This Year's Beauty Game-Changers

Today I thought I'd do something slightly different and talk through the brands and products I think really made their mark on the beauty world during 2017. These were the trailblazers that did something different this year and changed the beauty industry for the better!

The Ordinary brings us amazing skincare ingredients and foundations that match for under £10

Ok, so the Ordinary kind of launched at the end of last year but I think when we waved goodbye to 2016, half of my initial order still hadn't been shipped! However 2017 was definitely this brand's year. In case you've been living under a rock; this brand brings proven active ingredients in the form of skincare products priced at £6 on average. They are very much a functional brand as far as the packaging, naming and the feel of the products goes. The Ordinary has since branched out into makeup, which caused mass hysteria on the internet! I can't wait to see what they do to top all of this in 2018...

I have several in-depth reviews of their products here, but I just wanted to have a little run-through of a few of the standouts. I really like the Niaciamide 10% + Zinc 1% | £5 | for calming breakouts, reducing redness and keeping my skin clear (it's a serum to be used before applying foundation). I also swear by their primers - the High-Spreadability Fluid Primer* | £5.50 | is a favourite in particular (though I do find the packaging slightly annoying). It just smooths my skin, filling in pores and fine lines, and leaves the perfect satin base for makeup. The foundations are under £6 but come in an incredible 21 shades, so you can probably see why they all but broke the internet! As the name suggests, the Coverage Foundation | £5.90 | gives a medium-full satin coverage, whereas the Serum Foundation | £5.70 | (which I prefer) has a lighter, more natural look on the skin.

Fenty Beauty brings out a foundation with 40 shades in its first launch

Fenty Beauty (Rihanna's venture with Kendo) kind of came out of nowhere this year and seriously shook things up. The products are cleverly priced at the lower end of high-end and come in packaging that's suitably luxe and has mass appeal. She's launched highlighters, concealers, contouring products, lipgloss, eyeshadows and so on, but the product that really grabbed everyone's attention was the foundation.

Obviously Fenty Beauty isn't the first brand in the world to ever release a wide shade range of foundations, however it was a bold move for an initial launch. It wasn't just their first foundation but the centrepiece of the brand launch, which is why everyone seemed to stand up and take notice. Since the hype around this product, I've noticed a lot of other brands trying to be more inclusive, so if it kicks the beauty industry into gear I'm more than happy to keep talking about Fenty! You can check out my full review here but essentially the Pro Flit'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation | £26 | has a full-coverage and matte formula without looking flat or heavy on the skin.

Colour Wow delivers the haircare product I've been waiting for

I'd never really come across this brand before, as it's obviously geared more towards coloured hair, however it does have an amazing range of styling products too. The collection includes the amazing Dream Coat Supernatural Sealant* | £22 | which is a product designed to be misted on the hair before blowdrying to help it retain its style even in damp or humid conditions. And it works! It's become a non-negotiable step in my beauty routine because I used to have the kind of hair that would frizz at the slightest sign of moisture - if you have a similar issue then this is the answer!

Glossier finally launches in the UK

There isn't a brand on the internet that's had more hype than Glossier and 2017 was the year it finally landed in the UK and the prices weren't ridiculously marked-up! The strap line for this US indie brand is 'skincare first, makeup second', neatly summing up its approach to beauty. It focuses on products you can use every day and has a minimalist approach. Although I do love full coverage every now and then, most of the time I'm working in an office so want products that are quick, easy and natural, so this brand really spoke to me.

You can check out some of my Glossier content here, however I'm going to give an overview of my essentials. The Milky Jelly Cleanser | £15 | is the perfect morning or second cleanse - it's simple, effective and functional, leaving my skin fresh, soft and clean after use. The Coconut Balm Dotcom | £10 | is one of those products that I just always have to have to hand - it's a multipurpose product that can be used to hydrated the lips or smooth dry patches of skin (plus it smells SO good...) The Priming Moisturiser | £18 | is the perfect hybrid product for lazy mornings - it smooths and hydrates my skin, as well as having that adhesive quality to ensure my base applies evenly (side note: you can actually get all 3 of these products at a discount if you get the Phase 1 Set | £35). The other product I use all the time is the Cloud Paint in Dusk | £15 | because it's the perfect natural peachy-brown nude blusher tone and one of the few liquid / cream formulas that lasts on my skin without going patchy.

REN creates the perfect makeup-skincare hybrid

REN is one of my favourite skincare brands, so I was really excited when I heard they were launching this product. The Perfect Canvas* | £50 | is part serum, part primer and (as the name might suggest) is intended to give your skin the perfect finish so your makeup looks amazing. It's incredible at smoothing out my pores and preventing my base from settling into fine lines. It's both hydrating and replenishing, ensuring my complexion looks its best.

Milani brings out highlighters to rival luxury brands for £13

Milani is a brand I'm a huge fan of - although their prices have increased a little, I still think they provide luxury packaging and high-quality products for a reasonable cost. In 2017 they launched their highlighter collection and I was beyond impressed! The Strobelight Instant Glow Powders | £12.99 each | come in an impressive range of stunning and wearable colours from pearly pink to champagne to gold to deep bronze. The formula is so incredible smooth and finely-milled with a soft metallic (glitter-free) sheen that still gives an amazing highlight. I have the shades: Dayglow (a light warm gold), Sunset Glow* (a warm bronzed amber) and Glowing* (a deep golden-bronze). I really think there's something for everyone in this collection and I'd rate the formula and shade range up there alongside some of my favourite brands like Becca, Anastasia and Jouer.

ColourPop does eyeshadow palettes and they're amazing (and under £15!)

I absolutely love ColourPop - I feel like they're a brand at the forefront of something very exciting. Time and time again they deliver very affordable, high-quality, fun cosmetics that are cruelty-free and their regular new launches mean their product range is forever relevant and on-trend. This year they launched eyeshadow palettes - I actually wasn't bowled over my their initial eyeshadow pan collection, however with each new release they've improved the formula. In 2017 they brought out super-affordable pre-made palettes and I'm impressed with them! My top pick is the I Think I Love You Pressed Powder Eyeshadow Palette | $16. The quality of the formula is incredible - they're so smooth and easy to blend out, plus it has amazing colour payoff. The longevity is good and I think the shade range is perfection! You have a few mattes and some amazing, almost foil-effect shimmers in a range of warm golds, bronzes and coppers. I really don't think you're going to get a better palette for this price anywhere!

  11. I love these picks. The Ordinary definitely made the biggest mark from where I stand and that Glossier UK launch sucked me right in ;) Fenty really doesn't appeal to me at all but I do appreciate such an inclusive shade range on first launch. Very cool and we definitely need the more established brands (esp drugstore) to learn from this xxx

  13. I hope beyond hope that next year Beauty Bay pick up ColourPop so I can enjoy those glorious palettes without the customs fees. So many great picks here. This was the year that I fell hard for The Ordinary Skincare and I got to check out the Glossier products in person at the pop up shop in London. So fab, I predict a lot more new brands arriving next week. A major hit this year has to be Juvia's Place shadows they are stunning and I think BH Cosmetics have really stepped up and released some great products this year. Thank you for sharing x

  22. I was so excited that Glossier launched in the UK and Canada - it makes me so happy to see everyone enjoy their products because so many of their products are firm favorites for me. Dusk was probably my most favorite blush of 2017 and I used it so much but am nowhere near finishing it up. The Ordinary was definitely one of the standout skincare brands for me in 2017 and I fell in love with the cold-pressed rosehip seed oil - it was a game changer for my skincare routine for sure.

Excited for all the content you'll bring out this year, Jasmine :)
