The Autumn Lip Edit

I’m really not one for accepting the dark and the cold any sooner than I need to but I guess it’s time to admit it’s officially Autumn! Makeup doesn’t have any rules and you can wear these shades no matter what the season, however this post is all about my top lip picks that are perfect for this season.

MAC Lustre Lipstick in Plumful | £15.50 | If a little part of you wants to rock a berry lip but you’re not quite sure it’ll suit you, or if you want something you can wear on an everyday basis without it feeling too bold; Plumful is for you! It’s a gorgeous red-toned plum shade with a sheer finish and a bit of a sheen. Obviously it’s not the longest-wearing formula but I can forgive that in return for a daytime-appropriate berry lip.

MAC Satin Lipstick in Twig | £15.50 | An oldie but a goodie! This was in a similar post of mine last year but I just couldn’t not mention it again. This is a Satin finish, meaning it has more of a sheen than a matte lipstick and is a little creamier but still has amazing pigmentation and almost as much longevity. This is a gorgeous dusky pink/mauve colour.

Urban Decay Vice Comfort Matte Lipstick in Hitch Hike | £15 | I find this shade so difficult to describe as it’s hard to liken to any other shades I have in my collection. It’s a sort of muted rosy deep red shade that still only seems a touch more intense than a rose-nude. I love the Comfort Matte formula; it glides onto the lips and has incredible staying-power despite not being drying and having a completely opaque finish.

MAC Matte Lipstick in Strip Me Down | £15.50 | This is a limited edition shade in collaboration with actress Taraji P. Henson, so get it whilst you can! It’s almost like my perfect mix of two other MAC matte nudes: Velvet Teddy (a slightly cool-toned, medium brown) and Taupe (a medium-deep, very warm caramel brown). It comes out as a perfect ‘my lips but better’ shade on me that requires zero work. It’s a beige-nude so doesn’t lean overly towards warm or cool undertones. I find MAC’s matte formula a bit hit-and-miss but like most of the nude shades, this is nice and creamy.

ColourPop Matte Lippie Stix in Brink | $5 | Although this is billed as ‘Matte’, I find the formula to be very much like what MAC labels ‘Satin’. It’s very creamy but has amazing colour payoff and does have a very slight sheen once applied. It’s another one of those perfect nudes for my skin tone, though it’s much warmer than Strip Me Down. I’d describe this as a mid-toned warm brown nude with slightly mauve undertones.

Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Walkyrie | £20 | Another new addition to my collection is this one from Nars. I’m a huge fan of the smooth formula of their matte lip pencils however most of the shades are bold reds, which aren’t really my thing. However recently I came across this gorgeous rich brown-red shade and have really fallen for it. It has that unusual, almost-stain-like finish of the other shade I own from this range that never feels drying.

MAC Lip Pencil in Spice | £13 | I very rarely bother lining my lips so the few (well, proportionately few in comparison to my lipstick collection!) I do have are shades that will work with a lot of the lip colours I wear. Spice is a warm mid-toned brown that pairs beautifully with almost all the lipsticks I’ve mentioned so far. It’s also perfect for ‘Autumn-ing’ other lipsticks you might own – pair it with your favourite peachy-pink from Spring for a perfect Autumn nude. It’s the perfect consistency; waxy enough to stop any bleeding but creamy enough to apply smoothly even if you want to wear it on its own.

Jouer Long-Wear Crème Liquid Lipstick in Noisette | £15 | I have to admit I’m still not fully sold on the formula of these; they go on very nicely but have a slightly powdery finish one they dry down which leaves me wanting to lick my lips! However they are very long-wearing and have a fluid consistency despite being very opaque. Noisette can be described simply as a brown with neutral undertones. I know slightly cool-toned brown lips are huge on Instagram, however I’ve never found them to be particularly flattering. Noisette is like a ‘wearable’ version of that trend; it’s not too dark and it isn’t too cool but gives that slightly 90s vibe.

Gerard Cosmetics Hydra Matte Liquid Lipstick in Everything Nice | £10.50 | Not gonna lie; I wore this throughout Summer as an evening option because I feel like it’s really versatile in that sense, but it’s also a perfect everyday shade as we move into Autumn. It’s a gorgeous warm brown nude that’s just perfect for me and I love the formula; it’s one of my favourites. It is quite fluid but has amazing colour payoff and doesn’t cling to dry patches or feel at all uncomfortable on my lips.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita II | £16 | This is another adaptable shade that I wore a lot for Summer nights too. It’s a very warm nude that’s lighter than Everything Nice and has a strong terracotta undertone. It isn’t my all-time favourite liquid lipstick formula because it can be a tiny bit drying and does need re-touching after 5-ish hours of wear, however the shade range is just unparalleled!

Coloured Raine Matte Liquid Paint in Bachelorette | £15 | A recent addition to my stash that I’ve been after for ages is Bachelorette by Coloured Raine. I wasn’t really sure what to expect because from online swatches it looked to be one of those shades that could appear dramatically different depending on the skin tone of the person wearing it. For me it’s a very deep mauve with plum undertones that’s perfect for evening wear. It’s super-pigmented and so long-lasting and actually isn’t too drying for me so I definitely recommend the formula as well as this shade.

Beauty Bakerie Lip Whip in Ginger Snap | £16 | It was such a drama to get hold of this! Long story short: my parcel was delivered to the wrong place and Cocktail Cosmetics (who I ordered it from) were really difficult about the whole thing - Cult Beauty now stock it so I've linked to them instead. Luckily it was well worth the wait. I think this might also be a dupe for the Kylie Lip Kit in Ginger; it's a beautiful muted red-brown-orange shade. The formula isn't too drying and it also isn't the longest-lasting liquid lipstick in my stash (at the same time the fade isn't uneven so I can't complain too much) but this kind of rusty red-nude is perfect for Autumn.

  1. Even though I love autumn, I really don't like short days and freezing nights! I've been wearing twig a lot lately, it is a beautiful transition colour and it doesn't feel drying at all. Hitch Hike and Walkyrie are absolutely beautiful, I should check them out. I want to try KVD liquid lipsticks, however, my lips tend to get really dry in colder months, so I am not sure if the drying formula would make things even worse. x

  2. I have searched for swatches of Mac Strip me down online (since I don't have a Mac store where I live) and someone wrote that it was a dupe to Mac taupe (wich I own)... Would you say that they are similar? Or do I need to get this lipstick aswell? :)

    1. I guess it depends - if you're a beauty lover then you can definitely justify both (I wouldn't say it's a dupe as Taupe is darker and warmer in tone) but as a normal human being one of the two would be enough haha xx

  3. I love the majority of shades in this post! I think my go-to will be Colourpop's Lippie Stix in Cookie, this Autumn - slightly warm, browny nude on my lips and it looks amazing! x

  4. Great picks! I have completely forgotten about Mac Twig, I need to wear it again! I couldn't agree more about Jouer Noisette, it's a plain brown which remains extremely flattering, I don't know how they did it! The Ginger Snap Beauty Bakerie lip whip is absolutely gorgeous, the formula also sounds more adapted to colder months as a non drying formula is always a lot more comfortable to wear!

I already I have mac twig and also Spice, both of which I love to wear all year around - they are such perfect everyday shades! One shade I love to bring out every autumn is Mac 'Hot Tahiti' - it's a little more of a berry colour but still very wearable!

  14. Mac Twig is literally my go-to favourite lip in the Autumn time. It just adds something a bit extra to a normal brown nude! I really want to pick up Mac Spice because like you said it's one of those pencils that just works as an overall lip colour too! Mac plumful is one of my faves too, need to remind myself to wear it more this year! I've been wanting to try out some Kate Von D liquid lipsticks for ages but have heard that they can be drying which isn't my favourite! xx

  27. Twig is eternally beautiful and you're right...the ColourPop matte is definitely more akin to MAC Satin formula and I actually like it that way. Hooray, you got Noisette...yeh the formula is a bit underwhelming considering the hype but that shade is gorgeous. Gingersnap is calling to me...mmmm! xxx

  33. I really, really want to get myself one or two new autumn shades. This selection gives me a great choice :D Walkyrie by Nars is such a gorgeous shade, I don't have anything similar so that's the one that I like the most! As for me, my go-to autumn lipstick is Dark Side by MAC. I carry on wearing it in the winter as well, it is the most gorgeous deep burgundy shade!
