Summer-Proof Evening Makeup

I honestly LOVE summer makeup; for me, there's nothing more gorgeous than a warm-toned golden makeup look with plenty of highlighter. This is the kind of look I like to do for the evening and of course I've ensured it's all super heat-proof and long-wearing, as the weather has finally started hotting up... You can even adapt this into a  festival look, which is what I did for Love Saves the Day last month, basically: just add glitter! I also have a few different options so you can tailor this look to what you want whilst still keeping the overall vibe.

Base

Prep

Hylamide Matte 12 Primer* | £23 | This is an old favourite from last summer that I'm already using again this year! I always prime my skin before makeup but it's especially important on those hot summer nights to keep the shine at bay. This has a gel texture without feeling slippery on the skin and smooths out its surface. However what I really love is that it keeps my base matte without being drying and helps to prolong its wear-time.

Bobbi Brown Corrector (Peach) | £19.50 | I always correct under the eyes as it prevents me having to cake on a load of heavy concealer. In one light layer, this peachy-toned cream product does a great job of cancelling out my dark circles. I find for the most natural look, this is best used before foundation.

The foundation look:

Semi-matte, long-lasting, full-coverage that doesn't suffocate the skin

I recommend:

Estée Lauder Double Wear Light Stay-in-Place Makeup (Intensity 3.5) | £32.50 | review | This is the slightly less full-on younger sibling of the famous Double Wear formula. This is still incredibly long-wearing, however it gives more of a semi-matte finish (I personally don't find the original to be drying or flat but this is just a little more on the 'satin' side of things) and a medium-full coverage (as opposed to full-full!) It's perfect for this kind of look because it'll stay in place and you don't need to worry about your face getting shiny, plus it won't feel heavy or smothering.

L'Oreal Infalliable Pro-Matte Foundation (106 Sun Beige) | £13.95 | review | This is very similar to the Estée Lauder but a bit more natural and build-able (Double Wear Light is kind of 'one note' in terms of the level of coverage) and of course more affordable! Again, it isn't totally flat in finish, allowing a sort of 'matte radiance' to the skin without being shiny. It's not heavy, it doesn't look like you're wearing loads of makeup and again, the longevity is amazing!

The concealer look:

Long lasting concealer with amazing coverage

My recommendation:

Kat Von D Lock It Creme Concealer (Medium Neutral 29) | £20 | When it comes to summer base makeup, I need something that's going to give me the coverage and not slip off my skin in the heat but without looking caky or heavy. Hello, Kat Von D concealer! It has amazing full coverage but doesn't feel too thick when applied with a damp BeautyBlender. It doesn't look drying under my eyes but stays in place incredibly well.

Lock it in

Ben Nye Banana Luxury Powder Dome Jar* | £10.80 | I use a tapered brush with this loose powder to set under my eyes. You only need the tiniest amount, but used correctly, this won't look caky or dry (unless your skin itself is very dry) - it'll just lock the concealer in place so it doesn't crease or budge for hours on end.

Urban Decay De Slick Setting Spray | £23.50 | I always finish off my makeup with a bit of setting spray and for long-lasting summer makeup, this is my go-to. It's very fine mist that locks everything in place whilst helping keep things free from shine.

Cheeks

The highlighter look:

Golden goddess-like

My recommendations:

Too Faced Love Light Prismatic Highlighter in You Light Up my Life | £25 | This is such a unique shade; an antique gold with these almost olive undertones. Despite the appearance, it isn't some insanely intense highlighter, it gives a metallic sheen that I love. There's no glitter, just a lovely, soft glow.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Prosecco Pop | £32 | This has recently become a permanent shade individually - hurrah! It's a more intense, dewy-effect highlighter in a warm gold colour. It's also going to give you a sun-kissed glow but it's a bit lighter and therefore more dramatic on the skin.

The blusher look:

Either brown-bronze blush or an orange-gold

My recommendations:

Becca Mineral Blush in Amaretto | £32 | This isn't available in the UK any more but I wanted to be true to what I actually like to use (a similar shade would be Sleek's Suede - review). This formula is a sort of luminous matte and the shade a warm bronzed-brown caramel tone. It's smooth, pigmented and long-wearing on my skin, without being too much for the rest of the look.

Becca Mineral Blush in Songbird | £26 | Yes, it's another Becca blush! This is very similar to Amaretto in formula, but I'd say it's more pigmented and it also has a golden sheen running through it that gives a glitter-free highlight. This is a warm orange-red tone that should be applied with a light hand.

Bronze

Make Up For Ever Pro Bronze Fusion in 30M Sienna | £28.50 | This is just my all-time favourite bronzer! The formula is hard to describe, as it doesn't have a very powdery texture and looks so natural on the skin. It's almost impossible to go overboard with and will never leave you looking orange! It's very easy to apply smoothly and evenly and will stay in place all night long.

Eyes

Prime

Urban Decay Primer Potion (Original) | £17 | I honestly can't tell you what a difference this makes! Once or twice I've forgotten to use it and my eye makeup hasn't held up a fraction as well as it usually does. This is a semi-sheer cream eye primer. A little goes a long way with this, so although it's an investment I've been using this same tube every day for over a year!

MAC Paint Peintures in Bamboom | £16 | The next step is to lay down a cream base. This evens out the tone of the eyelid and gives your powders something to 'stick' to. This is a pinky-taupe brown with a subtle golden sheen that comes in this little tube. It's seriously long-wearing so works well even on its own for priming.

The basics

Makeup Geek Eyeshadow Pan in Shimma Shimma | £4.95 | I like quite a dramatic highlight on the inner corner, especially for an evening look. This is a smooth off-white champagne with a soft shimmer, which is perfect for opening up the eyes. I honestly find Makeup Geek's formula to be so long-wearing too!

Makeup Geek Eyeshadow Pan in Peach Smoothie | £4.95 | This is a matte shade that's slightly crumbly in texture but I put up with it because it's the perfect transition shade. On the plus side, that does mean it applies smoothly and evenly. The light-medium peach tone gives the look so much dimension.

Makeup Geek Eyeshadow Pan in Frappe | £4.95 | I then add this warm mid-toned caramel-brown shade to the crease. This just defines the socket in a way that's nice and soft and fits with the warm eye look I'm going for here.

The eyeshadow look:

A golden-amber shadow in the centre of the lid to make the look really 'pop'

My recommendations:

Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream Eyeshadow in 12 Golden Copper | £17 | This is a gorgeous, long-wearing, very opaque cream formula. I'd say this is a softer, less orange-toned gold, so if you don't want to go too warm then opt for this. It's very long-lasting and doesn't crease, even in the heat.

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow in Kathleenlights | $5 | If you want something a little bolder, with almost tattoo-like longevity, then this is it. It has the most dewy, metallic, pigmented formula and this is a very warm amber-toned gold. It's kind of a cream, but unlike anything you've ever tried before; it has an almost spongy-mousse texture. With both this and the Make Up For Ever, I just use my finger to pat the product directly onto the centre of my lid.

Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadow in Legend | £7.95 | If you don't like cream eyeshadows then this is another way to create the look. It's a Foiled formula, which has an almost liquid-metal finish and such a smooth texture for a powder. Whilst not quite as long-wearing as Makeup Geek's standard formula, it's still pretty good. This is a very warm, slightly deeper orange-toned gold.

Finishing touches

Anastasia Beverly Hills Eyeshadow Single in Sienna | £10 | I love Anastasia eyeshadows; their matte formula has so much pigment however is still easy to blend out (the texture isn't at all dry) and lasts very well on me. I use this shade on a precise, pointed brush just to further define and deepen the outer part of the crease. It's a warm brown shade with reddish undertones.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Eyeshadow Single in Cognac | £10 | Finally for eyeshadow, I use this on the outer part of the lid and blend, blend, blend. This is a shimmer shade but the sheen is very nice and subtle, though the colour payoff is amazing. It's a warm brown-toned red which you can also take below the eye and across the lower lash line for extra smokiness.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Scorch | £15.50 | This is the most creamy, pigmented liner but once it sets down, it won't budge for any amount of sweat or tears! It's a warm golden colour with bronze undertones. The finish is a subtle metallic sheen but doesn't contain any glitter.

Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner in Stingray* | £14.50 | This is the most pigmented black crayon liner I've ever come across! It also doesn't smudge or smear on my eyes. It's perfect for tight-lining and making the lashes appear thicker and your liner more flawless.

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Intense Black | £14.50 | I won't bore you, because I bang on about this constantly and it's my favourite! The tip of this pen liner is so precise and flexible, plus it stays very opaque and inky even after months of use. This is perfect for getting defined winged liner that isn't going to budge or transfer in the heat.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara | £8.99 | I love Maybelline Lash Sensational, but just to ensure it stays in place in the heat, I often switch to the waterproof version for summer. It's amazing at lengthening and curling my lashes, plus adds a bit of volume. It's a little crispier than the original but doesn't flake and stays put.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade (Granite) | £15 | For long-lasting makeup, it has to be this! I apply it with a precise, smaller winged liner brush and you can draw in each individual hair as well as completely re-define the shape of your brows without looking totally ridiculous. It's waterproof, sweat-proof and smudge-proof, plus comes in a variety of shades.

Lips

The lipstick look:

Either a sand-beige nude or a reddish-orange, depending on which blusher tone you opted for

My recommendations:

Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipstick in Clay Crush | £6.99 | This is both an affordable alternative, a traditional lipstick option and one to go for if you want something to pair with Amaretto that's a little richer than the other beige tones I have in here. This is a warm, terracotta-toned nude that has slightly pinkish undertones. It isn't the most opaque formula in the world but is very comfortable to wear, has a true matte finish and also lasts very well.

ColourPop Ultra Satin Lip in Strut | $6 | Another real bargain here, but this time a liquid lipstick. This is that perfect warm beige tone for when you want the focus of the look to be entirely on your eyes. This is a semi-matte formula that feels like a traditional lipstick but has the longevity of a liquid formula, so you get the best of both worlds.

HudaBeauty Liquid Matte in Girlfriend | £18 | If you want that totally matte, beige nude lip then this is your product. It's also the most long-wearing of the bunch and, as far as liquid lipsticks go, I don't find this formula too drying. It's very liquid-y in consistency but super, super opaque.

Nars Satin Lipstick in Kiss Me Stupid | £21 | This was Limited Edition and annoyingly seems to be sold out everywhere, but if you can track it down in-store, this works beautifully with Songbird on the cheeks (if not, I've got two alternatives!) This is great if you want a shade that's a little brighter than a nude but is still totally wear-able. It has a semi-sheer formula that feels incredibly comfortable and the colour is a warm red-toned terracotta.

Nars Audacious Lipstick in Jane | £25 | I would say that unless it's a big event with lots of photos, if you want to go for this (or our next option) on the lips then go slightly less bold with the eyes (like opting for the Make Up for Ever shade in the centre of the lids and just using the Urban Decay liner across the lower lashes and not smoking things out too much). It's a very pigmented formula with a slight sheen, so does transfer a little, but the upshot is that it's nice and moisturising. This is a warm red-toned terracotta orange.

Ofra Long-Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Miami Fever | £11 | This is actually at the perfect price-point for a guilt-free treat and honestly, I've got so much wear out of it (though the writing has now rubbed off the tube!) It's very pigmented and despite having a creamier texture, it is still a true liquid lipstick formula. It's really long-wearing and nothing too drying, so if you want to go for a bold red-orange in the heat, then this is perfect.

  4. I struggle a lot to keep my makeup long-lasting in the summer. The heat makes everything melt and rubs off my lipstick, and I'm not sure about wearing matte lipsticks as I'm afraid they'd just dry out the lips. I should probably invest in a good primer, as you said it's important to keep the skin shine-free so that might help my oily skin!

  8. Whenever the weather gets too hot, the first thing to go for me is foundation and I stick to just using concealer under my eyes and around my nose. I am lucky to have really good skin though so I get away with minimal makeup. My focus usually is on the eyes and lips.

  11. This is such a well detailed post!

I need a new foundation, or just something very light now that everyone is melting in the UK. I'm going to reach for the Estee Lauder CC creme but the Double Wear Light sounds like it might be a better fit for me.

Clay Crush is so pretty! It must look so pretty with those earthy toned shadows.

  12. What a lovely selection of products! We've entered Winter here in Australia so I feel the need for extra hydrating but this past summer the heat wave was insane so it definitely was a struggle to keep my makeup from melting of.
