really like in a night cream during the winter, because it just feels like it seals everything in and makes my skin incredibly soft when I wake up the next morning. This moisturiser is formulated with natural moisturising factors such as urea, hyaluronic acid and PCA, which naturally occur in the skin (by using products formulated with these ingredients you can boost your skin's overall hydration levels). It also contains plant ceramides and glycolipids to nourish, replenish and strengthen the skin. When I'm feeling lazy and just want to slap on a moisturiser and crash out; this is a great option to ensure my skin ends up feeling soft and happy.

Possibly my all-time favourite moisturiser in any category is the Kate Somerville DeliKate Recovery Cream* | £72. This is a rich and buttery moisturiser that helps to replenish my skin and give it everything it needs overnight (though I do occasionally use this during the daytime when the weather is very cold). We have glycerin and shea butter (of course!) and various non-fragrant plant oils for softer skin, Vitamin E, ectoin, ginger as an anti-inflammatory, bisabolol (the soothing active component in chamomile), rice extract and ceramides and cholesterol. It just feels wonderful on my skin and it's one of the few things it can tolerate when I've been having issues with my skin. I've used a tub of this product up every single winter since I first discovered it in 2020 and it's a luxurious-feeling formula without any fragrance and with all of the good stuff your skin barrier will love.

Finally, we have the Laniege Blue Hyaluronic Water Bank Intensive Moisturiser* | £33.50. It has an interesting texture; kind of like a balm which has some density to it but it has an almost matte texture. This is an overnight moisturiser option for me. It's hard to explain, but it doesn't have an oil base and doesn't create any shine on the skin. It's formulated with glycerin, fatty alcohol, squalane, fermented ingredients (which can help boost the skin barrier), hyaluronic acid (to draw hydration into the skin), ceramides and niacinamide (along with its ability to regulate oil production in the skin and prevent the spread of hyperpigmentation, it can also boost the skin's own ceramide production). If you don't enjoy a really rich oil-based moisturiser then this is the one for you; whilst it feels nourishing and substantial, it won't leave your skin feeling smothered or looking shiny.

What are your favourite winter moisturisers?
