New Skincare on Trial

Over the past few weeks I've been testing a good few new skincare products and it's time to talk about what I think of them so far (and there are some complete winners in the mix!)

Cleansers

Jurlique Rose Moisture Plus Cleanser* | £18 | I was so excited to try this cleanser as I really like the face mist from Jurlique but haven't tried anything else from this brand. This ticks a lot of boxes for my combination-dehydrated skin because it's a moisturising cream-based cleanser that's very slightly foaming. It does the job of making my skin feel clean of dirt and oils in the morning without stripping my skin. It does have a light rose fragrance, which isn't at all irritating on me but if you don't like the smell of roses it might not be your thing.
Ingredients include: rosehip, willow bark extract and lavender

Elemental Herbology Harmonising Cleansing Oil* | £29 | I pretty much always use an oil-based cleanser to remove my makeup in the evening with a muslin cloth - it's just so much quicker and more efficient than other methods out there for me. I've tried a huge array of products at different price-points and pretty much know what I want. I do find this effective at removing even the more stubborn eye makeup and it's nice and lightweight, not leaving any sort of greasy excess on the skin. However I don't think it's gentle enough on my eyes! It smells lovely but I do think the fragrance is probably the culprit here. For the price, I just think you can get another product that does the job and doesn't sting your eyes.
Ingredients include: avocado and Vitamin C

Elemental Herbology Vital Cleanse* | £29 | I fared much better with this cleanser which can be used in the morning or as a cleanser for the skin after you've removed your makeup. I've used this a few times and still can't work out if it's very slightly foaming or not! Either way, I love Manuka Honey as a skincare ingredient and this product is no exception; it helps to keep the skin clear of blemishes (as a natural antiseptic) but also nourishes and hydrates.
Ingredients include: Manuka honey, Vitamin C and green tea

Proelle Organic Cleansing Gel for Normal/Combination Skin* | £10 | This gel-based cleanser sounded on paper like it was perfect for me, but perhaps it's the balance of ingredients that just doesn't work for me. It smells very lemon-y and has quite an astringent quality. Either way, I find it just too harsh on my sometimes-sensitve skin. It's such a shame as I was looking forward to find an affordable, all-natural product for combination skin.
Ingredients include: aloe vera, witch hazel, tea tree and lemon

Toners & Exfoliators

Vichy Idealia Peeling* | £20 | This is a really hard product to describe - although it's an overnight treatment, it isn't a cream or lotion, it's a liquid so I've categorised it as a toner. All you have to do is apply it to the skin on a cotton wool pad before bed, which you can follow up with a moisturiser if you want. It contains 4% glycolic acid and 5% hepes which act as acid exfoliants to renew the skin. This is incredibly gentle so I totally recommend it if you're new to acid peels or have a more sensitive skin type. Sometimes (as someone with normal but occasionally sensitive skin) I get a bit of a sensation with acid peels, however this honestly doesn't feel any more intensive or harsh than a normal toner. The effects are subtle but noticeable; over the time I've used this I've noticed that in the morning my skin looks fresher and more glowing. The texture feels nice and even and any patches of hyper-pigmentation are clearing up nicely.
Ingredients include: glycolic acid, hepes and black tea

Perricone MD Exfoliating Pore Refiner* | £59 (for the set) | This comes in the Pre:Empt travel kit and is a clarifying toner. I always find these kinds of products hard to judge but so far, I do like this. I'm not sure it's always going to be a necessary step in your routine but I do find it removes any excess oils on my skin and my pores seem a little tighter after use. My skin feels soft, smooth and not at all stripped after use.
Ingredients include: sugar maple, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate and caffeine

Jurlique Rosewater Mist* | £18 | I actually already have this one but it's great to have one here, as I actually left it in Manchester when I moved, in favour of something more travel-friendly! It does come in a glass bottle, which isn't the most practical but does look pretty on the dressing table. I love the rose petal scent of this product and it immediately soothes and moisturises my skin when I use it in the morning after cleansing.
Ingredients include: rose flower extract, lactic acid and grapefruit seed extract

Jurlique Activating Water Essence* | £40 | An essence is more or less like a toner in that you use it after cleansing but before your serum or moisturiser. This is on the pricier end of the scale but the amount of product you get is also pretty impressive. As the name suggests, this is a water-like product that doesn't feel at all sticky on the skin. I just apply it with a cotton wool pad and it instantly soothes, softens and moisturises my skin. If your skin even feels tight or in need of hydration after cleansing then it's well worth including this product in your routine.
Ingredients include: peach leaf extract, witch hazel extract and peppermint leaf extract

Pixi Vitamin Wakeup Mist* | £16 | This fruity-citric fragranced product smells amazing and feels invigorating on this skin. It's very cooling and refreshing and does feel nice and hydrating on my skin. I do find my skin looks healthy and feels soft when I use this in the morning after cleansing.
Ingredients include: orange flower extract, niacinamide and castor oil

Dermatx Clarify Microdermabrasion System* | £70 | I was super-excited to try this product! £70 might sound steep but in comparison to getting this done professionally, you really are saving a bomb. This device comes with a flat foam application head and a cleansing brush head. The cleansing brush, I could live without, as I prefer using a silicone one, however at the end of the day if you don't own a cleansing brush then it's great to get this option included in the set (as the price of one can easily run into £100+). The foam head is for use with the microdermabrasion cream and, whilst I can't imagine it would last that long, you can purchase a replacement pack of 2 for £8, which is pretty reasonable. The cream itself can be purchased on its own but it's £39 and given that I find using the applicator more effective than  applying the cream manually (plus the bonus cleansing brush head), I think it's worth getting the entire system unless it's a repurchase. One thing I did note is that there's only one setting on the device - it's either 'off' or 'on'.
The cream itself is fully of teeny tiny exfoliating crystals and a little goes a long way. I have the Clarifying version, designed for large pores and blemish-prone skin, which contains retinols (which are amazing for acne-prone skin), tea tree oil and 2% salicylic acid (a BHA that deeply exfoliates and clears the pores). So far, I'm incredibly impressed with the results from using this once a week and I'm excited to see how this works for me in the long-term. I personally don't find this too harsh on my skin at all but the website does advise against using this on very sensitive skin. Immediately after applying the cream, I massage it in with the device (using the foam applicator) for two minutes, then rinse and dry it, which leaves my skin feeling incredibly smooth. The first time I tried the device, I remember thinking my skin had never been so soft and even! I've noticed that the tiny little bumps on my skin are less pronounced and the look of pores has been improved. I also feel that any hyper-pigmentation left over from spots has cleared up really nicely since I started using this. My makeup looks better, the texture of my skin has been improved and I think I love this product!

Serums & Moisturisers

Clarins Bi-Phase Serum* | £44 | I am a huge fan of this serum and have been using it almost every single day recently. You do need to give it a good shake but it has a very lightweight, non-sticky texture. One thing I don't like is the pump dispenser because the product is very watery, so this just causes it to 'spurt' out. However, it's nice and fast-absorbing, making it perfect for combination dehydrated skin like mine. It's very hydrating and leaves my skin smoother and plumper.
Ingredients include: organic leaf of life extract

Perricone MD Skin Perfecting Serum* | £59 (for the set) | So far I'm really enjoying using this serum. Whilst I can't really comment on its purported anti-aging benefits, I do feel my skin looks fresh, healthy and smooth, as well as feeling softer when I use this serum. It has a slightly milky colour and absorbs well. It leaves a very slight tackiness but it's really nothing major. It's also supposed to help the appearance of pores, though I can't say I've noticed a massive difference just from using this.
Ingredients include: thioctic acid and magnesium ascorbic phosphate

Perricone MD Oil-Free Hydrating Cream* | £59 (for the set) | I was pretty impressed with this moisturiser. It plumps up the skin and hydrates it without being overly rich or too heavy. It takes care of an dehydration lines and gives my skin just the right amount of nourishment without making it feel overloaded with product or breaking me out. Overall I recommend this one for normal and combination skin types that are in need of a good amount of hydration.
Ingredients include: shea butter, cetearyl olivate and caprylic/capric triglyceride

Clarins Hydra-Essentiel Silky Cream* | £36 | This moisturiser isn't one I see myself using as we head into the warmer months, but I have been enjoying it recently and do see myself reaching for this again next winter. It's a cream texture that I'd say is reasonably rich, but not at all greasy. I don't find it leaves an excess on my skin, but I also apply this quite sparingly. It's very nourishing and hydrating, making my skin nice and soft and leaves it looking nice and healthy. Any fine lines look a lot less visible and when I go to apply my makeup, my base doesn't settle into them. I think this will be too much for oily skin but if you're normal, combination or a little dry then it's worth trying.
Ingredients include: organic leaf of life extract

Jurlique Rose Moisture Plus Moisturising Lotion* | £32 | What I really like about this product is its lightweight, milky texture. It's nice to try a very moisturising product that feels a little bit fresher on the skin and doesn't take long to work in. This is great if you suffer from annoying dry patches but don't want to cake on a rich cream. It doesn't leave my face looking shiny and, despite it smelling of roses, I also didn't find that it aggravated any sensitivity in my skin.
Ingredients include: avocado oil, rosehip oil, grape seed extract and honey

Perricone MD Brightening Eye Cream* | £59 (for the set) | I've mentioned before that I do have hyper-pigmentation under the eyes so no cream ever seems to shift my dark circles! This product has a creamy texture but once it's massaged around the eye area, it sort of melts into the skin. It isn't anything too rich or heavy but it really hydrates the eye area and helps things look less puffy and tired. My only real negative here is that it's quite hard to control how much product comes out, meaning I regularly end up squeezing out way too much!
Ingredients include: caffeine, shea butter and citric acid

Proelle Organic Anti-Aging Night Cream for Oily/Acne-Prone Skin* | £12 | I fared a lot better with this product that I did with the cleanser from this brand. I would recommend shaking this before use because (due to the natural ingredients) it can become separated out, with the oils rising to the surface. A little definitely goes a long way and if you over-apply this, you might end up with a bit of excess shine. However used sparingly, this leaves my skin soft, smooth and hydrated. It's quite calming on my skin and I noticed my skin looked very clear during the time I tested out this product. Again, this is something that's billed as anti-aging but I wouldn't really know if it's effective in that sense!
Ingredients include: tea tree, lemongrass and aloe vera

Vichy Idealia Skin Sleep* | £26.50 | This is one of those really great 'does-it-all' products. I find it calming and soothing on my skin and it helps keep any breakouts at bay. I also find it moisturising without being overly rich, and it absorbs nicely into the skin, plumping out any dehydration lines. It makes my skin so much smoother and less tired when I wake up in the morning, so I actually look really well-rested.
Ingredients include: niacinamide, caffeine and apricot kernel oil

  3. I loved this post Jasmine - the Vichy peeling sounds so good. I'm super into glycolic acid peels and just peels in general; they make me skin look and feel amazing. I was really intrigued by the microdermabrasion device; I do have dark spots and uneven skin at times and, by the sounds of things, I could do with some microdermabrasion in my life. Thanks so much for sharing Jasmine! x
