3 Ways to Make That Time of the Month a Bit Easier

I kind of think we need to get over the 'squickiness' surrounding periods. 50% of the population have to deal with it so why should it be taboo to talk about them? Long gone are the days when women retired to their chambers for a week every month; whether it's work, holidays, sports, events or anything else, most of us have to find a way to carry on even when that dreaded time of the month gets in the way. Everyone experiences things differently; some (lucky) people can just shrug and grab a tampon, others have crippling cramps, nausea, sluggishness and extreme bloating. Whichever camp you fall into, I'm sure most of us find it at the very least 'pretty inconvenient'. These are my top ways to make yourself feel a little better when the show must go on...

Get Up and Dressed

If you're like me then even just slobbing around in your PJs on a Sunday can get seriously boring. Sometimes not getting out of bed makes you feel even more sluggish and unwell so if you even just get up to walk to the corner shop, it's good to get up and out of the house. It's amazing how even just a bit of makeup and fresh air can make you feel like you can handle the day despite feeling rubbish when you woke up. It also gives you something to focus on instead of curling up in  foetal position with nothing else to think about other than how awful you feel!

Treat Yourself

I was kindly sent a Pink Parcel* (£6.99 for your first one then £10.50/month including postage), which is a monthly subscription box (designed to fit through your letter box) that you can have sent out when you're due on. If you're like me, it doesn't matter how many boxes of tampons you think you bought; on Day 1 you *will* be rooting around in the bottom of your bag trying to find a spare! You get a little drawstring pouch with pads and/or tampons (whichever you prefer) which you can throw in your bag for on the go (no more rummaging - yay!) There's a small box full of overnight supplies and a larger box of backups to keep you going for the rest of the week so you're always prepared. There's also a box full of goodies to cheer you up!

This month it was a Sunkissed Shimmer Dust Brush* which is lovely for adding some golden glow to the shoulders and décolletage. There are some Jealous Sweets* and mine were (vegan-friendly) fruity gummy bears (less chewy but they have so much more fruity flavour than your usual gummy bears). I also have a sachet of the Teapigs Matcha Tea*, because realistically when you're feeling rubbish, tea is the first thing you'll want to reach for (this bright green tea is so good, I think it's my new obsession!) There's another healthy snack in the form of the Emily Crunchy Apple Fruity Crisps*, which are just yummy dried fruit flakes. You also get an Estella Bartlett Friendship Bracelet* (mine is a bright pink string bracelet with silver beads). Inside the box there's also the Sass Intimate Perfect Skin Concentrate*, because ingrown hairs are never nice. Especially not there...! You just put a little of this on after whatever hair removal you've undergone and it will both soothe and exfoliate the skin to prevent ingrown hair horror! I also got a Cougar Liquid Lipstick in Mulberry* which is a nice, opaque liquid lipstick in a non-drying (but still long-lasting) formula. The mauve colour is very on-trend and reminds me a lot of ColourPop's Lumiere 2. It does take a couple of swipes to get the colour fully opaque but I still think this is a really nice formula! Finally there's a So Susan Highlighting Pencil* which is a matte pinky-cream shade. I'm not sure if it's intended for all over the face but for me it's a great one for highlighting the brow bone.

I absolutely love this idea because not only are you prepared even if you forgot you were due, but you get a load of cute surprises to cheer you up a bit. Makeup and sweet things pretty much make my world go round so for me there's no better pick-me-up when I feel gross! Having some new beauty bits to play with is also a great motivator to get up and dressed.

Don't Push Yourself Too Hard

I've definitely learnt the hard way that sometimes you just aren't up to work or whatever else you have going on! People can be a little bit dismissive of just how unwell you can feel during those first couple of days so it can feel like you're being silly but if you don't feel well enough then why does it matter what the cause is? If you're always getting really bad cramps and feeling unwell in yourself then there's also no shame in going to see your doctor. I think people get it into their head that they shouldn't 'bother' their doctor until they're on death's door but there's no harm in being safe and just making sure that everything's ok and finding out ways to manage it.

How do you make that time of the month a little bit more bearable?

  2. I loathe it when period comes but it's also the only time in the month I can wear nail polishes, so, I guess; yay? lol I love trying out all sorts of hot drink during period too, though hot chocolate is my go-to (since it does wonder on my cramp), peach tea and chai has been my favorite lately.

  3. These are such great ideas! I particularly agree with the Get Up and Dressed part, it can be quite hard to motivate myself, but I never regret doing it, it just helps so much!

  5. Ah, my period is the bane of my life - the nausea/faintness is so bad that I have to stay in bed! I always find that, as you mentioned, a quick walk to the corner shop helps though. Great post xx

  12. I have PCOS so I get some very intense moodswings when I'm on my period - I've learned to not feel guilty if I need to spend some time alone being grumpy and throwing chocolate at my face. The subscription box sounds like a lovely idea! x

  14. Luckily my time of the month isn't too bad, every once in a while I'll get bad cramps but usually I feel fine, just inconvenienced. A subscription box would be great for people who have a really bad period!

  17. What an amazing idea! I believe we have something similar here in Aus! I will have to look it up! I'm luck enough to have not had my period for over a year now! Breastfeeding seems to be keeping it away for me. I must admit, I am thoroughly enjoying it!! Not looking forward to the return!! haha <3
