The Makeup Rotation | How to Make the Most of Your Collection

I feel like I have a nice little (ha!) collection of products going, however I still have to make an effort to ensure I'm getting the use out of all my products. Today I'm going to share my system and a few top tips for creating your own makeup rotation.

Storage

First things first! Before you create your rotation, you need to think about how you're going to separate your everyday products from everything else. Having a nice, ordered storage system will help you to see what you have to choose from, as well as ensuring your everyday makeup is separated so you can quickly and easily grab for it in the morning.

I personally like to use the Muji 2 Drawer Wide Acrylic Box for mine, because it stores the perfect amount of makeup for a week and I can easily see what's in there. If all of the products I want to put in there for my weekly rotation don't fit, then I know I'm trying to cram in too much!

Getting the Mix Right

The general outline I follow for my weekly makeup is:

- 2 Primers (one for my face and one for my eyes)
- 1 Light Base
- 1 Medium or Full Coverage Base
- 1 Corrector
- 1 Concealer (or two...)
- 1 Setting Powder
- 1 Highlighter
- 1-2 Blushers
- 1 Bronzer or Contour Product
- 1 Single Eyeshadow (usually cream)
- 1 Eyeshadow Palette
- 3 Eyeliners (one liquid, one black pencil and one coloured pencil)
- 1 Mascara
- 3 Lip Products (with one being a hydrating formula, one matte and one in the middle)

I try to keep a blend of new products I'm testing, everyday essentials and old forgotten favourites. If I'm having a clear-out then I'll also throw in some 'last chance saloon' products that I'm considering giving away or binning but want to give one last throw of the dice to make my decision. You can also mix things up by having one cream product and one powder product for your blushers (I try to tie in the colours themselves with the lip shades I've selected).

Why it's a Good Idea

I find this system makes it clear what I have and swapping things around weekly means I go to the effort of scouting through my entire collection on a Sunday evening to find something 'new' to try. When you have a makeup collection as opposed to just a makeup bag, it can be time-consuming to rifle through everything on a daily basis. This system also makes me switch things up and try something new instead of only ever gravitating towards my tried and tested favourites.

How do you make sure you use all the beauty products you own?

  1. Really interesting post, Jasmine! I am terrible at rotating - once I find a product I love, I neglect the others. My Benefit cheek palette? Abandoned. *scolds self* x

    1. I think my Benefit cheek palette needs to go into my 'to give away' pile - if you rotate things around and still don't end up using something, alarm bells should be ringing! Xx

  2. Makeup can get a bit overwhelming once the collection grows more and more. I think rotating items is important! I really need to go through mine and throw out the things I don't like or need. xo

  3. I've been shopping my stash a lot lately and try to rotate products on weekly basis as well. I keep my 'go to' everyday makeup in some storage on top of my vanity but I still find myself rummaging through my drawers on some mornings :) x

  7. This is such a great post idea, Jasmine! I hardly ever make the most out of my collection and always stick to the same kind of products every day. But this has made me want to expand out and rediscover old favourites x

  10. I do this exact same thing!! I try to make my weekly rotation include my current favorites and some old products that I have not used in forever. I find that if I put it in my weekly rotation and still don't use it - it's time to get rid of it!

  12. I'm the worst for forgetting products, despite the fact that I tend to reach for different items when I wear makeup (yep I'm that person that has four foundations open at a time...but I find that I like to play and experiment with my makeup...plus I keep it all in acrylic storage so I can see what I want straight away.

  13. I should do that more often. I usually stick to the latest purchases and I forget about my beloved products. Creating a product list for a month is a good idea and I'll definitely give it a try. At least I can show some love to my stash then :) x

  14. This is such an excellent idea! I feel like my make-up collection is growing and growing but I still find myself using the same products I have stuffed in my make-up bag. This post gave me the inspiration to finally mix it up a little bit.

  15. I like this post - the way I have found it easy to do is to put it all in different tubs in my drawers so I use different products each day!

  21. Ah! I love your system. Thankfully I have all my makeup in one large drawer and all the containers are open making it easier for me to have access to all of it which is why I like to mix it up almost daily. xxx

  22. Great advice, my biggest problem is not wearing enough makeup to make the most of what I actually have. I always wear the bare minimum so I can get some extra sleep but now that summer is coming it should be much easier to get out of bed! Great post, thank you for sharing x

  23. This is a really great idea! At the moment I have everything stored and try to use each one once, then put it at the back of the line, but nothing ever really gets used. The drawer a week solution sounds much more practical!

  26. I need to get better when it comes to my storage, because I've got some that are in acrylic stations and then others that are just shoved in drawers and I forget to use half the lipsticks in the drawers! I am definitely going to have to swap out some of my makeup for Spring to make sure I am using the most of it! xx

  30. I love the idea of having the right mix of products. For me it's easy when it comes to foundation as I only have one for everything at the minute but when you mention concealers I always like to switch mine up depending on how good my skin is and just generally what I'm feeling

  31. I always try and do this with my own collection. I purchased a make-up bag that had multiple compartments that I can use for eyes/face/base etc. and then each Sunday I try and go through my main drawers and utilise the products that have been pushed to the back. I find it quite therapeutic and I also find it can prevent me from spending money and is makes me realise how many products I have and how I do not need anymore. I loved this post!

    P.S, I love your photos!

  32. I need to do this. I find whenever I am in a rush and don't have much time to do my makeup I pick up the products closest to me so I should probably rotate my makes in a way that gets a few selections from each category and place them all in the one spot, close by. Wonderful post.

  33. i don't do weekly rotation because i have limited products and makeup is pretty expensive in where i live. for instance, maybelline products is considered drugstore in the States but in where i live, the price can be doubled. in US, you can get a mascara with just $2-5, but you can't have that. drugstore mascaras usually cost $7-ish and above in where i live. your weekly rotation outline is more or less my entire makeup collection, excluding bronzers, highlight and eyebrow product because i don't use them xD

so anyway, my point is...i think this is a good weekly rotation list. definitely a good way to stick to certain brands or products and use them up. i can only imagine how difficult it is to pick and use 1 mascara for a week or a month when you have like 50 of them.

    p.s: love your storage!

  35. I tend to keep my most used makeup in my Muji drawers on my desk, and my daily makeup in a separate box, but it's time to tidy up. And buy a few more.

Even with the clear storage, I forget what I have, which isn't ideal and is so wasteful. I need to make more of an effort to switch things up.
