Today we're talking drugstore mascara. I've alway been a firm believer in the idea that you don't need to spend much on mascara and I feel pretty confident in that conclusion, having tried mascaras as pricey as £50 through to those as cheap as £6! Today we're running through my favourite mascaras at the drugstore...

First up, we have my all-time favourite (I've been purchasing it for a decade now!): the Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara | £9.99. The reason this has been such a long-time favourite of mine is because it's kind of good at everything. It has a rubberised wand, like all of the products in this post (that's just my personal preference and seems to be how most mascaras are made now) with a large but curved comb brush which really lifts and separates the lashes. But not only that; it also adds this sort of separated volume to my lashes which is what makes it special. Most volumising mascaras I've tried can be a little cakey and make my lashes stick together, but this one keeps my lashes individual and the brush coats them perfectly so they stay separate but still look thicker and much darker (this is a black mascara). It's not marketed as water-resistant or anything like that, but I have quite sensitive eyes and find that this doesn't smudge, transfer or flake even on a pretty hot day for me. And that's pretty much everything I need from a mascara, whether its for daytime wear or to apply before a night out!

Next, we have the Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara in Burgundy Haze | £12.99. Ok, so this isn't my favourite formula; it has a rubberised wand with a straight, blunt shape and I find it less ergonomic to use than the original Lash Sensational and more prone to clumping if you're not careful. However, it deserves to be on this list thanks to its gorgeous colour; I've tried burgundy mascaras in the past but most of them have been high-end, so it's great to see something at this price-point that gives my lashes the same look. Don't worry; this is a subtle burgundy so it's not going to make your eyes look weird or red or anything like that, it will just add a plummy warmth to your eye look and pairs beautifully with gold or berry-toned eyeshadows. Although I don't love it as much as the original Lash Sensational mascara in terms of formula; it's still pretty good and I don't find it transfers or has any fallout throughout the day (though - given the colour - I've only used this during winter). I find my lashes aren't as fluttery and separated but it still adds volume and length. If you're looking for a burgundy mascara that's not going to set you back £40+, then give this a go.

Another alternatively-coloured formula I enjoy is the Sculpted by Aimee My Mascara in Brown* | £18. This is definitely on the pricier side for Affordable Beauty Month, but a lot of formulas from traditional drugstore brands are now on the wrong side of £15, so I might as well include the one I genuinely enjoy! This has a wand that's quite similar to the Maybelline Lash Sensational one (though it's smaller) with its rubberised material and curved shape with comb-like bristles. I find this wand really grips onto your lashes at the root and distributes the product evenly for a no-clump finish. This is definitely more of a length and separation kind of mascara, but I'm not mad at that! Sometimes, when I just want a really natural makeup look, that's exactly what I'm looking for. The brown colour is again quite subtle but it just makes everything look a little softer and I particularly recommend it if you have fair (or grey) hair and find that jet black mascara looks a little harsh sometimes. It's a great low-effort, quick-apply, natural-looking option to subtly define the eyes. I've had no issues with it smudging or flaking off into my eyes and I've tested it out in hot weather and have also worn it on some very long days!

Finally, we have the e.l.f. Lash N Roll Mascara | £6 | which is, of course, a little reminiscent of a certain, very popular high-end formula! I find it to be very similar to the product it's inspired by for a fraction of the price. You have a thin, rubberised curved wand to capture the lashes and really give that definition. I also really get a great curl with this mascara that lasts pretty well throughout the day and really opens up my eyes. It also gives my lashes amazing length, though it's not that volumising. Again, that doesn't bother me since I do prefer length and separation, but if you're looking for a really 'fat' mascara then this probably isn't the one for you! It doesn't smudge, it doesn't flake and it's just a really nice everyday black mascara that looks natural once applied. Plus, for £6 you really can't go wrong!

Have you tried any of these mascaras? What are your favourites from the drugstore?
